my cat is norris posted:The thing that eliminated my arachnophobia was this forum's fine series of critterquesting threads. Something about those threads completely rewired my brain and helped me to see spiders and similar creepies in a whole new way! I am grateful. Bugs of all kinds used to terrify me, I once spent a night sleeping on the couch just because there was a big moth in my bedroom. No idea what changed things, but these days I'm aghast at even accidentally washing a silverfish down the drain and I've almost been late for work a couple of times because I had to rescue spiders from the shower area before I could get ready in the morning. The only things on land that still horrify me are slugs. gently caress those awful things.

Many years on SA has exposure therapy'd me to some types of spiders - jumping spiders, peacock spiders, tarantulas etc. Every other kind of glossy black spider still bugs the hell out of me though and I will absolutely skip pages of other threads when someone makes a 'crazy giant spider' post and everyone races to one-up eachother with more spiderposting. I appreciate spidercontent being spoilered in this, the holiest of holy, safest of safe spaces here on SA so everyone can enjoy this thread without having their idiot dumb brains screaming their phobias. You're being inclusive and that's cute as hell anyway here's my fat idiot

He spent like 10 minutes tying me to my chair with web. When he jumped to another chair I spent some time trying to get a good pic, and every time I got my face really close he'd cock his head back to look me right in the eye I will try to post one of the pics later

ToxicSlurpee posted:I remember reading that there are evolutionary psychological reasons for it; spiders and snakes freak people the gently caress out because so many of them are nasty poisonous. While most phobias can be overcome arachnophobia is one of the toughest ones to get rid of. Modern homo sapiens evolved in Africa, where a lot of insects, arachnids, and parasites are legitimately dangerous. That fear might not be useful if you live in Belgium, but those instincts are still there.

To the folks in here who love spiders, you should check out the sci-fi novel Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky! It's about humans terraforming a planet and setting up a nanovirus to uplift monkeys to be friends on the planet when they come back to settle on it. Except the virus misses and it uplifts spiders instead, and migod are they great. There are no pictures in the book so I was able to spend the whole time being delighted by spider civilization and culture.

I just need to say thank you for spoilering spider pics. I am one of those who completely freak out by the sight of something with 8 legs. Yes, even those with colours that everyone else think are cute. I have literally dropped a laptop when a spider showed up on screen. I tried to get professional phobia treatment, but got worse, not better. So repeat: THANK YOU!!! for spoilering spiders!
