Maybe scuba diving as a full time job/hobby gets you used to stumbling around in an actively hostile environment, where you can't see more than 100 feet in any direction, and where enormous animals can just silently appear above you.

As a scuba diver, whales are absolutely my #1 fear. Probably not entirely rational. Snowglobe of Doom posted:100 feet? Try under 10 feet Sharks, on the other hand, are generally chill bros and they don't scare me at all. I've been around lots of sharks of various kinds; never great whites, but even great whites aren't that big of a deal if you're not at the surface, since they hunt by attacking things above them.

Okay, I object to the use of the term “body snatcher.” I think “grave robber” is more appropriate. “Body snatcher” implies that they want the bodies themselves for something.

Body snatchers took bodies and sold them to medical colleges in the 1800s. Laws in Britain regulated what kinds of bodies (prisoners, orphans, etc.) could be used for anatomy classes, so a business sprung up of stealing bodies and selling them when legal corpses became hard to get.

Ariong posted:Why ere people snatching bodies in the 1800s? They were stealing bodies for medical colleges. In the 1820's in the UK medicine was really taking off, and surgery especially. For this they needed anatomical specimens to dissect. The law at the time said you could only use the bodies of people who had died from suicide, prisoners or orphans for this, but by this time we had massively reduced the number of prisoners we were executing. This meant there was a massive shortage of bodies. This lead to the boom in body snatching by the so called 'Resurrection Men' who would pop down and dig you back up as soon as you had been buried and sell your corpse to a medical school. 19th C was the key time in history for body-snatching. In 1832 we passed the Anatomy Act which massively reduced the incidence. Aramoro has a new favorite as of 10:48 on Apr 29, 2019 |

Two body snatchers in Edinburgh called Burke and Hare murdered 16 people because selling bodies to surgeons was so lucrative. After he was executed, Burke's skin was made into a wallet and book cover, which are among the very many incredibly gnarly exhibits at the Surgeon's Hall Museum in Edinburgh today, which I highly recommend.

the case also tangentially involved speed surgeon Robert Liston, although in a positive fashion: wikipedia posted:According to Liston, he saw Mary Paterson's body in Knox's rooms and immediately suspected foul play. He knocked Knox down after an altercation in front of his students – Liston assumed some students had slept with her when she was alive, and that they should dissect her body offended his sense of decency. He removed her body for burial.[21]
