That was set up pretty well tbh, the lead boy's whole escape plan was keeping a fire going at all times to signal passing ships, and the book ends with the whole island burning, which is why the ship investigates.

Yes, this episode also has "Uh, Tony, please, no. I just ate a whole plate of dingamagoo" and Homer singing Gary Glitter in his head

Top ten episode easily

That's actually not that hard but they're all going to be from seasons 9-11.

In no particular order, I'd select from among:
Behind the Laughter
Brother's Little Helper
Bart to the Future
The Wizard of Evergreen Terrace
Bart the Mother
Lisa Gets an "A"
Mayored to the Mob
Homer to the Max
The City of New York vs Homer Simpson
Lisa's Sax
Bart Star
The Joy of Sect
Trash of the Titans

Do those stack up well with episodes from seasons 2-8? No, not really. But they're the best I could think of in 9-30 and there are some solid gags mixed in.

The Max Power episode didn't really do much for me overall (at the time it felt like something was going off the rails a bit), but I still think the "You like Thai?" "Tie good. You like shirt?" bit is some top drawer material

Best episodes:

Larry Burns (love me some Rodney Dangerfield, also introduced me to Anyway You Want It)

Scorpio

Viva Ned Flanders (can the poems, it's arse whooping time)

Homer and Mr Burns stuck in a log cabin (who knows, maybe I'll be the unlucky one to be fired! Not bloody likely)

I will not shut up about the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. I talk about them all the time and work them into every conversation I have. I built a shrine in my room for the yellow one who died because sadly no one noticed because she died around 9/11. Wanna see it?

And now for something completely different
I humbly submit that, while not the #1 ep overall, "Homer Goes to Clown College" includes jokes that transcend regular humor into the realm of the sublime:

1) "Homer, the section you're supposed to monitor is on fire." *circus music*
2) "That's it! You people have stood in my way long enough, I'm going to clown college!"
3) "Uh, burn that seat."
4) Homer beating up the Krusty Burglar

The best one though is when Homer crashes his clown car into a tree and flies out of the car after a slight pause:

The timing is just :discourse: , it's like the entire concept of humor distilled into a few perfect seconds.

Same here. I also love the growing progression of homer only being able to write lyrics about stuff on TV and even he realizes that one sucked

The new one seems like a spiritual sequel to Behind the Laughter. It's a true crime documentary about someone stealing Lisa's secret cash college fund ("$642. Lisa's dream of attending college for three weeks, with no meal plan, was crushed.")

I dunno, it sucked, but I guess it's always a bit better when they break the structure.

There's a shitload of characters who don't sound like themselves anymore in it because they interview witnesses. Lou, Mr Burns (that one's really sad), Frink, Willie, Martin, tons of Marge.

There's a breaking bad montage where the bullies of the school cook slime for Bart. It doesn't make a lot of sense.

Lisa's alibi is she was at her hopscotch tutor.

Ken Burns cameos as himself, driven mad by how boring Grandpa is.

The characters even look kinda off-model now.

Great layered joke with Homer fantasizing about a lovely amusement park, partially built with soiled mattresses available in the classifieds seen earlier in the episode.
