my sister and i once took a month to drive from new york to la, and part of that trip took us through the deep south for the first time in our lives. at one point in Georgia we were standing in the middle of a plantation turned wetland preserve, stifling in the muggy heat, staring at the canals full of murky water, alligators, and razor sharp grasses, and my sister observed "running away from a plantation must have loving sucked"
