Return of the Jedi is cool and good. Torturing droids is bad, but Jabba is bad. This is why you shouldn't feel any remorse when sexy Leia chokes him to death, his cronies get blown up, and his Fettest Boba ends up in a giant anus.

Bogus Adventure posted:I believe the worst parts of TLJ is that it exists, and that there are people who will argue to the death that it is the best Star Wars movie. Even the more well-argued videos defending tlj - or at least the one or two I've seen - seem to like it on the message of basically unironically killing the past. that a new ideology is needed and that tearing down the old romanticism of star wars by constantly showing characters failing quests and anticlimaxing storylines can we build something new, tying it to burning the jedi temple down in order to rebuild. Which to me is loving insane. Even if tlj had managed to actually build, something, ANYTHING, ideologies do not come from burning down libraries and then reinventing the wheel yourself, which seems to be what the defenders want. They come from examining exactly what past ideologies accomplished, going against what went wrong, using what worked. Half the reason we're in the poo poo we're in right now is because of the lessons of the very recent past being forgotten and history repeating itself only stupider.

Is that even TLJ’s message? It’s directly articulated by the villain of the movie, not its hero, who enthusiastically/boneheadedly decides to perpetuate these star wars in his despite. The message of letting the past die is portrayed as a form of psychological self-defense from a totally selfish guy who really, really wants to murder his parents because they make him feel bad about his dumb choices in life.

When Kylo Ren said to "let the past die, kill it if you have to" he was actually speaking directly to millennials, advising that they rise up and purge the boomers. imo on that basis it's an A+ film

TLJ has no coherent philosophy. Trying to find one will just be an exercise in frustration

I thought I outlined that there were other points where that philosophy was pushed beyond Kylo (and to be honest, if Kylo's statement is complete bullshit not supported by anything else in the movie, then there is no temptation there.) Again, throughout the movie characters keep trying to do the "romantic" thing of trusting the scoundrel with a heart of gold or whatever and failing, and the idea is that there needs to be something """new""". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLYUc5t6wag Here's an example of a review that says TLJ did not go far ENOUGH, and that the biggest problem is that they went back on the theme of killing the past. Chomp8645 posted:When Kylo Ren said to "let the past die, kill it if you have to" he was actually speaking directly to millennials, advising that they rise up and purge the boomers. kill the boomers would have been a fine message but I kind of get the reading "burn down libraries" instead Hemingway To Go! fucked around with this message at 20:48 on Apr 30, 2019 |

the meta-narrative of letting go of the OT and making something new is absolutely cool and good and should have been a major focus of either this or better yet, the previous film but what was actually in the film, not our extrapolations, what actually came from the film was absolute steaming dogshit the film itself refused to give any of those ideas more than a cursory ponderance and if there were attempts in the film to actually demonstrate those ideas then they were so poorly articulated and executed that they functionally were not in the film because its not what the vast majority of audiences walked away with. that is a fault of bad film making, which this movie was chock full of sure, one could say "the movie did not go far enough" but what people are really saying is "this movie would have been good if it were made goodly." like sure, we can all imagine how we each think this movie could have been good. but the last jedi was bad. absolutely terrible. irredeemably terrible in almost every single way. a rare kind of awful. anything mildly interesting was itself immediately undone and surrounded by poo poo. it was a bad, miserable movie

My hot take from watching the current movies in the new trilogy (okay maybe not that hot since TFA came out 4 years ago) is that it feels like whoever's greenlighting these movies wants to innovate but is simultaneously caught in a trap of being too scared to do it because they feel they have a fan service/nostalgia quota to fill in every single scene. So we end up with a bunch of movies that are entertaining but lack any kind of unique identity, or that identity is held back by all the extra star wars nostalgia they feel like they've gotta shove into scenes, or something. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.
