I literally just finished a quest (The Little Ala Mihgan questline) where the Ala Mihgans get angry because a girl gets raped and says they all watched me and laughed during it and it kiiinda came out of nowhere

The first dungeon has a lot of unfortunate implications given that Human Trafficking is the main money maker given for the pirates you’re fighting. It doesn’t help that some of the flavour text battle cries the trash mobs shout out includes “take the women alive,” and that there’s a slightly out of the way room that has a cage full of sad women huddled together sobbing. Most people don’t see that cage, but it’s definitely there! There’s the street fight with the merchant in Ul’dah shortly before Ifrit where the jerk merchant is accusing a young mother of stealing her groceries and that he’ll forgive her if she serves him and his men. Pretty obvious they don’t mean tea, but we beat him up to a nice song. I guess I’m not surprised that this one gets glosses over. The girl from Little Ala’mhigo all but says it. Literally, she comes crying to the leader of the town while you’re there and says everything but “and they raped me.” For this case I will say that in Stormblood there is a nice quest where you go back and escort settlers from Little Ala’mhigo back to their newly liberated country. This girl shows back up; she’s become a guard, and an excellent one at that, in honour of her friend that died in the 2.0 quest line. It was nice to see her come back and not have the rape be her only defining character trait, as I would expect such a character to wind up in most media. Personally I feel my expectations for how an MMO plot handles this subject is just bottomed out after WoW and all of its super uncomfortable dragon-rape crap.

I feel like it was a lot more of a problem in ARR and while Stormblood does bring up sexual violence it's mostly more appropriate? Like depicting it as another atrocity occupying colonial forces do seems fairly true to life and feels like an important thing to include to counter people agreeing with the Empire by reminding them of one of the many reasons imperialism is evil. Which people sadly had a hard time remembering.

Last year's Little Ladies' Day event also had an unexpectedly dark final quest about a young girl that was abducted and killed years ago, before the city officials hosted large, and guarded, public events for the holiday.

One of the 50-60 SAM quests is about saving a young woman about to be forced into becoming a sex slave for the Brass Blades. Stormblood also has Arenvald or whatever his name is, the Scion with the white face paint, who tells you he's half Ala Mhigan, half Garlean because a Garlean soldier raped his mother.
