The Beef is mostly fine in the movie. The movie's biggest problem is that the script feels like three different ones mashed together. You can tell that at some point John Hurt's character was intended to be Abner Ravenwood, and Ray Winstone's constantly switching sides got really loving old after his, like, fifth double-cross.

Let's not forget that CS includes "Mutt Williams," another protagonist named after a dog who happens to be Indy's son.

I know Spielberg kind of threw Lucas under the bus for saying he trusted him in choosing the movie's macguffin, but Spielberg's unconditional love of Shia LaBeouf sure didn't help.

I'd say a lot of the hatred towards Shia LaBeouf did come from what appeared like a co-ordinated effort by Hollywood to make him THE BIGGEST STAR. It really felt like he was omnipresent and part of every major film 10 years ago, and I'd put a lot of that resentment down to pushback against that.

Shia can be a good actor. He was just kind of an odd choice to include in an Indiana Jones film that was already full of very odd choices.

It was Temple, but Raiders is honestly even gorier so I'm kind of surprised.

Like, Temple got its PG straight, without edits required; Raiders had to be edited slightly to avoid an R in the ark scene (the head explosion looks odd because of this).

e: also, the 80s MPAA very, very notably did not have the views you're sarcastically attributing to them, that's mostly since the fundie takeover of America. 80s PG movies had cursing and boobs all the time; the Transformers cartoon movie had a "poo poo" in it and Bill and Ted called each other fags, and on the boob front you've got Sixteen Candles, the Airplanes, Splash, Sheena...

The story goes Transformers added the word "poo poo" to avoid a G Rating.

Somebody mentioned that Raiders is the more violent movie overall, but I wonder if the much more oppressive atmosphere of ToD (combined with the heart extraction and Gremlins) contributed to PG-13 more than anything.

Unless I’m remembering wrong, Trump seemed to be leading that conversation, so it seems okay that he’s not persona non grata for life because he was laughing along with a far more powerful person’s disgusting comments. Still bad, but maybe not “gently caress him forever” bad, especially if he apologized.

No. gently caress him forever for the conversation. He should have called Trump out strongly and abrasively. Also, gently caress him for being intensely complicit in the war machine that is America.

It's pretty well-documented that it was Temple of Doom and Gremlins. Both were movies with a lot of graphic violence but weren't quite bad enough to receive an R rating, leading to complaints from parents about what their kids were being exposed to.

I suspect Jaws, Raiders, and Poltergeist laid the groundwork for the issue, and Temple and Gremlins just made people go "okay this has to give in one direction or another."

The Cameo

The real reality will turn out to be that the corporations that were now buying movie studios left and right knew there was a space between "adult" R movies and "family" PG movies that could precisely target the prime demographic of teenagers, without having to put things in that might turn them off from a PG movie and peppering in "exciting" things like limited cursing or a quick peek at a titty. Studios then came up with PG-13 with the MPAA, and looked at the most recent "scandalous" PG movies and told everyone "oh it's because of these". Which, given what I've read about Hollywood over its entire history, is probably what actually happened.

I always heard that they were going to get an R rating but Spielberg lobbied to get it knocked down to PG since since R rated movies don’t get merchandising tie ins. Everyone was chasing the Star Wars toy money at the time. I was really young but I remember Gremlins having a bunch of tie in promotions with KFC.
