Health insurance is such an incredible scam. You pay for the privilege of paying more. Also you have to spend a certain amount a year before it kicks in. Even then they only pay for some of it. Also they can just refuse to pay for something, sometimes after they said they would cover it. And you have to search around for a provider that accepts your specific plan.

If you have a serious or complicated condition then it literally becomes a full time job handling all the paper work from the dozens of different providers and calling the insurance company to beg them to cover stuff. Plus random scam artists will now be sending you fake medical bills and good luck telling which ones are real since debts get traded around between collectors constantly.

Your insurance company also gets to determine your treatment a lot of the time. Doctors have to factor in what an insurer will cover when treating you. If you have a recurring prescription like insulin then you may have to call your insurer every month to convince them you're still diabetic. If you start costing them too much money they'll use every bit of bureaucratic black magic to drop you. Hope you can afford a lawyer because that's your only recourse.

Actually it's just American health insurance that is a scam. In Aus I pay about $25 a month for optical, physio, ambulance cover and minor dental.

I can get a new pair of glasses each year and it costs me about $80. Physio they pay about 70% of the fee. Dental is pretty much free but only minor stuff like cleaning and fillings

The thing is, when you have socialised healthcare like the NHS in the UK that doesn't mean that there is no private healthcare. What it does mean is that private healthcare has to compete against the NHS and actually offer good value for money and have a big incentive to keep their prices down.

Preaching to the choir here, but it always blows my mind to think that the US spends as much taxpayer money per capita on its "bankrupt yourself with appendicitis" system as the UK does on the NHS.

And given how inflated US prices are, the NHS is getting a lot more bang for its buck quid.

Look, you guys don't understand, our healthcare system is AMAZING. We pay large amounts for health insurance because we get the best* and fastest** treatment. You guys with free healthcare get lovely doctors who make you wait months to get in for an appointment.

The NHS existing allows private healthcare to look better on paper too - if your routine private operation goes south somehow they'll send you in an ambulance to an NHS hospital because they don't maintain the facilities to deal with a crisis situation, so the expensive life-saving procedures and/or deaths mostly end up on the NHS's record instead unless the private hospital fucks up so bad you die on the table :capitalism:

Wrong.

To be fair the UK really should be spending more than that. Not as much as the US but like, I got friends in the UK who outright cannot access healthcare they need because the NHS is so overloaded they've been flat-out told that if it's not an acute / emergency condition they shouldn't bother coming in and seeing a doctor. And that's not even getting into the fact that they're trans, that's for like, basic poo poo.

The /total/ cost is double...the poster was pointing out that the government funded shares are about the same. The company I work for just signed up for a new insurance plan. The insurance rep who came to our work stressed two very important things

1. don't get sick.

2. if you do get sick, don't go to the doctor until AFTER your symptoms are gone, otherwise they might find something wrong.

The system works!

Speaking of school shooters... The teen who sacrificed his life to help stop the Colorado school shooting will be honored by hundreds of Jeeps

quote:

Castillo, the teen who was killed while trying to stop a gunman during the shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch last week, loved all things Jeep. He saved up his money to buy his own Jeep. So a local Jeep enthusiast group plans to honor him by escorting his family to the church in suburban Denver where the memorial service will be held.

The Colorado Jeep Girls put the word out on social media, and so far more than 800 "Jeepers" say they plan to take part in the special procession.

Good to know companies other than gun manufacturers are finally starting to recognize the revenue opportunities school shootings provide.

It owns that you have dental and vision covered by your health insurance.

Because obviously those are part of... your health... especially given the amount of body-wide diseases that can originate from lovely oral healthcare........ except in the USA where you have to buy coverage for those separately :)

Because it isn't just capitalism here, it's a particularly virulent form of hell capitalism.
