But how do we adjust our expectations and the electorate’s expectations once he gets into office.

The Senate will gut or water down any M4A or GND bill Sanders proposes. Even if the Dems control the senate the blue dogs are likely to side with republicans or force compromise. On that matter it’s important to note that sanders has a voting record of cutting deals with centrists in Congress to ensure the incremental milquetoast changes the Obama administration passed stuck.

Bernie and the Dems will have two years to figure out how to pass their policies and it’s likely they’ll be a blip that can easily be repealed or rolled back by the next Republican Congress/Senate. I expect a Republican blowout in the next midterm when Bernie supporters realize their wishes aren’t going to come true (thus depressing turnout) while the Republican outrage machine turns out and flips the house again.

Then we spend the next 2-6 years watching Bernie lash out at congress and the senate in yet another deadlock similar to deadlocks trump experienced for a lot of his signature policies. Only Bernie is never going to bully and cajole his party into falling in line.

This is a bit outside the purview of this, the 2020 Democratic Primary thread. Maybe when we're at the 2020 Democratic Nominee thread.

Imagine her with all the powers the department would place at her disposal.

Here's the thing.

We actually do know this, believe it or not. No successful legislation is ever passed that results in one side getting everything they want.

But here's the thing--of the entire field, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren can be relied upon to begin negotiations at the ideal point. Remember how Obama used to pre-compromise then be shocked that Republicans (in bad faith) would attack his proposal as creeping socialism? We are more likely to get a decent bill from a Warren or Sanders administration because they will start with the ideal bill rather than just pre-compromising and hoping everyone hops on board.

They'd much rather have four more years of "What outrageous thing did President Trump tweet today? Tune in at 6 to find out!"

The media fluffed Bernie as an antiClinton strategy when they thought he could never win, it was only when he started shooting up in the polls that they started attacking him.

If Warren got anywhere near the crown, they would absolutely use these same disingenuous "she's a racist who hates black people/she's a n*lover who wants RAPISTS and MURDERERS voting for your children's future" poo poo they're using against him.

Late to discussion on this, but The Harvard Undergraduate Centrist Society is comedy gold, the lowest-hanging fruit possible. It sounds like a bit from the Onion or something. If I'd never heard of them and I was trying to invent a fictional awful college politics club, well, honestly I'd probably base my first try on the stories I heard about Ted Cruz at Princeton, but if that was taken and I had to think of something else, I'd spit out "The Harvard Undergraduate Centrist Society" without a second thought. It's living satire.

That cop-worshipping fascist kid deserves to be dunked on as much or more, certainly, but I really doubt there's anything in his online history as self-evidently funny as the Harvard Undergraduate Centrist Society, so that kind of gets in the way

Matt makes the case Bernie would govern much more pragmatically than people give him credit for. And that the Democratic establishment should stop freaking out.

https://twitter.com/mattyglesias/status/1121036882886918144

This is a strong example of his pragmatism

quote:

The policy area on which he’s had the most practical influence is veterans issues, as he chaired the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee for a two-year span, during which Congress enacted substantive reform to the veterans health system.

Given the objective constellation of political forces at the time, this required bipartisan support, so Sanders (working mainly with Republican John McCain) produced a bipartisan bill that in exchange for a substantial boost in funding made some concessions to conservatives in creating “private options” for veterans to seek care outside of the publicly run Veterans Affairs system.

It’s fine if you want to be annoyed that Sanders’s self-presentation as a revolutionary who will sweep all practical obstacles aside is at odds with his reality as an experienced legislator who does normal senator stuff in a normal way. But there’s no reason to actually be worried that Sanders is a deluded radical who doesn’t understand how the government works. Just look at how he’s actually governed.

He also tries to argue that actually Liz has been more willing to stir up trouble than Bernie. I'm not sure I agree with that. I do remember Bernie doing an epic long fillibuster talk against one of Obama's proposals. But it did make me remember that Warren has shown she's willing to buck the establishment.

1. Her successfully thwarting Obama's choice for Undersecretary at Treasury. https://www.vox.com/2014/12/11/7376421/antonio-weiss
2. Fighting against the omnibus spending bill in 2014 to keep the government open, because it removed a financial regulation from Dodd-Frank https://www.vox.com/2014/12/11/7373831/swaps-pushout
