It's only the Final Battle once all the players are ready.

Team Galactic is pretty clearly a cult, especially in Plat. Even the world's oldest 27-year-old has enough charisma to bullshit the dumbest grunts in Pokémon.

Like, Team Skull grunts are also dummies but they also aren't meant to be seen as a threat—or even as adults—so it's not the same.

My favorite moment of my current playthrough of this game is Cyrus openly admitting there's no way his plan actually involves his grunts.

He basically gives you the "You've seen how incompetent they are. You think there's room for those guys in my perfect world?"

Refreshingly honest.

That implies that Galactic Grunts are capable of thinking.

In fact, in the Pokemon Adventures manga, I think they're all brainwashed except for the Admins. Cyrus also actually gets reformed and gets a happy ending (along with Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars).

Having joined Cyrus in slagging on his grunts, though, I have to say that Mars's Purugly has somehow managed to nearly totally wreck me each time I've fought it in the story, despite having no real trouble with anything other than that one Pokémon. Both times, I had to send poor Bidoof/Bibarel out to take a KO while I got someone Revived. :911:

Based on what I've seen, Cyrus should probably at least keep the one cat around.

Part 5: An Eternaty

Windworks Takeover!

Hey it's a fight Pop can deal with no problem. These grunts are good training.

I can't believe Team Galactic are trying to collect Joltik en mass!

You don't have an inkling of what Team Galactic is trying to achieve! Of course, they don't tell a grunt like me anything, either... but still!

They're gonna take away my Pokemon for messing this one up... humph! Just you wait! Our Commander will smoosh you!

Bit early for a Commander, must mean they're not that tough!

My name is Mars! We've been trying to create a new world that's better than this one... but people have shown little understanding about what we do. You don't understand either, do you? It's a little saddening... so, let's have a battle to decide what we should do next. If I win, you leave. If you win, we, Team Galactic will leave!

Galactic Commander Battle

Ah dammit since this Zubat has an actual attacking move, Pop won't win the damage race.

We don't have time for this nonsense, so onto the main event!

Look at the evolution level, I feel like we're encountering this thing a bit too early, yeah? Well, I think it's a cool way of making a boss fight, even if they're fudging the rules a bit. Obviously, Purugly has some real mean stats for this early, it'll outspeed absolutely everything you have and while its strongest attack is Scratch, it still deals a nice chunk. Regardless, it's somewhat flimsy with most of its points going to Speed, but with Return and a whole host of TMs, it'll do anything you really fancy, so it's a nice reward for sticking with a cat for so long.

So what's my strategy against this thing? Use my most defensive member and hope for Razor Leaf crits. Uh, that's it, I don't have much right now, and that's the main problem with this fight, it's pretty nasty this early. Still, Monferno rips this thing apart and Prinplup just got Pluck, so you should be fine.

With a couple of Super Potions, we'll be just fine. We'll definitely need this move too.

That's all right, though. I quite enjoyed our battle.

My, my. Lose to a child, will you? But, no matter. We've collected plenty of electricity. With the power we obtained, we can do something quite spectacular. It seems quite obvious to me, Charon, the genius even the boss recognizes. Now, Mars, we should be going.

Will you shut it! The boss is the only person in the world who's allowed to order me around! You can keep quiet around me! You only joined us recently. Don't think you're important! I guess it's time to say good-bye and leave for the time being!

Valley Windworks

It was for creating a new universe, or so they claimed. Nothing they said made any sort of sense to me. I can't tell you how grateful I am for you saving me. I can finally see my little daughter again!

Yuck! Papa, you're stinky! Go shower now, stinky!

Oh, sorry! Ahaha! They had me working nonstop!

Thank you, Trainer! You made those bad people go away! I think the balloon Pokemon will come visiting again!

Oh, yes, a balloon Pokemon appears in front of the windworks. It's always a certain day of the week, but I'm not sure which day. Could its appearance have something to do with this windworks using wind-generated energy?

The bringer of contentment... your target is the Pokemon statue of Eterna City. The bringer of ageing... your target is the Pokemon that sleeps on today.

Mysterious, looks like we'll have to stop their statue plot in Eterna, whatever that's about!

Looker Encounter

I have, therefore, come running. So, the Team Galactic. Where are they? ... You have run them off, you say? You are a Trainer, but...? Very well! I shall go investigate inside!

Superb! Though you are young, you are a Trainer through and through! Very well! I shall pursue the culprits! I have received tips that the Team Galactic hideout is in Eterna City. To there, I must be off!

See you next update! Now, I happened to record this on a Friday, the day when the balloon Pokemon appears. But it's not here! That's because it's the next Friday after you beat Team Galactic! So we shall return at another time for it!

Route 205

So now we head off to Eterna City! Ugh, honey trees.

Ponyta are always nice to see, since they give off a lot of exp. Pop won't take too long to catch up.

I heard that really tough Pokemon appear in Eterna Forest. I need to be more prepared than this!

There's a bit more to this route than previous, but it's nothing too special, just a bunch of trainers. You might wonder why I keep mentioning stuff like this, but that's because later Sinnoh routes get pretty mental and is one of the main reasons why it's my favourite region.

You can find the same kinds of Pokemon in all sorts of places. There's no law saying a Hiker can't go searching off in the mountains!

Hmm, a Roselia is pretty dangerous since we don't have great ways to deal with Grass types. I'm sure it won't be a problem. 100 SpAtk is pretty scary this early, especially if it keeps boosting it! It'll be a while before you can evolve it with a Shiny Stone, but it has enough oomph behind it to keep it competitive with everything else, even if it's pretty slow. Definitely worth getting if Budew feels too slow to get going.

Thankfully all it did was use Growth, but if it had attacked at +3, oh boy! Swift is a nice general attack since Pop is special, but Water Gun with STAB has the same power, so it's only good if we don't want to miss, or when fighting another Water type.

I will never plant berries in my entire Pokecareer.

I know all sorts of things about Pokemon! Let's see... there are males and females, and some aren't either!

Well that took forever...

Eh, kinda worth coming down here, but we've got to go up and around.

We'll grab another Buizel along the way, we need to catch something on this route!

Camping with Pokemon! Do you have any idea how fun that is?

Aipom isn't particularly great since its best attack for a long time is Fury Swipes and takes a while to evolve, but Return will keep you going until then, but otherwise you might have to Tickle to victory.

From being lost in the mountains for so long, I became a Hiker...

Uh, you're welcome?

Pop took a beating so we'll skip over the last trainer to, heh, pop in here.

Since we need to see every Pokemon, for the first time since Gen 1, trainers have starters again! Gotta see 'em all! ...have I made that joke already?

Last gen Pokemon cries would play on occasion, but that doesn't happen in Gen 4.

That's it for this route, and while I would love to go through a forest, how about we just completely igno-

Oh. Fine.

Eterna Forest

Hikari, may I ask a big favor of you? I want to get through this forest, but I'm afraid of doing it alone. I've heard that there is a sinister group of people called Team Galactic about. I think there'd be safety in numbers. Please, may I go through with you?

Joining up with Barry wasn't a random thing, escort missions are an actual thing in these games! But watch out, if you go near any Bug types, Cheryl will be scared back to the entrance! Haha, just kidding, that would suck.

Since we've got two battlers and two Pokemon, we can now encounter two wild Pokemon at once! This can make finding something much easier, since now you roll twice at once.

Hmm, weird.

At least there's a few new Pokemon to find here, though we'll come back for a couple later. Cheryl's Chansey isn't too useful, but it can take hits, heal itself and help assist in finishing off foes with Egg Bomb. At least if you're faster, Chansey will attack the Pokemon you just attacked, making them pretty dependable.

The one problem with wild double battles is having to knock out a Pokemon before you can catch anything, since catching a Pokemon instantly ends the battle and brings up the nickname/Pokedex stuff. It's just how the games are coded. Oh yeah, Cheryl has a few words to say like Barry did.

It's startling to see two wild Pokemon appearing at the same time.

My Pokemon is an excellent healer. But attacking isn't its strong point.

Hikari, battling with you makes me feel elated. If I could predict what you're about to do, we would make a fierce combo!

And of course, we can fight trainers in multi battles, but only if you walk into their line of sight, you can still talk to them and battle them individually.

Alright, we've seen both cocoons, so what're they about? Well, they can only attack if you evolved them from Wurmple, but what you get is random, so it can be easier catching them here. They can learn Iron Defense from tutors and if you somehow keep Wurmple around for a while, it'll learn Bug Bite. Not too useful, but it's something. It also learns Snore through tutors! Okay, give them one level and move on.

Oh yeah, we're now in modern times so every Pokemon has their turn before new Pokemon are switched in. After a hell of a time doing double battles last gen in 4 different games, this is appreciated.

Anyway, Beautifly is a little easier to use this gen since it learns nothing but special moves and maybe a couple of them are actually good! It'll be stuck with Gust for a while and takes some time to learn Silver Wind, but it'll eventually learn Bug Buzz, which is pretty sweet! Uh, at level 41, not so sweet. Still, it gets some nice moves from TMs, like Psychic, Shadow Ball, Energy Ball, hell, even Roost, so its good to focus on its SpAtk, since it's literally the only good thing it's got.

Level 18 starters are a bit of a pain, but it's definitely worth it!

Becoming more worldly, Grotle isn't too interesting since nothing much happens until it evolves. The only good move it'll learn is Bite and the best physical Grass move it'll get for a while is Razor Leaf, but hey, at least it's not Bullet Seed. It can definitely put a dent into most things it comes across, but it'll start petering out towards the end. Still, you don't care about its Speed, so Curse up and watch the bodies hit the floor.

A much more interesting evolution that can occur before the first Gym. The new Fighting type and Mach Punch go a long way to make this monkey hurt, and it still has the stats to make Ember sting. An early Flame Wheel is also great, but again, that's it for quite a while, so hopefully it's worth it. It'll get some more utility later on with Thunderpunch and its TM list is just crazy, Fire Blast is always a good pick too, but it'll flatten out pretty quickly. Still, those stats are just perfect for single player.

The final of the three is simple like Grotle, but with an early Bubblebeam, packs more of an initial punch. Pluck and Grass Knot are surprising, yet really appreciated early TMs and of course it'll get laden down with the water HMs, but it can use Surf and Waterfall pretty effectively. It doesn't learn many other special moves otherwise, so you've got stuff like Brick Break and Shadow Claw otherwise, but likewise, it hasn't got many moves past Bubblebeam until it evolves.

This forest only really has one real path to go along, so it's hard to get lost.

I see you going down in defeat...

When a Trainer and a Pokemon bond as one, a wondrous power is born...

I cannot tell you at a glance which gender these Psychics are, it's very subtle differences in spritework.

Of course, these Abra have HP Fighting, but Chansey don't give two shits.

Oh finally something for Ground types.

The Old Chateau... there should be none alive in it... and yet there is a pervasive sense of a presence...

There still remain many mysteries yet to be solved in this strange world...

Walk around for two minutes for some bunnies, two come at once. You might think having a partner would get in the way of catching Pokemon, but Chansey doesn't do much, and later partners will either be equally ineffective, or be in an area with not much to catch, so it's whatever.

A standard Normal type with a few quirks about it. See that evolution by friendship thing? Little tricky considering it starts at ZERO base happiness, whereas most mons start at 70. It's going to take a while to actually evolve this, happiness evolutions suck. Still, it gets an early Frustration to offset this, but obviously it's going to get pretty weak pretty quickly, so you'll need to sub in Return eventually. Still, it's fast enough and hits hard, so it'll fine for a time, especially since it learns Jump Kick! But then it won't evolve. And keep not evolving and then its stats aren't so useful anymore. With how slow happiness actually increases, an extra 70 is pretty brutal and that's the main problem.

Klutz is a unique ability to the bunnies and gives it a chance to trip and drop its school books, skipping its turn. Okay, not really, it stops effects of held items from occurring. Thankfully it doesn't stop the Soothe Bell, or stuff like the Exp. Share or Amulet Coin, but everything else still applies, including berries and the Macho Brace, despite applying the Speed drop anyway. Obviously the best use is using Fling while holding a Flame Orb, or something, but you can also learn Switcheroo and screw an opponent out of their item. It also can't use Natural Gift and gets no benefit from Pluck or Bug Bite. The more you know.

Despite having no difference between the Burmy forms, uh, I still made these. Burmy changes between these automatically depending on what situation you're sending it out in. It's still a bad Pokemon, but maybe it'll become more interesting when it evolves. That's definitely the case, but interesting does not necessarily mean better.

At least Platinum is showing these off, you only ever saw Plant in DP.

Dustox has the same bag of tricks Beautifly has, learning moves at a similar clip, but since its SpDef focused instead of SpAtk, it can't really make use of anything. Bit depressing, but it gets Light Screen, Toxic, Moonlight, Protect and U-turn to be annoying. That's really about it, since it can't make use of many moves with equal, awful, offenses.

Neat.

We're about halfway through the forest, so let's see what this Pure Power can do!

Yeah sounds about right.

The Old Chateau... I sense... a particularly strong presence there.

Forests are mystifying... they seem to gather such unexplainable energy.

Shards are much more common in Pt, but that's because we need lots of them!

But that's the end of the forest and where we part ways with Cheryl, but lets use her double battle powers a bit longer, there's still some Pokemon to catch!

Gastly is pretty rare, but at least Chansey can't take it down. It's pretty rough using one since its best attack until evolution is Lick. But with Hypnosis, Curse and Night Shade, it's not all bad. Shadow Ball and even Dark Pulse are through level up, but they're a while away yet.

Running out of Pokeballs here, but there's only one mon left.

Sure, I know what my Wurmple will evolve into by ~hacking~, but I also don't care that much, so we'll grab this.

I would've never been able to get through this by myself. Thank you so much, Hikari! This is a token of my appreciation. Please accept it!

Hmm, maybe we will. You didn't get the Soothe Bell here in DP, that's quite a bit later. But it's very helpful now, increasing happiness gains by 50% AFTER being boosted by the Luxury Ball and met location bonus (though that's not in this gen).

Let's immediately put that to use with Radium and his new Return!

Route 205

Huh, there's more to Route 205, so let's beat up some fish! The first guy only talked about his rod.

Size is in this game, but I have 1 karp, I don't need more. Goldeen only learns one physical Water move in Waterfall, but that's all it needs... when it eventually learns it before the far off HM. Until then you'll use Peck and Horn Attack. Maybe you'll learn Megahorn before the end of the game! Eh, unlikely.

Oh no...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO- Well it didn't take too long, I was just testing out Return's power. Definitely more than Tackle, but nothing too crazy yet.

Yank your fishing rod when that appears. That's how you fish.

My feet are tangled, too! Ouch! Ouch!

Ugh, honey trees.

But who cares, it's been a long journey, but we're finally at our destination!

If you spend enough time with them, all Pokemon will open up to you.

Pretty useful app to save you having to go to the Friendship Checker, which is still in this game. Your Pokemon wander around on the bottom screen and if you touch the screen they'll head towards it and the stages of hearts tell you how happy they are. If they're low in happiness, then they move away from where you're touching. No hearts is between 70 and 149 (any lower they move away), one small heart is 150-199, two small hearts is 200-254 and two large hearts is max happiness. So Return is at least 60BP and will only get better from there!

You need only use it, and you will be down in the tunnels! The Underground is a different world where you can do this, that, and the other thing, too! Let me mentor you into becoming a full-fledged spelunker!

Sounds like a lot of work, I'm trying to do a casual LP, you know?

"the underground tunnels..."

But I can't force you to accept my proposal if you're not inclined. Sigh... I get so lonely sometimes...

Pull the other leg, mate, this is one of the most crowded rooms in the game! Ugh, fine.

Going underground is quite easy. Simply use your Explorer Kit. If you accomplish that, I will give you your next test.

We'll go to the Underground later, there's A LOT to do and will be an update in itself, the things I need to talk about just pile up and up. It is very important to go there, however, but not essential. But who cares, let's get a bike, we got one no problem the last two times!

See, this is why those guys are evil.

Still can't buy Great Balls, but Nest Balls are a nice addition. They're identical from Gen 3, where they have increased catch rate on Pokemon lower than level 39, ranging from 1.1x at that level, to x3.9 if they're level 2. So pretty good, but their use is pretty slim, since Dusk Balls and Quick Balls are much better, but that's not fair to them.

This is the earliest we can change nicknames, but I can rename stuff whenever, so he's not needed, sorry!

...oh yeah, that Buizel we caught earlier.

This is a nice surprise, we'll go over held items eventually, but a bunch of new berries that weaken a super effective attack were added and they're pretty rare, but pretty nice. Wacan Berries halve the damage from a supereffective Electric attack.

Oh yeah, CHATOT can learn some human speech pretty quickly. Try out its move Chatter. You'll totally see what I mean.

Did that CHATOT I traded you totally learn that Chatter move? It will mimic your speech if you use that move outside of battle. It'll forget any speech you taught it if you stick in a PC Box, though.

An early bird is always nice, since in DP, this one isn't available until after Gym SEVEN otherwise, whereas it's a bit earlier in Pt. But in any case it's a nice pick this early considering what's coming up, though you'll have to rely on aforementioned Chatter for any real special attacks, since Uproar is a while way, through level up or tutor. It definitely does the job, but is pretty drat frail and has one move to really fall back on. It'll get better eventually with Hyper Voice and Heat Wave, but it's a long and painful journey to that point.

An aside, Tangled Feet reduces the accuracy of all moves used against this Pokemon if it's confused. Pretty bad, since confusion is pretty bad. As another aside, Chatot has all its Contest condition set to 20 for whatever reason, with its IVs being 15/20/15/25/15/25. I'll talk about Chatter in the Mini Notes, it's a trip.

...okay?

It's not anything that I have much use for these days. I do hope you'll put it to good use, young Trainer.

Young people like you have only the future to look forward to.

Shut the gently caress up, boomer, because of you and your garbage generation, my future is looking forward to wondering if I should have kids because I don't know what world they'll grow up in. Is my little sister's generation going to be okay? What about my newly born nephew and niece? gently caress off and die right now, you old pieces of poo poo.

Oh right, Recycle is something we, as a species need to do more of, or we'll die, choking on plastic in dried up oceans. It's also a Pokemon move that recovers your held item, which is remembered for the entirety of battle, but not if gave it to someone, or taken by Knock Off. It's still fine to Recycle something from Bug Bite, Fling, Natural Gift and Pluck. Also, it's a Gen 3 move, but only learned by Porygon and Mr. Mime.

Hmm, weird house. Well, whatever, I've cooled down now. Until the next piece of poo poo old person talks to me.

My last challenger was this awfully speedy young guy. ...actually, his name was Barry. He told me about you. He said that another challenger's on the way, so that made me antsy! At my Gym, no one gets to battle with the Gym Leader, me, until the end. The challenger has to beat all the other Gym Trainers first. I'll be waiting for you in the back, Trainer. Don't disappoint me!

There's a point, I wonder where Barry is?

Mini Notes 01: Chatter

Why the heck is there one of these devoted to a single move. Well sit back and find out. By itself, Chatter seems standard, a 60BP special Flying move with 20PP and 100% accuracy, with a chance of confusion. What is the chance? Well it's not that simple.

The standard cry of Chatot gives Chatter a 1% chance of confusion, but if you use it out of battle, you're able to use the DS's microphone and record a short clip to use as its cry. What do you mean it's shouting swear words over Wi-Fi? Who could have possibly seen this coming???

More specifically, the louder the volume of the clip, the higher the confusion chance. How this is all converted is as so: The recording is stored as a 1000-byte structure within the game as a 4-bit PCM (pulse-code modulation) recording. When a sound is recorded, 1984 8-bit samples of microphone input are taken at roughly 2000 samples per second. 16 zero bytes are appended onto the end of this recording to create a 2000 byte 8-bit PCM recording, which is then downsized to a 4-bit PCM recording via a translation table:

From there, the first sample takes up the lower four bits and the second sample takes up the upper four bits. The value of the 16th byte of the 4-bit recording, which translates to the 31st and 32nd sample in the original recording, the chance of confusion is:

As, uh, as easy as that. Since the chance is taken from the start of the recording, you don't need to maintain the same volume throughout, but it's still not a crazy chance regardless. It's unaffected by Serene Grace, but is negated by Shield Dust. And now you know how it works, ain't that grand?

Honestly, a lot of these early mons are really designed to catch and then box until later in the game when you can hurriedly pile a bunch of levels on very quickly. They're viable at low levels, because it's Pokemon single player and almost everything is useable, but they're not fun.

In much the same way as I raised Pichu to Raichu-A in Gen 7 by going back around half way through the game to get one when I had the tools to carry it and max its happiness very quickly, rather than trying to actually use the stupid thing.

As for Chatot..I love that little hateful bird. I used one while doing some post game stuff in XY and ruined my friends with one. "Oh gently caress not the hate bird again" good times :allears:

Some fun Chatter quirks:
-Chatter can't be sketched
-If you record audio, it will replace Chatot's cry (this is probably why it can't be sketched)
-Despite having a microphone, Gen 6 (& 7) have removed the ability to record audio so they changed it to a 65 power 100% chance of confusion.

Will you have a mini update covering how Pokemon Adventures handles this part of the story? Cause hot drat I think it's my favourite one and I didn't even play the games at release. They took a LOT of creative liberties with it, even more then usual, and this is coming hot off the heels of the batshit bonkres Emerald arc. They do justice to all the antagonists, the Galactic Admins and Cyrus are great, as are actually all characters. Even Mr. Footprint who may have as much time in the spotlight there as Cynthia :v:

Plus team Galactic escaping from the Windworks includes the grunt cutting off the wind turbine from the ground and using it as a makeshift helicopter and if that isn't the tightest poo poo then get out of my face.

If Onmi's around, then sure, the DP arc is definitely my favourite, probably because it's the last arc that isn't really rushed in anyway, or haunted by the spectre of a delayed B2W2.

I have never actually finished the DPP arc in Adventures because the scans of it online are awful after like the 5th chapter I think.

Oh hey glad I was keeping track of the LP announcement thread.

I don't think you mentioned the Drifblim at the Valley Windworks! It's one of my favorite things, even though it's a timed event. Very cute and good pokemon.

Yeah, that was my issue with it as well. However it's well worth it. Even if the different translators mean you get REALLY varying quality on one of the main gimmicks in this arc.

I'm glad to see Pop getting caught up quickly--I basically flipped a coin between Buizel and Shellos for my run and Shellos came out on top.

This is almost like getting to use both.

I have no complaints about how my slimy boy performed for the course of the game, though. The stats were never there, but he had all the coverage I could ever have wanted.

The DP arc is probably my favorite of the special arcs. It felt most cohesive and didn't feel like it went as off the rails in a way that bugged me like every other arc did.

The Platinum arc I don't have as kind words for

Well in that case let's talk about how our player character fared.

Dawn

May is out and Dawn is in. Generally more well received than May was, Dawn is cheery, hard working & determined. She kind of reminds me of a girl rookie Ash in some cases. I mean with that description she's basically your standard shoenen protagonist but with more girly mannerisms.
In fact the first episode is entirely about her. Ash doesn’t get seen at all until the last minute and they don’t meet until the third. Honestly she probably could’ve been the star of the season with no Ash and I wonder if there was a point where they considered it.

Some highlights from her first 20 minutes:
-So excited about her journey she almost misses the appointment
-Extended fantasy sequence about which starter she’ll pick for contests
-Rushing out to find some escape Pokemon from a lab accident
-Extensive rescue sequence running away & saving Piplup from Ariados including action leaps, explosions and
-On the fly battle planning to escape from Ariados
-Meets Mesprit on the lake just like Ash saw Ho-Oh and Suicune

She also trains her Pokemon about as often as Ash does, constantly experimenting with different combinations, appeals, poffins and general movements and these find use outside of battle either by her or Ash in his battles. It doesn’t sound like a lot but she really is more active than Ash’s other traveling companions. She even does a gym battle! The DP arc is one of the longer in the anime's life time and unlike Johto it doesn't feel like an eternity and a lot of that is because of how active and importantly it treats Dawn.

I think her most distinctive moment in the series is the episode where she captures a Pachirisu.

She’s absolutely smitten with it because it’s adorable and would be a great addition for contests but after capturing it she finds it nearly impossible to control. It’s so hyperactive, hard to handle and rarely obeys to the point that Dawn regrets capturing it and makes the hard decision to...release it.

Ash has released plenty of Pokemon in his time, but it’s been more for beneficial reasons (protecting the forest, learning to excel at something, hutning down sentient malignant roots destroying the region) so this is kind of unprecedented and both Ash & Brock get on her about giving up so soon and being a trainer and so on. Now she does get it back by the end of the episode and it doesn’t reallly come up again but you can trace how she acts to her other Pokemon’s behavioral problems to what she learned in this episode. It’s more shocking they did a plotline like that at all.

But you can’t talk about Dawn without talking about Contests

Her mother was a big contest star (something also from the games) and has always looked up to her and wants to follow in her footsteps. Her first episode has a few gags about over preparing for being a contest rather than going on a full journey with her Pokemon. This isn’t like May who didn’t like Pokemon to begin with and just stumbled into it as an excuse to travel the world, THEN find she likes Contests, Dawn has been ready since Day -1.

And on the whole, it shows. She’s very proactive about learning from her mistakes, trying out new things and in general all of her victories feel more earned than May’s did because you see her trying way harder. It also helps that the writers have gotten better about contest drama & appeals, so even with an overreliance on ICE FREEZES WATER it’s nicer to watch.

It also helps that Dawn loses. May wins almost every contest she enters, Dawn winds up losing several times to the point where she has a mini-arc where she starts passing on contests because she’s depressed about if she’ll ever get another ribbon & if it was even worth going on this journey. Amazing what not being invincible does for making you like & root for a character.

At the end of the series, she decides to stay in Sinnoh because her Buneary got a modeling gig. In a follow up special episode (that never got released outside Japan…) she decides to travel to Hoenn which we get no follow up on despite Dawn coming back for a small arc in Best Wishes Season 2 for some cameos and ratings boosts. Then she heads off to Johto and hasn’t made much more than cameos since then.

Super Contests

But hey let’s talk about the contests themselves real quick! Since having them all in one city would make for a non existent story arc, they just spread them all around the region like RS did and have a Pokemon League stand in with the Grand Festival. Dawn loses that, by the way, but by this point she takes it in stride.
As for any other changes they just took the aesthetics. There’s no dancing round and the dress up portion is just rolled into characters dressing their Pokemon before hand as part of their full attack appeal. Otherwise it’s just like the contests last series: a round with one (or 2) Pokemon doing a fancy move appeal interacting with the trainer followed by a battle round where the focus is on showing off the Pokemon rather than winning.

The PokeBall seals mechanic is also used here where you’d think they would have been in the first place. All competitors put their Pokeballs in seal balls to help accent their appeals.

Otherwise the only other difference is now everyone dresses up like they do in the games. Did someone ask for an impromptu FASHION SHOW?!

Dawn’s first outfit, a lovely pink dress. Many of her other dresses would be slight variations on this until the Grand Festival.

Her main rival, Zoey, prefers fashionable suits. This one is her third variation.

Another rival and long time friend, Kenny prefers to look like a maestro. This one is from the Grand Festival.

Jessie’s contest alter-ego Jessilina goes for whatever this outfit is, with some color variations.

Ursula is the jerk rival and dresses like a low key fancier Dawn. Loves frills.

Ash participates for fun a couple times and I like his “fashionable cowboy” look a lot.

Also this happened

Always nice to see, I'll add it to the OP, of course.

Between both Misty and May, it was nice to get a nice mix of kind, but determined we got with Dawn. Helped balance out Brock, who was absolutely 5 years past being interesting, though I don't want to imagine an anime without Croagunk.

Part 6: Big Bosses

Barry Encounter

You came to see the Pokemon statue, right? I'll take you there!

Shaping our world are time and space in an intertwining spiral. Revered in Sinnoh are the Pokemon of time and space... Sinnoh's myth... its truth needs investigation...

I wonder who that guy is. Don't think we've seen him before.

An easy way to become a great Trainer! Yeah, that! All right. Listen close... make certain all your attacks hit! Avoid enemy attacks for sure! You do that, you'd never lose! You'd be the invincible Trainer! Anyway, go check out the Pokemon statue. See you around!

That's some XCOM logic, but the theory is sound. So let's finish exploring Eterna, there's still quite a bit to do!

"When the universe was created, its shards became this Plate."

Ooh, mysterious. There's a bunch of these type plates around, some hidden, some not. We'll be sure to pick them all up, they boost the move of the same type by 20%! You might think that makes it better than the standard type boosting items we've had since Gen 2, but they've also been boosted to that, so use whichever one you like.

Pah, lame, modern heritage sites strip away all the fun of visiting old stuff.

Route 211 Day

The house nearby sells herbal medicine, we all know how much I love Revival Herbs, but it'll be a while before we get some, always nice to have them readily available early. And with that, it's new route time! Let's catch some thingymahoosits.

Alright, phew, another garbage baby I don't need to breed. Uh, ever wanted to use Chimecho in a slightly less painful way than a 2% encounter? Well, this is a happiness evolution, so not really? In any case, Chingling is perfectly usable, though its small movepool is a bit of a pain, only really being able to use Confusion, Uproar and Grass Knot for quite a time. As a baby, it only offers Last Resort to its evolution, which isn't great at all, so best evolve it fast, it won't be very useful otherwise. Hey, at least we just got the Soothe Bell!

Another familiar face. Now that Psychic can be physical, Meditite can make much better use of Pure Power, though losing Shadow Ball definitely hurts. Admittedly though, its only move to use for a while is Confusion, but then it gets Force Palm and, yes, Hi Jump Kick quickly after. Very useful, but that Return TM would be real helpful right now, shame you only get one for a while, huh? But at least there's, urp, Rock Tomb, sorry, my gag reflex is back, and the elemental punches a little later on. It's a fun time with proper planning!

Gah! Seems the little shits are still doing this...

Sowing confusion among the foe is one way a ninja battles. A Pokemon can't overcome its confusion unless it switches out.

Radium is always there to help me get out of Zubat bullshit.

Hikers are always welcome sights.

It's 7pm, so evening is nearly over. While it's not too smooth, there's much better gradual time changes compared to Gen 2.

Hoothoot is definitely a choice, since it gets early Uproar and Confusion and later on gets Air Slash. I used one just fine in HGSS and it can become a real SpDef monster. Add in Shadow Ball and, uh, Silver Wind, and you'll be fine. Just stay away from Rock moves.

Yup, I taught it how to say HECK! But my mom didn't find it very funny and took my DS away for a day...

Ugh, well, best to get this out of the way early. It's time for our first out of many, many times we'll be going into Mt. Coronet. Seriously, there's like 15 different areas in this place.

Mt. Coronet

Well, we can't go too far, but that doesn't mean there's nothing here for us!

If you want to make the next Gym a breeze and just sit there taking attacks, then this will do the job. You won't do very much back with those awful offenses, even with Extrasensory. But with Hypnosis, Iron Defense and Confuse Ray, you and your opponent will both want to die. Don't think about getting any real offenses until you evolve and get Gyro Ball though.

Heatproof creates the best mindgames, halving the damage from Fire moves and Burn damage, removing a weakness. Obviously you'll want to go with the immunity, but no one in their right mind would use a Ground move on a Bronzong, so you can surprise them when they try to hit you with Fire and then... uh... whittle them down and try not to die from more Fire attacks? Don't look at me, I dunno what I'm doing!

What is with all these adorable lost childs roaming around? As another happiness evolution, you'll be stuck spamming Magical Leaf until it finally evolves. Wait until later if you want Clefairy.

Since the last Pokemon is taking its time to show up, ain't low encounter rates just grand, it's time to ~HACK~ since I've gotta encounter every Pokemon somehow. Just type in the National Pokedex number... the level I want it to be at... don't really care about the nature... alright! That should do it.

...hm. Guess not. I've got to type these numbers in quite quickly and confirm with L then R.

...hm. Guess I need to learn my National Dex numbers. Bah.

There we go, uh, as simple as that! It's also the first Pokemon we're catching as part of the Platinum Pokedex Expansion! They just lazily stick like 60 Pokemon after the original DP dex, instead of mixing things in more naturally. Now we've got a load of holes in our dex, yay!

Also, since I shifted time somewhat to make it night so Cleffa appeared, we can now catch Hoothoot. It's been available since Eterna Forest, but the Honey trees, man! Also we were going back to the forest later when it would've naturally been night anyway, so might as well do it now.

Eterna City Night

Is it a Pokedex? Wow, it brings back some memories. Pardon me, but what's your name? ... OK, hello, Hikari. I'll be sure to remember that name! My name is Cynthia. I'm a Trainer just like you. I've been studying Pokemon mythology lately, just out of curiosity. Here in Eterna City, there is a statue of an ancient Pokemon. Have you seen it already? According to myth, it was an extremely powerful Pokemon. Who knows? You may encounter something like it while you're traveling with your Pokedex. Oh, I know! Try using this. It should be helpful.

It will let you go places that were previously inaccessible to you. That's important for filling up your Pokedex, right? Then luck be with you, young Trainer! Oh, there's one last thing! Please give my regards to Prof. Rowan.

She seemed important, but I doubt we'll see her much. Just before we head to the Gym, since this honey tree is close by and ready to go, might as well check it out.

This is important, since while the Pokemon is determined when you slather the tree, thus making you unable to change it without reloading and waiting another 6 hours, the actual PID hasn't been set, so you can keep resetting for gender, nature, IVs, etc. Very important for some Pokemon, but again, we'll go into this much more when we see what's in the other trees. Ugh.

Eh, sure, Aipom unfortunately only gets Scratch until it gets Double Hit way down the line to finally evolve. Return is appreciated. It gets a wide variety of TMs, of course, and the elemental punches later on are always nice, but it's a bit fragile for how long you've got to cart it around.

Slathering the tree again has a 90% chance of the same group appearing on the tree in 6 hours time. IF it was also the last tree slathered with Honey. Yeah, that immediately makes that mechanic useless. Is this a Munchlax tree? Honestly, there's no way to tell until you find one, it's pretty lovely. Now enough depressing talk, it's Gym time!

Pokemon Gym

The Gym Leader, Gardenia, is a user of Grass-type Pokemon. It should be obvious, but Grass-type Pokemon really hate fire. They're also at a huge disadvantage against the Flying type, too. Oh, wait a second. I should tell you about the Gym itself first. You can't challenge the Gym Leader until you beat all the Gym's Trainers. It's a bit challenging, but just think of it as good training and go for it!

Most Gyms stay the same, while others, like this one, got a huge overhaul. We'll see what it entails as soon as we switch Pop in.

Hmm, yeah, nah, don't expect to see him much for this bit.

Spin the clock round and round, where it stops nobody kno-

Oh, the next trainer. Figures.

Every time you beat a Trainer, the floral clock moves. The fountain also stops if I lose. It's so you can go to the Pokemon Center during your challenge.

That is definitely what happened, yes.

That's a lot of Budew and Roselia.

Quick stop at the center and then it's time!

When I first saw you, I was convinced you'd find your way to me. My hunch was right on the money. You have a winning aura about you. So, anyway, this will be fun. Let's have our battle!

Gym Leader Battle

Gardenia/Natane: Master of Vivid Plant Pokemon
From gardenia, a genus of flowering coffee plants, and ナタネ Natane, rapeseed plant, as well as 菜 na (vegetables) and 種 tane (seed).

Gardenia is a pretty tough fight, especially in Platinum when she's given a few buffs. At least Roserade is unchanged, it did NOT need anything else.

Turtwig is a pain being the setup mon for everyone else, but since we're chipping away at it, that Reflect should fade shortly after we beat it. And best for her to use healing items early.

That was probably another Reflect, so at least my plan worked! No, really, flinching endlessly and having the sun up was exactly what I wanted.

Praise the sun!

An interesting Pokemon if nothing else, with an early Sunny Day and Petal Dance, you can definitely do some damage since you'll activate your ability and transform, right? Well, let's go over it in a moment, but Cherrim is perfectly fine as is, it only has Grass special attacks aside from Hidden Power, which is a bit annoying, but it'll get Weather Ball as an egg move in HGSS! Yeah that's not great, but it has the stats to do damage and do damage early, it's pretty nice. While its physical Normal moves might not have much kick to them, well, maybe we can do something about that...

Under the sun, Flower Gift activates and Cherrim transforms into... exactly the same mon, more or less, but here's some good news, its ability boosts Atk and SpDef for it and its allies by 50%! Yes, Attack. So, uh, now Razor Leaf has a real kick to it and you can almost pretend you're part Normal with how much damage you're doing! A Heat Rock is the only way to make this strategy effective, but it gives it a weird little option that somehow works... kinda. Cherrim's form is not tied to Flower Gift, so if it's suppressed or changed in some way, it'll keep on shining and really, that's the most we can ask for it.

Anyway, I wanted to have the sun up when Cherrim came out cause I don't think I would've shown off its form otherwise, so be grateful! But we're just getting Pop his exp, can't miss out on that and really start cooking.

So you may have been wondering how the hell I'm going to get through the Grass Gym with a Grass, Water and Electic type. The answer is... Curse and then plink away with Tackle and Razor Leaf! That's seriously it, but when all you have is a Curse hammer...

Ah crap, I was using Razor Leaf to try and crit and guess what the AI thought was a good switch-in?

Well here we are, a loving problem. Still, having tough bosses by facing early evolved Pokemon is still working wonders, Roserade is real dangerous, but an excellent upgrade to Roselia. You can either evolve it as soon as you get the stone, which is a while away, or when Roselia learns Petal Dance at 40. Still, with stats like those, even Giga Drain is gonna hurt. You can also relearn Weather Ball, but it won't be too effective unless you weather it out with Cherrim. Still, once you get Sludge Bomb, it's all over, and Shadow Ball doesn't hurt either. It's definitely physically frail and takes massive damage from Prinplup's Pluck and Monferno's Flame Wheel, so Grotle users will have to get thinking.

This is taking a fair while, even at +2, but at least Grass Knot doesn't do a huge amount. Being paralysed is nice, since Etrian's Speed is completely tanked and this prevents Poison Sting from being annoying.

While Razor Leaf will do very little, Tackle crits are still the real business. It's out of healing and out of options, so we're done with this fight.

Oh, right, this thing is still alive... dammit, Pop won't get any exp since Cherrim switched out! Oh well.

Ah, darn, 1HP. Still, Pop will outspeed and finish the job, nice work Etrian-

-you absolute loving MAD LAD!

Bye, Curse, I prefer my coverage.

Pokemon Gym

Wasn't it hard for you to raise your Pokemon to be so good? I guess that's a measure of how much you love your Pokemon. In recognition of that, I proudly grant you this!

"of battle."

Now that you have two Gym Badges, all Pokemon you received in trades will obey you up to Lv. 30. I've also got something else. It's a gift from me!

It's one of my favorite moves. The heavier the foe, the more damage this move will cause.

You and your Pokemon are gonna get even tougher, and I mean seriously!

There we go, a nice, clean badge I got through a clever strategy I'm pretty happy worked out. Grass Knot has 20PP and 100% accuracy that deals a varying base power depending on how heavy the opponent is in kg, from 20BP at 10kg or less, to up to 120BP for 200+kg. Early on it obviously won't do much, but as your foes get bigger and heavier, it's a pretty dependable move.

Alright, now to teach Cut to remove these bushes and... poo poo! I could've taught Cut before the Gym battle and made it ten times easier, I am such a loving moron!!!

Oh don't patronize me with some of the best special coverage some Pokemon used to get!!! It's now a physical move and those moves are a dime a dozen.

Galactic Eterna Building

I am, after all, an officer of the International Police. It is only natural that I be a master of disguise.

...are you loving kidding me? WHY DID YOU REMOVE YOUR DISGUISE???

I therefore think you will be OK, but I must warn you to be careful anyway. Also, a word of advice. This building, it has two stairs. One of them, a trap it must be. But the crooks of Team Galactic, they do not appear, how shall I say, smart. There should be an easy way to tell the stairs apart!

But I have no clue as to who they are or what it is they wish to do. The minions, they appear ignorant of the intentions of their boss.

Oh hey, Pop's back! You can already tell which stairway is right, but might as well indulge them. This was just a regular building in DP, and therefore much simpler to traverse.

Our astonishing undertaking is most certainly breathtaking. If you ever hope to see its glorious unveiling, then don't meddle with us!

This is also the first appearance of a female grunt. You know as much on the overworld cause they got a big booty.

Now these are images to take out of context.

Well, we'll go over it even if it didn't do anything. This is one of them slow, frail, mixed attackers, but it can get the job done. It won't be too great until it evolves quite a bit later, but with Revenge and Mud Bomb, it has an interesting spread. Its best Poison move is Poison Jab... after it evolves, but the elemental punches are always nice and it's got quite a few picks from TMs. But since none of its stats are too great, it'll be barely reaching to be effective by the time it can evolve. Its typing doesn't make many types friendly to it either, so expect it to go down quite a lot.

What do you have against taking Pokemon from others? Look in any field or forest! Those things aren't exactly rare!

Yeah, pretty obvious, but it's worth going up both.

Good news, it seems Glameow has dropped Fake Out for Faint Attack. Hopefully next is Hypnosis...

When I get promoted, I'll demand better stolen Pokemon.

Hopefully there's something good this way!

drat it!!!

You can catch Pokemon anywhere. What's so special about them? Trainers that lose theirs should quit whining and catch some more!

I hope these are the bad guys, or we're gonna be so embarrassed!

Evil scientists? Well, they're always evil, so we can't count it against them.

Neat.

One day you'll see what we are all about. It's wonder, compassion, splendor, humor, power, awe, and tragedy!

Ah finally, we're gonna need this.

Hmm, they seem pretty villainous, especially since they're reminding me of trade evolutions.

Oh, never mind then!

How silly of me to even ask. You want to free the Pokemon. Fine! I, Jupiter, will deal with you.

Galactic Commander Battle

Outta the way you, this isn't what we're here for.

Alright, let's see how we fare against this boss!

gently caress

Well, tank is half correct with great HP, but meh defenses. Another dangerous Pokemon to fight pretty early since that is a mean Attack... and a mean attack in Night Slash! Between that, Flamethrower, Poison Jab and, uh... Explosion? Hell yeah!... you've got a pretty solid mon that has alright defensive coverage. It doesn't do too much aside from that since half of those moves are special, but it'll do enough damage with them. Night Slash is the main deal anyway, so while it was a rough road getting up to this point, I'd say it's pretty worth it.

So what's my strategy against this mon? Well, whittle it down and hope it doesn't crit too much. A flawless strategy, I know, but it's what I got. Night Slash has 70BP, 15PP and 100% accuracy. Since I only have the one Revive, I won't really be able to PP stall this thing.

But hey, I keep my party full so those spares can die for me while I heal something up. Works pretty well if it only goes for Smokescreen!

Mars has collected energy from the Valley Windworks. We're pretty much finished here. I'll let you in on one little thing. Our boss is researching the myths of ancient Pokemon. With the power of mythical Pokemon, he will become the ruler of Sinnoh... I suggest you keep out of Team Galactic's affairs from now on. This is your last warning!

Eterna City Night

They said "CLEFAIRY came from space. Hand it over!" Their logic baffles me still. It's like they are from space. Anyway, they're gone now. Thank you very much! I can't thank you enough right now, but cruise by my Cycle Shop, OK?

Dammit, can't I cruise without interruptions???

I wanted you to have this Pokemon Egg. Will you accept it? Oh? You have six Pokemon with you already. I'll give you this Egg when you've made room for it. I'll be waiting right here.

Oh yeah, my reluctance to use the PC for saving lots of data will probably bite me here and there. But I was curious what would happen. I doubt you could leave Eterna and have Cynthia stand here FOREVER, but it would be pretty funny.

The Pokemon inside the Egg is happy, too. I'm sure of it! Keep that Egg with you in your party of Pokemon. A Pokemon will hatch from it while you are traveling. I would be happy to know that it will help fill another page of your Pokedex. See you again!

Hmm, I wonder what's inside? We'll see soon enough, I'm sure.

"Press the B Button to shift up or down." In third gear, you can't go all that fast, but it's easier to control. In fourth gear, it gets harder to steer and stop, but it's fast! Really!

A neat thing is being able to get on your bike from these racks, but in any case, there's still a fair few things to do around Eterna and we'll do that... not next time. Cause we're going Underground!
