turns out another thing that happens when your trade and immigration policies gently caress over farmers is that they stop buying tractors

quote:

Purchases of farm equipment plunged by an annualized $900 million in the first quarter of the year, the sharpest drop in three years, as U.S. producers struggle with falling commodity prices and the fallout of President Donald Trump’s trade wars.

quote:

The economic squeeze on U.S. producers is tightening after six years of decline in U.S. farm profits, which fell last year to $69.4 billion, half of the $136.1 billion in 2013. Prices of key commodities such as corn and soybeans have declined while the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown has cut into migrant labor. Midwestern states were hit with historic floods this spring.

i had to cover the farm economy when it was sky high corn and soybean prices so land prices went through the roof. a lot of people sold high.obviously, a lot of people bought high, too. This was in 2012 or so. The 180 degree change has been interesting to watch now from outside of corn country

I know like 2 democratic farmers and one of em is a full time veterinarian and part time farmer lol. You dumbasses voted for this lmao

It's amazing to me how many specific constituencies are very conservative yet the Republicans consistently gently caress them over economically, and at the same time the Republicans are constantly hoorahing that constituency (farmers, coal miners, soldiers, there are others).

It kinda makes sense, in a weird way. Those constituencies are very traditional and have been around for a long, long time, and the republican party is all about tradition and returning to former “glory”. Republican politicians want to retain that support, so they target those demographics, but they also recognize that ACTUALLY supporting those constituencies often isn’t really economically viable in this day and age. So they just…don’t. They gently caress them over but spend all their time talking up how important those sections are and how much they care about them. So when you need to choose between “someone that says they’ll gently caress you over, and then fucks you over” and “someone who tells you you’re great, and then fucks you over” you’ll go with the latter because then at least you can get some positive reinforcement and live in some kind of denial dream world. (And also blame all the bad things on the opposing party)

they threw a loving fit over Obama's "waters of the us" epa policy saying farmers are responsible for keeping their goddamn chemicals in their loving fields as a way to combat the massive dead zone in the gulf among other problems. also cities like des Moines sued because they had to spend a shitload of money to reduce the nitrogen in the water to a safe level because the raccoon river where they get drinking water from is functionally a drainage ditch for farmers in nw iowa. farmers will scream if you do anything to regulate stuff, and Republicans are always in favor of salting the earth and chucking batteries into the ocean. they're going to vote themselves out of a profession because dems at least pay some lipservice to environmental issues

right to repair is an issue for sure, and Bernie should be for it, but I couldn't imagine it would swing a lot of people.

None, because those farmers will happily gently caress over their self interests if it means they get to give the finger at the blues.

Kinda like when Trump banned bump-stocks, which is the first major federal law against guns since 1994. Conservatives frothed at the mouth because of Trump's decision, but you bet he'll get their votes next year.

I realize now that Trump could literally flip his party and his voter-base would follow him as long as he doesn't outright say he's a Democrat.

But Democrats don't say they're going to gently caress them over, they say they're going to help them, and they will (with the exception of H. Clinton, which is it's own thing).

Like if you talk to people in the Army about who actually gives them pay raises, it's Democrats. But they insist Republican care more about the troops.

The chair of the county board of supervisors (if you're not familiar with that political body, think city council for the areas outside of incorporated cities) in one of the counties I covered was elected as a democrat and is a fairly intelligent guy. he was pretty open in saying it sucks now and will suck later because of an idiotic unforced error. Everything grown in Iowa (poultry, pork, corn, and soybeans) had a giant market in China because a growing class of monied shoppers want to eat meat like Americans do - all of the time and for cheap. They couldn't meet internal demand so they bought a shitload of Iowa meats and grain to feed their own livestock.
