i can't think of any time in US history where this was true

like, yeah, that's the myth, but when you start thinking back through the decades you'll have a hard time finding one where that description applies

our current social order was built on the assumption of the availability of the government support and social services that were put in place to counter the worst excesses of the gilded age...and which are now being systematically dismantled

yup, and the way our legal system is set up, literally everyone is a law breaker and chances are we have all already admitted guilt, passively or not, through our online social presence.

The concern isn't that we're "only" being passively monitored, but that at any time, thanks to the insane backlog of data stored on all of us, if one ever DOES become a political target, warranted or not, everything needed to put you away for as long as deemed necessary is already there, waiting to be leveraged.

nah, it was accessible to more than just college degree professionals

my grandpa worked as like a regional manager for gas stations, didn't have a degree or anything, got a lifetime pension that he's still cashing in. he's been retired far more than he ever worked. my grandma worked for at&t and didn't have a degree or anything and she was getting pension checks until her recent death too, once again, far longer than she ever worked.

the window may have been small, but that post-ww2 era was pretty lucrative for workers. yes, i know we blew up the rest of the world. just saying that that dream was real and attainable and you didn't have to be part of an elite caste to access it

it's actually both better and worse than you might think

according to the article, even after someone's Tumblr was deleted or taken down for whatever reason, other people's links to their poo poo might still work. but you can make a new blog with the same blog name as the deleted one, or something like that, and then those leftover links will point to the new blog instead

so people who hated fascists started snapping up the usernames of deleted or banned nazis, racists, transphobes, etc, and replacing everything with Toy Story meme spam as a way to get rid of any quotes and reblogs and other links that survived their deletion/ban

aside from running a brand parody twitter, the dude was also active in that community. so now that Tumblr is apparently finally cracking down on hate speech, they see that this guy has a whole bunch of Nazi blog names on his account and they mashed the ban button without a second thought

lmao a payday loan from your tech company employer

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/05/02/tesla-adds-employee-loan-benefit-workers-describe-unpredictable-hours.html

quote:

Tesla has rolled out a new benefit for its workers: employee loans, facilitated through the London-based financial tech start-up, Salary Finance, and funded via its partner Axos Bank.

In correspondence distributed to Tesla employees and seen by CNBC, the companies said that workers could use the new benefit to borrow money at relatively affordable rates and pay it back directly out of their paychecks.

Typically, Salary Finance lets workers borrow up to 20% of their salary and pay it back at rates under 5%. The company spun out of Blenheim Chalcot in London, and is venture-backed by that firm along with insurance giants Legal & General.

By offering a “financial well-being” benefit, Tesla gives active employees a way to handle their debt and expenses without turning to higher-cost alternatives like a 401k loan, credit cards with a high annual percentage rate, or traditional payday loans. That takes some pressure off those who would leave the company in search of higher wages, and could potentially stem attrition.

The electric vehicle maker does not make money when employees take loans through the service, according to the Salary Finance website for Tesla employees.

Three current employees told CNBC that they are happy to have another financial benefit, but view employee loans as a band-aid solution. They said they would prefer more predictable income from a set, 40-hour work week, or if possible, better wages and meaningful raises. These people declined to be named because the company does not authorize them to talk to the press.

I think the idea is to draw upon people's feelings about McDonalds and how artificial the McDonalds concept of happiness is that they shove into their advertising, and to resonate with people over some feeling of authenticity.

Except then at the end instead of their new product line making sense from the advertising, they just gave it a bunch of internet-speak style names instead of "anxiety" or "depression". Like two different marketing ideas collided.

Maybe nothing means anything and it's just a bizarre postmodern advertising statement to draw attention. Wouldn't be the first time Burger King pulled that trick.

quote:

When Detroit filed for bankruptcy in 2013 and made major budget cuts, it set off a wave of police officers leaving the force to find better-paying opportunities in other cities. The resulting police shortage and ongoing retention problem has brought another wave — of private security companies.

It's become a booming industry here in recent years, with the largest contractor, Securitas, reporting 25% year-over-year growth since the city's bankruptcy.

Another successful player in the business is Threat Management Center, run by ex-Army paratrooper Dale Brown. His 60-person VIPER force serves a client roster of over 5,000 private citizens and 100 businesses. Altogether, he said, the company brings in about $2 million a year.

"Our goal is to create conditions where violence does not occur," said Brown, who began teaching his own brand of self-defense in the early 1990s. "We deter violent criminal behavior by projecting strength. So our vehicles have all white strobe lights. Our vehicles are black and chrome."

But how do the local police feel about it? Asked about the rise of private security in the city, Police Chief James Craig said, "Do we think that security guards who are visible in neighborhoods deter crime? Yes. Can security guards replace police officers? No."
