A) this is instead of, you know, lowering the prices so that people could afford this life saving medicine themselves

B) the CDC has just approved a different, equally effective drug (from the same company) that has fewer side effects and is likely to basically replace Truveda. So all Gilead have actually done is agree to offload their soon-to-be-excess stock to people who weren't going to be buying their pills anyway

Probably, it wouldn't surprise me.

I'd also put money on them having run the numbers to figure out exactly how much they could donate without impacting the number of people needing their other product. So they'd know exactly how many people were going without their medicine due to the price.

it’s up to the IRS, roughly, to appraise the value of the donation. sadly I don’t think it’s public

Maybe the American healthcare industry just really likes ironic symbolism. Same reason they replaced the rod of Asclepius, god of medicine, with the symbol of a god of traders and thieves and who also led the dead to the underworld.

fly away troll. There is no evidence of a genetic link between pit bulls and aggressive behavior towards humans, although they may be more likely to be aggressive towards other dogs.

https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2019/01/dog-breeds-really-do-have-distinct-personalities-and-they-re-rooted-dna

quote:

Because the genetic and behavioral data come from different sets of dogs, the work cannot link a breed’s specific behavioral tendencies to any one gene. “This paper doesn't call out any particular breed for its behavior. It relies on behaviors that are found in many breeds,” says Heidi Parker, a genome scientist at the National Human Genome Research Institute who, with Ostrander, pioneered some of the early work on dog genomes.

Thus, for example, Serpell’s behavioral work has shown that pit bulls are aggressive toward other dogs but not people, but this new analysis can’t lead to a DNA test of that behavior. However, Serpell and his colleagues are starting more studies looking at the DNA linked to within-breed variation in behavior, a step in that direction. Such work has been done on a small scale to pinpoint the gene for superfriendly behavior.

Until more of those connections are made, “I am not sure how widely accepted the results will be,” says Robert Wayne, an evolutionary biologist at the University of California, Los Angeles. He and dog genetics expert Elinor Karlsson from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester point out that this study finds a much bigger role for genetics in shaping behavior than previous studies and so think more work needs to be done to verify the findings.

True, but Hermes was also the protector of the forgotten and the downtrodden, the god of boxing, and the inventor of masturbation so they aren't even living up to that example.

Talk shit, get bzzzt.

genetics are not connectable to learned behaviour. There may be many dogs who are bad with other dogs, or even afraid of humans because of a history of abuse, but saying that it's a genetic condition would be like claiming pellagra victims had bad genes since they go demented each year.

The problem will always be caused by or exasperated horrifically by capitalism under capitalism. We need a mass spray-neuter public works project, free dog food, public doghouses, covered vaccines, universal vet care, and of course socialization and training programs. And while we do dog socialism we can do human socialism, even if the dogs deserve it more than us.

yes? did you intend to just summarize the findings of the researchers or was this supposed to be ironic? although aggression is rather complicated and isn't directly equatable with a propensity for violence. In any case if you read the article you'd see that even this relatively controversial study only claims it can explain ~15% of the difference in observed behavior between breeds by genetics.

Or maybe just less dogs since people don't really need them for hunting/protection anymore and they suck, lol imagine you taxes going to loving free dog food, and vet bills for a bunch of people with dogs.

I never understood why I as a person in this society have to share the streets with those hosed up hunting animals, they maul kids, attack randoms, bark, bite etc gently caress dogs and their owners.

Ah dog people, the only way to defend their choice of pet is to start attacking people's mental health.

For reference: my aunt has a dog, and dogs are generally nice, but free dog food and vet visits sounds hella dumb. Mandatory sterilization of all pets is good tho.
