corporate was tipped when someone became suspicious that one store was actually ordering double digits worth of bbry devices and investigated

also: remember when bbry sent a playbook to anyone who was willing to write an app for it? even if that app was something like "shows the current time in big numbers on the screen"?

i wonder if crackberry is still in operation and still has active posters doing their best impersonation of comp.sys.amiga.advocacy circa 2000?

I spent a lot of time on my phone at home loving around

I bought the cheap iPad and it’s a bigger phone works great

I had a Coby tablet on “honeycomb” that worked for a while but was slow stupid poo poo , which I replaced with a fire tablet that was also slow stupid poo poo .

The fire tablet would run out of RAM or something rendering a webpage so if you scrolled down it , it would just be blank past a point and you couldn’t see it anymore . I don’t know what the gently caress that is and all the searches for fixing things go to XDA forums so I threw it in the trash .

I’ve never seen anyone with an android tablet live otherwise so I assume that was the expected lifecycle of these things

i got one through that program. remember how its apps were programmed in flash? i spent a day or two porting a dumb little flash game i made for a class project and submitted it and they sent me a playbook. i looked it up on the app store about six months after launch and it had 4 stars which was cool i guess but i think spoke more to the desolation of that landscape.

i still have it somewhere. it does still charge and turn on. super solidly built and super duper useless.

yeah I think it's from that contrarian era when ofc iOS didn't have flash because it was a brand new platform finally free of pluggin trash and rim decided to combine their quality platform knowledge with the high quality mobile app development experience of adobe to spite them

its not particularly analytical - its a mostly journalism as a first draft of history, as told through extensive on-the-record interviews with the two principals (sillyballs and laserdilz). its pretty easy to read between the lines as to what happened and how it all fell apart, though

basically:
1) they grew so fast they didnt take the time to properly deal with tech debt and build proper future roadmaps so the code became this incredibly unstable pile of spaghetti c++ near the end (which is why late-era blackberrys were so amazingly unstable). its almost a perfect case study in how tech debt will destroy you if you do nothing to address it
2) the co-ceo structure worked fine when the company could do no wrong and was growing like gangbusters, but once things turned tough the co-ceo structure strangled every attempt to turn the company around (again, an almost perfect case study in why companies usually have only one chief executive officer)

the actual details are amazing
