To be quite fair the Iowa-class never did much in WW2 either. By the time they entered service, it was already clear that the age of naval direct fire gunnery was done, and they mostly spent their time as carrier escorts.

Most of this is kind of post-facto nonsense. The problem with the AAA suite on German warships, in particular the Bismarck, was that it was poo poo, not that the Swordfish somehow cleverly escaped the engagement envelope in a way no other plane could.

A faster, modern torpedo bomber (a Kate, for instance, or an Avenger) could have made the same attacks with as good, if not better, a result. The 10.5cm gun problem would be the same (the Swordfish can't fly lower than either of those), and the manually controlled 3.7cm guns would put up an even worse performance against faster planes. The Swordfish was good at sinking planes because there weren't any alternatives in the early war in Europe, and by the late war in Europe most Axis poo poo had already been sunk or defected or scuttled.

Huh, I learned that back when the History Channel was wall to wall WWII shows and it made enough sense that I never really questioned it, the more you know
Is there any truth to the canvas skin not detonating antiaircraft shells? Because that one seems more legitimate than the targeting issues

Fun to shoot targets, but I don't feel the need to carry or anything. I live in TX and am probably one of a handful of people without a carry license. I intend to get one, just because, but I'm in no hurry to be in that particular database, I guess. I only have the one small 9mm pistol, and a shotgun.
'Course my dad has all the guns I would ever want - mostly rifles though, since he hunts.
Even if you aren't going to own a gun, I think you should learn to shoot, how they work, etc. It may not help if faced with a handgun, but then again, it might. Uncertain times and all. Most ranges will rent guns.

Yeah but it's easier to point to the more exotic military hardware (lol that drones are exotic) to highlight the argument of protecting yourself from the government as being a very out of date idea. Worked in the 1880s but we the people have lost that edge a long, long time ago.

Everything else I inherited from my dad who mostly inherited them from other family members.

Black powder rifles are pretty fun I guess.

I think my .270 is probably my favorite thing because I can use it to put holes in stuff that you can't see without binoculars.

Responsible parental gun ownership doesn't seem impossible though.
I have a little girl and don't have any plans to get rid of the guns. When she is old enough to figure out how to open a door then I'm gonna spend all the ammo with the exception of a few shells for the shotgun and some .40 for the Glock. The gun safe is bolted to the concrete foundation, in the basement in a locked room. The ammo safe is hidden elsewhere. Not even my wife has the combo to either. It's in my last will and testament so she can at least clean it out when I die.

Not gonna wade deep into this, as I've done it before and I'm tired of the stupidity it elicits, but this attitude ignores vast swaths of military history, the relative strengths of guerilla action, and the last 15 years of the Iraq war. A civil war in the US between the left and the right would be incredibly bloody and bad for all involved. But it would be far worse for the unarmed and urban populations than the armed and rural portions.
