Writing phonetic accents is almost always a terrible idea. Word choices and slang usage are often much better at establishing a regional voice than any attempt at an accent, which almost always comes off as either unreadable, exaggerated to racist levels or both.

Yeah, I increasingly feel that the problem with writing dialect phonetically is like - it automatically positions the reader as someone who speaks with a "neutral" accent. If you transcribed practically any accent phonetically, it would sound weird and stupid, but characters who speak in the dialect positioned by the author as neutral, acceptable, non-foreign (and usually middle class) get to have their speech written out in standard English. It gives the text a perspective by saying, "now, this is the accent we don't write out phonetically, because this is the good and normal accent".

Like, if you phonetically transcribed even newscaster-perfect American English, you'd get a bunch of glottal stops and softened t's, because those are features of the accent, but people only write Americans that way in old British children's books that want to portray them as strange foreigners. Same deal with British Received Pronunciation, where if you transcribe it phonetically "Thursday" becomes "Thuhsday" and "butter" becomes "buttah", but it's considered the top accent socially so that's almost never done. It's almost impossible to write phonetic dialect without inadvertently making a statement on which accents are low status enough to merit it, and which accents are high status enough to be transcribed non-phonetically.

The other issue is that, no matter how you spell it out, someone's going to sound it out differently than you wanted them to, especially if English isn't their first language.

I'm down to four: SMBC, Whomp, Scary go Round (I assume John will come back soon and draw more for it) and prequel (pls don't judge me).

A read a lot of webcomics, all through RSS, so I don't check any sites, I just have five to ten every morning to glance through. Some of these only update once a blue moon, but that's the advantage of distributed webcomic reading.

Atomic Robo, Awkward Zombie, Back, Badnix, Broodhollow, Daughter of the Lilies, Drive, Family Man, Girl Genius, Gunnerkrigg Court, The Last Halloween, Monster Pulse, Order of the Stick, Paradigm Shift, Paranatural, Poppy O'Possum, Power Nap, Sam and Fuzzy, Stonebreaker, Sword Interval, Trixie Slaughteraxe, Widdershins, Wilde Life

Plus some I'm probably forgetting because they haven't updated in a decade.

Is Prequel still updating? I dropped it during those multiple-year-long hiatuses, though I'd been feeling it had peaked with the guardian spirit bit anyway.

I have a list of 70 webcomics all in my bookmarks that I just check when I remember to.
Mostly I just go down the full list every other day or so. I don't keep up with any story-heavy daily comics so it works out.

Let's see... Favorites in bold.

Awkward Zombie, BACK, Bunny Meat, Deathbulge, Derelict (subscribed just in case it ever comes back!), Gunnerkrigg Court, Junior Scientist Power Hour, Kill Six Billion Demons, Mare Internum, Never Satisfied, O Human Star, Octopus Pie (currently re-running with commentary), Oglaf, Oh Joy Sex Toy, Our Super Adventure, KC Green's Pinocchio, Please Listen to Me, Rigsby WI, Scenes From A Multiverse, Shaderunners, String Theory, Strong Female Protagonist (comedy option), Sword Interval, The Flying Ship, The Last Halloween, Vattu, Whomp!, Widdershins.

Also subscribed to Elf & Warrior, but I'm about ready to unsub from that one as it's kind of going nowhere and I'm kind of sick of the Webtoons format.

Scurry is a very pretty comic about a colony of mice trying to scrape by after all the humans disappeared. On an anthropomorphisation scale from Watership Down to Redwall, it's closer to Watership Down. It's in its final arc right now.

Hmm, favorites in bold:

O Human Star, Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal, Kill Six Billion Demons, Unsounded, Stand Still Stay Silent, Perry Bible Fellowship, Dinosaur Comics, Bad Machinery/Bobbins, Order of the Stick, Girl Genius, Oglaf, Penny Arcade, PVPonline, Questionable Content, Strong Female Protagonist, Something Positive, XKCD, Gunnerkrigg Court, Manly Guys Doing Manly Things, Three Panel Soul, Existential Comics.

Some of these I could probably take off due to inactivity (MGDMT) or not actually liking them that much (PVP) but RSS feeds make em pretty easy to follow. I need to get around to adding Paranatural into my RSS reader.

If you go to the Erfworld thread you can read about the latest evolution of the site's merchandise and production weirdness, which has combined with its current trend towards being a wiki.

I'm still baffled by the decision to replace normal art in the comic with 3D models that get posed, and maybe traced over? Which has taken a ludicrous amount of effort to get up and running on their part and is going to look garbage compared to even pretty straightforward comics art. And they're selling 'virtual collectibles' of the models created for posing, to fund this project.

The cart is so far before the horse that the curvature of the erf is getting in between them.

QC takes me 2 seconds to read and it updates daily so unless it does something particularly egregious to offend me I’ll keep enjoying that trash the same way i hate read Dominic deegan and CAD before it killed everyone and rebooted (i don’t read it anymore). It’s a disease, I know, but if poo poo updates daily I’m in. The bi-weekly/weekly update stuff I generally catch once a month so I have more than a page to read at a time.
