SlothfulCobra posted:Our current social order was built around the paternalistic assumption that most people (and their families) will be entirely supported by their employer in a more straightforward feudalistic system, which is why it's assumed that most more complicated social support should be done through the employer, and many social support programs try to work like corporate subsidies for poverty wages than the state looking after its citizens. i can't think of any time in US history where this was true like, yeah, that's the myth, but when you start thinking back through the decades you'll have a hard time finding one where that description applies our current social order was built on the assumption of the availability of the government support and social services that were put in place to counter the worst excesses of the gilded age...and which are now being systematically dismantled

it applied maybe for a select caste of professionals who got things like defined benefit pensions for a fleeting moment in time. or when a an engineer or an insurance adjuster or something like that, jobs that required a college degree 50 years ago, could expect to work at the same firm for 30 to 40 years and get promotions and raises and a gold watch at the end

The concern isn't that we're "only" being passively monitored, but that at any time, thanks to the insane backlog of data stored on all of us, if one ever DOES become a political target, warranted or not, everything needed to put you away for as long as deemed necessary is already there, waiting to be leveraged. see: stalinism

I think the idea is to draw upon people's feelings about McDonalds and how artificial the McDonalds concept of happiness is that they shove into their advertising, and to resonate with people over some feeling of authenticity. Except then at the end instead of their new product line making sense from the advertising, they just gave it a bunch of internet-speak style names instead of "anxiety" or "depression". Like two different marketing ideas collided. Maybe nothing means anything and it's just a bizarre postmodern advertising statement to draw attention. Wouldn't be the first time Burger King pulled that trick.
