Nintendo quietly added a new boost mode in Firmware 8.0 that lets games temporarily overclock the CPU from 1ghz to 1.75ghz, and the new VR patch uses it to boost through loading screens:

it took me a bit to find the best and most comfortable way for me to play Zelder in VR but having done that, I think it owns and really gives the game a fresh feel

the sense of scale really changes. running around and gliding and weather become much more cozy. for me...

a) as a four eyed dork who wears contacts or glasses, contacts definitely make it easier to find the least-bad sweet spot for locating the headset. before I was generally just messing around with labo vr when it was the evening and I'd taken out the contacts for the day. obvious but

b) throwing a coat or whatever over yerself like an old time photographer, to block out ambient light, helps

c) headphones with volume cranked up

there's really barely any room for ventilation of the switch though, besides a small gap. it doesn't seem to get warm, even compared to normal handheld mode which will run the fan to dissipate noticeable heat, so maybe they cranked the resolution down too for more reasons than hardware limitations? it chugs in fun new ways. cutting a slit in the cardboard that opens the intake to fresh air makes a bit of sense but not if the switch isn't going to bother making use of it.

I haven't been to the master sword area in VR which I'm sure will be a slideshow :allears:

overall its what one expects from plastic lenses inside cardboard, but its still fun because the base game is Zelda BOTW which, imho, is a very good great video game :ssh:

also keeping the camera at Link's eye level makes it obvious how diminutive Link is, cause the world is enormous around him in a way I never noticed while playing standard third person

botw on switch is the most fun i've had playing a video game in an extremely long time and my only regret is that i'm very close to the end and once i've beaten it the experience will be over. i would say, with no exaggeration, there's no reason to make another open world sanbox-y RPG ever again because botw exists and nothing will ever beat this experience.

the only negative thing i can think to say about this game is that once i have beaten it, there's no way for me to completely erase my memory of the game and play it all over again completely unaware of how everything works. i would rank this against like F:NV or the original Dark Souls or SR 3&4 or DOOM 2016 in terms of being just an awesome fun game that is a joy to play.

If it makes you feel better, I ended up doing a whole replay (obtained it on Wii U first, then like a half year later I got a switch and bought it) and every few months I end up popping it back in and getting tons of hours of new stuff to discover.

Talk that poo poo; if I could just forget the whole landscape of BOTW and play my save again and wonder "Where am I?" and just wander off to see it all again fresh I'd be so happy. Very few games I'd want to do this for, but BOTW is definitely one of them.

The best parts of previous Zeldas are the dungeons. The best parts of BotW are all outside of the dungeons. There's nothing memorable about the insides of the Beasts and the design palettes of all 4 are nothing new, not to mention the 120 times we encounter the same design in shrines.

For maximum nostalgia the beasts should’ve been like in Shadow of the Colossus and the shrines should’ve been remastered versions of the best Zelda dungeons

Also the blood moon should’ve been the moon from Majora’s Mask and it rewinds time to three days earlier and that’s why all the monsters respawn.

I mean 100% I miss the old Zelda dungeons. BotW is great and all but it does not succeed in capturing the fun of the dungeons at all. It's an amazing overworld but the replacements don't hit the mark, at least for me.

also here's a stupid take

Personally I wouldn't mind both a giant BotW-esque overworld combined with traditional complex dungeons.

This is essentially what the original Zelda and Zelda II were anyway and those seem to be the games that BotW draws the most inspiration from.

What. The best dungeons in BotW are the Rito and Zoro ones for puzzles and the boss of the Gerudo one and even then they don't even come close to being memorable or challenging.

They decidedly were not. The beasts are the low point of an otherwise great game. The shrines gave me more of what I want from Zelda puzzles, but they were all bite sized.

Breath of the Wild 2 is coming out in 2024, and it's going to have an underground cave network, shrines integrated into the overworld, and multiple dungeons in the style of Hyrule Castle, and it's gonna make this game look like Bubsy 3D

Not having enough dungeons doesn't make the dungeons individually worse, and while they could stand to be longer I'd rather have a short dungeon that is cool and concisely encapsulates its gimmick than a dungeon that is long and boring.

I like a good dungeon as much as anyone, but IMO the small and minimalistic dungeon-replacements (shrines & divine beasts) were the perfect choice for this game which emphasized and focused entirely on the outdoors. The next Zelda will probably be more dungeon-oriented again, and that's fine too.

The next Zelda game should be more dungeon-oriented as a consequence of being an open-world game set in a vast underground network of huge vaulted caverns, sprawling ancient ruins, and labyrinthine Places Forgotten By Time.
