How do you deal with anti-crypto prejudice from society? (self.Bitcoin)
submitted 2 hours ago by hmgEqualWeather

Over the last couple of years I made the mistake of talking about crypto to people and now that crypto has crashed, people keep trying to point out that I am a loser and they keep arguing with me why crypto is a poor investment.

Even though I have diversified across all asset classes (not just crypto but property, bonds, stocks, etc) once you talk about crypto then you become known as "the crypto guy" and people assume you hold all your wealth in crypto and they keep bullying me about it.

I keep telling people that the crash from 20k to 6k is nothing compared to the crash from 1000 to 200 and the crash from 30 to 2. Bitcoin always comes back on the long run, and bitcoin has intrinsic value as a decentralised store of value almost a digital gold or offshore investment not beholden to any one jurisdiction. But people are so focused on recent price movements that they forget that now is the time to accumulate.

Same here, even with family... I just ignore it, don't need to defend my self. I assume it's a mix of being jelly when it goes up and self righteousnes when it goes down. Whatever.

Some people don't want to listen. Those you cannot win over. Just avoid them. They will only join when everybody else already joined, which will put them at the lowest level of the system. But before that, they will just try to stop you, so better let them be. They are the kind of people who don't try to be better than everyone else, they just try to make everyone else worse off.

Should I see a therapist because I am insane or is society insane? (self.misanthropy)
submitted 20 hours ago by hmgEqualWeather

I have a very intense hatred of humanity that I feel almost constant. It is triggered when I see or think about all the evil that humans commit. When I see how humans have destroyed the world, the environment, and the animals, I am able to freely hate humanity and feel justified in it.

I have I no attachment to my family, my friends or my colleagues.

Many people have told me online to see a therapist so I can help.

However, the problem is that I cannot tell whether I am insane because my views differ to society's or whether I am sane but society's views are insane. I don't visit a psychologist to pre-empt the risk that it is the latter and that professional help will simply make me insane.

How do I trivially verify that a character earned 5 million crystalcoins farming rats, as opposed to the game company making several millions of transactions to a dummy account to sell some of the crystalcoins to rubes? They'd have to be only slightly sneakier than regular cheaters in normal MMOs. The same goes for gambling.

they probably will mine on peoples phones too, and a hundred other shady things, but "an ERC20 token that they say will eventually be on an exchange"? they obvs have loads of those premined in the hope that it takes off and they can sell the tokens off for free money

bitcoin's use case is you want to pay or get paid over the internet for crimes. you can't use visa or paypal because customers will gently caress you with chargebacks and that'll get you shut down if the feds don't get to you first. now, really interesting bit here from the developer circa 2012 on legality:

quote:

Correct - aside from sports betting, all the various federal laws don't actually criminalize gambling itself. Instead, they put up all sorts of rules around transmission of funds for purposes of funding a gambling account, or rules about gambling debts. And then the interesting part - they go on to define "money." And Bitcoin clearly doesn't fall within their definition, though there is a catch-all "...any other form of financial transaction, as the Secretary and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System may jointly prescribe by regulation..."

So, to make Bitcoins illegal for gambling, the Fed would have to recognize them as a form of money. I don't see that happening in the ... well, ever.
amazing. he follows up:

quote:

Until I know/trust you, Bitcoins bought on a credit card can't be withdrawn as Bitcoins or gifted to those that are allowed to withdraw as Bitcoins for the obvious reasons. Fiat-money players can cash them back out to the same credit card they bought them on.

For "normal play" we eat all fees. So you buy at the exact MtGox spot price, which is computed as the midpoint of the current best bid&ask, and sell back at the instant spot price. If someone uses this to just "play the market" and not do any actual gambling, we charge our own estimated cost, around 12%, when they cash out. A 6x playthrough waives this fee, a 3x play-through waives half the fee, etc.

Any of the above can be waived on a case-by-case basis, and "Pure Bitcoin" players are never charged any such fees.

quote:

There's no set procedure. Of course "until I know you" doesn't scale, so in the future I may use something like what bitcoingateway.com used for selling Bitcoins on credit cards. Cumbersome, but AKAIK, not a single fraudulent transaction.
there's still an active-ish thread for it on bitcointalk and it suggests the developer may be the only man strong enough to remain pure and clean despite rolling around in the poop

quote:

to me

I'm really sorry for the delay. When you made the request before, it
was during a flurry of hack attempts on the server, where someone
(many?) were trying passwords from compromised bitcointalk accounts
against the Dragon's Tale server. The timing and one of the
fingerprinting heuristics I use made me think that the **********
account was one of those compromised accounts. That's why I sort of
went silent on you - I have quite a few people try to scam the game
and I find it's best not to engage them.

This morning I pulled up a backup for an unrelated issue and spent
some time looking for inconsistencies between the questions you
answered by email and server logs from before your withdraw attempt -
I found everything was consistent with your answers, so I have
replaced the 250 BTM. The server will be back online in an hour or so
- you can withdraw once it's back up. Once again, I'm sorry for the
overly cautious approach.

append-only databases are good for gambling bookkeeping because it’s totally transparent what bets were in. and prop betting really is a sort of temporary ad hoc contract so it’s a pretty good match for a smart contract; you can still cheat as the bookmaker by lying to the contract about the result, but then the database is mycrimes.txt. all in all a good use of the tech if embedded within a supportive legal system
