I mean generally, I assume all these politican "I met a voter who" stories are total bullshit, but lots of people realize the system is loving them over, and want someone who would change it. Trump made mouth noises to that effect many times, and if to you or I it seems obvious he was full of poo poo, I could certainly see someone voting for Trump/Bernie/AOC on basically the same basis.

Many of his supporters are terrible people, but there is a certain emotional appeal for someone who claims he can solve everything. We generally don't hear that kind of blind confidence from politicians because that's not how politics work. Some people voted for Trump because they are evil. Some voted because they were tired of getting hosed over. The happy part of this is Trump is polling poorly in those Rust Belt states and Independents (who he absolutely needs) have voted in favor of Democrats in almost every election since 2016. This keeps Trump up at night:

Some voted because they were tired of getting hosed over. I've seen this happen first-hand, over and over. You don't even have to be an oblivious idiot like Trump to make it work, you can be a conniving huckster or a psychopathic genius, all you have to do is project this absolutely self-assured, disdainful confidence and 100% rightness about everything, and never ever ever admit you are wrong or anything is your fault and for some reason you will get a ton of people to just nod along to everything you say. Even if you've repeatedly screwed the same people over and over, they will keep coming back to hear the same story and buy in again and again, just because the story and the myth they're being sold is what they want to hear. Guy I know has spent the last ten years taking on massive engineering projects that he can barely cope with, failing spectacularly more often than not, and still manages to get people to trail along merrily behind his pipe and sign over 5-figure checks up front sight unseen just because he says he can do anything and everyone else who has failed at a given thing are idiots. e: me included I guess, gently caress sorry thread

We really have no idea how a desperate Trump campaigns. He surprised himself in 2016 in that he wasn't really trying and was just looking forward to the after election grift. This time he wants to win and he's got real thin skin on polls. Anything that makes him uncomfortable and unhinged is alright by me.
