Ford doesn't need to be a denialist to win the denialist vote, he just needs to be the lowest common denominator on responding to climate change.

In most countries including this one, conservatives have moved on from "climate change isn't real" to "climate change is real, we just shouldn't do anything about it" and that definitely covers Ford's comments in that video. Sure, climate change is real, but we're already doing our part and there's no need to do more.

Ford also declared that Ontario has already done it's fair share to fight climate change earlier this week before his whole "floodings are sad" crocodile tears address.

My wife is working for the flood response. Yesterday they were politely requested under no circumstances not to trip Ford into the river. Also today PMJT showed up for selfies.

It seems awful from a policy perspective, but it's great politics. Admit the problem exists, claim you're doing something about it, and promise everyone that they won't have to make any sacrifices and everything will turn out okay. It shouldn't really surprising that message is pretty drat popular.

Wasn't the Alberta NDP's actual straight faced climate change take something like "Actually we need to greatly expand the tar sands so that we can afford to tackle climate change" ?

Baronjutter posted:Wasn't the Alberta NDP's actual straight faced climate change take something like "Actually we need to greatly expand the tar sands so that we can afford to tackle climate change" ? It's the position of every world government this side of Iceland to continue doing the thing we definitively know has created the crisis until such time as a market solution presents itself. The tar sands are just particularly pathetic because they've already been priced out of utility by the market all on its own, "big environment" just makes a useful scapegoat.

Can't wait until it becomes "climate change is real but it's God punishing us for letting the gays marry" or whatever other bullshit will eventually be spewed.

Sure, climate change is real, but we're already doing our part and there's no need to do more. My perception of conservative climate change deniers is heavily influenced by my retired Albertan neighbour who's still sure it's all a hoax. Last Christmas he was going on with a hypothesis that the Arctic will always be cold due to a lack of sun in the winter and any evidence to the contrary is fake. Might not be fair to refer to him as conservative - he strongly supports the liberals, making him left wing according to his relatives in Alberta.

I think our biggest enemy is not the climate change denier. They are outliers at this point and can probably be ignored. The biggest challenge will be to persuade all those who understand it’s a huge issue, but feel it’s too difficult/too expensive/too late to do anything about. The issue always reminds me of MLK Jr. letter from the Birmingham jail. But find and replace “racists” with “climate-passives”
