Ever heard the first episode of a podcast and it becomes your favorite podcast immediately?

This just happened to me with the Gossip Mongers Podcast

David Earl, Joe Wilkinson, and Poppy Hillstead read out unsubstantiated rumours sent in by listeners. At the end of each episode they choose their favourite piece of gossip and help spread it further by getting Poppy to shout it out the window.

Behold the strange tales of the wizard of Duncraig, the horse fiddler and the tragic tale of wellybaby. This is the funniest podcast I have heard in ages.

This is three episodes in now and is the funniest podcast I have ever heard. I cannot listen to it while in public.

You weren't kidding huh? I risked it and found myself cackling on a public bus, so thanks for that.

The little sound bits edited into the background and the text to speech interjections are great.

Man I laughed hard at that Finnish guy. Well, I laughed a lot in general. Was listening at work with earbuds and colleagues probably though I was having some sort of breakdown. I hope they’ll do more soon. But it’s not weekly?

A friend of mine (along with a really oddly timed post in GBS) turned me onto a podcast called Death of August (which is about the death of porn actress August Ames) by journalist Jon Ronson. Her husband Kevin posts(ed?) on SA with the name Darkpriest. It's a really interesting and compelling 7 episode podcast! I'm currently listen to Jon Ronson's other podcast series which is called "The Butterfly Effect" which is about the creation of Pornhub and the impact it's had on the porn industry.

The zoology podcast, Drunk Safari, often guests a guy from Boars, Gore and Swords, who is pretty funny. Don't listen to the show though so I couldn't say.

Are there any good organised crime podcasts that are a bit more general than Mafia or Crimetown? I'm really looking for something that gives an overview as well as stories from several different groups worldwide, like the Mexican Cartels, Yakuza etc as well as the US/Italian Mafia. I know of Our Thing but it's not on Podcast Addict.

Not sure if this is quite what you're looking for, but The Sitdown is an organized crime podcast that covers various organized crime syndicates. I've only listened to the first few episodes so far but I enjoy it. Mike Recine is a stand-up comic and I forget what the second host does, but the show has a comedic slant at times. It's basically "guys shoot the poo poo and talk about mobsters and organized crime groups" rather than in-depth reporting and such.

If you happen to listen to either Chapo Trap House or Cum Town, several of the hosts of those pods have been on The Sitdown because Recine is in their circle of friends. Recine was also on Episode 222 of Chapo.

The creators of the show come off really poorly they don’t try to portray them well, also, they get into how people of colour are over represented as well as drug offenses, also gets into how people’s rights are violated in terms of signing their rights away to be in the show. I’d say it portrays cops less than good but they do some hand waving for the cops which can be a bit eye rolling

That being said they talk to a former cop who was on the show who is now a Defense attorney has some interesting insight. It covers from inception of the show to now both the cops and victims plus the production

Sounds interesting thanks. TBH I am no fan of the cops, and there was some recent milestone (30 years?) where people were writing these obnoxious articles about how the show portrayed ~are heroes~ against the zombie hordes. If it’s not that by being even a little critical it’s good for me. I’d be extra interested in hearing what that prosecutor says, looking forward to checking out 🙏

It feels like they’re really going to go into the victims and how it affects them there was one whole episode on a sad story of a suicidal person who ended up on cops and how it portrayed him as a villain

Listened to the first 4 episodes of Running from Cops. Very glad to know that America's Largest Street Gang™ has normalized their bullying by curating and editing a wildly popular TV show for three decades, very normal country.

I had never heard of :siren:Live PD:siren: until today's episode, not even in passing in any way, he was very on the nose in saying that you either know it or you don't. Feel like I would have caught a glimpse of it considering ther 2 million bootlickers who watch it every week but don't feel like Id like it much anyway lol.

Sorry of this is TMI about my own non-pod opinions for this thread, but if you feel ways about cops (as a profession or as a show) you should check it out! Good rec thanks.

Are there any literary theory podcasts? Almost every book podcast I see is either "talking about nerd poo poo" or interviews of writers.

I'm looking for something that focuses on critical theory applied to literature (or even pop lit) rather than enthusing about X new release.

On a related note, I'm about to begin a career in the publishing industry. Are there any podcasts about publishing from inside the profession? I figure it's a long-shot but worth asking.

Yeah its a good listen. I used to live in Spokane, so when they mentioned they went there when they needed more white suspects it made sense.

A toxic coworker mentioned loving a show that was described as “live footage of police arresting people with no narrative,” so now I know what they were talking about. If they broadcast executions viewership would be easy seven figures and the staff would be celebrities.

Print Run is a podcast by two literary agents, one of whom is becoming an author. If you give to their patreon, you get access to their pay only episodes where they critique first pages, query letters, and the like.

The Query Show by Blair Thornburgh is by one agent, but focuses on queries exclusively.

Writing Excuses focuses on the writing craft and is by some big names in the genre.

Shipping and Handling is another podcast about two agents talking about the business from the inside, and they are very open with their opinions.

What specifically are you looking for?

Are there any other podcasts like Mystery Show that are actually decent? Short, engaging, slice-of-life human interest piece sort of stuff. I just tried Heavyweight and it almost feels like a parody of Mystery Show. Could've just been the handful of episodes I listened to that might not be indicative of the general quality of the show, but it was self-important, unnecessarily ponderous, and ultimately unsatisfying in its conclusions.

Dang I was gonna recommend Heavyweight but sounds like wasn’t a good fit. Guess it comes down to if you like the host or not, I find him charming but yeah he can be a bit much sometimes. Episode #16 where he tries to learn if Rob Corddry broke his arm as a child is fascinating.

Oh hey that was me! Glad people are enjoying it. I love hearing security stories, and it kind of had a feel like the books Kevin Mitnick wrote. Fits in nicely with defcon pen-tester talks. The only little quibble I have is a lot of the time, the tone of his voice sounds almost like he's pleading with or begging the listener, even though the content of what he's saying isn't pleading. Very minor issue though.

Having read 3 of Darkpriest's A/T threads about working in the porn biz, I listened to the recommended "Last days of August" and Ron Johnson's Ron Swanson's Jon Ronson's prior podcast "Butterfly Effect". I was kind of dreading some sort of horrible revelation about Darkpriest, but it just left me feeling sad and sorry for everyone involved. A tragedy happened, and deeply damaged people were poorly equiped to deal with it. Of course they turn on one another, the rumour mill goes into overdrive, and everyone left gets hurt more.

They were well made podcasts, but they sure aren't very uplifting.

Since you mention it, I want to recognize that this thread has given me a lot of great podcasts that I wouldn't have seen otherwise and most of them were mini-series: Bear Brook, Broken Harts, Running from Cops, Aaron Hernandez, and August all come to mind.
