Mechanical Ape posted:The update notes mention self-sufficient domes which provide their own water/O2. How do those work? Do they look different from regular domes, and do they have less interior space because of the life support buildings? It's a ploppable that comes with its own external O2 and water generators which means it takes up a larger footprint than a normal small dome. It also means you have limited space to build passages through. The external generators are separate entities and can be demolished/removed, switched off, hooked up to the rest of the network, etc. It's neat as a prefab but I am not sure how much use an advanced player will get out of it. Willie Tomg posted:Are there new any new mysteries in this expansion? None that I can tell, and nothing in the patch notes either. Just new event chains. I really want to like this but I keep bouncing off because I just cannot manage to repair breaks in cables. I have drones nearby (RC commander). I've put a metal storage nearby. Drones whether carrying metal (they carry 4 at a time) or not don't seem to have the option of interacting with the break. I've run it forward 5 sols and nothing has happened automatically. Any ideas?

Are the drones assigned to the RC commander, or are they operating from some other base that's too far from the cable break?

Mild irritation with the whole landscaping is that it's just a hologram until suddenly it blips into existence at completion. I understand why this is done that way it's just...kinda silly.

I impulse snapped up what I presume is an accidentally ludicrously discounted First Colony Edition.

Hah, it's only a little more expensive than the DLC itself. And looks like the First Colony edition is on 2game at ~17,50 euros which is even cheaper.

I've got a cement extractor with a big discard pile (empty) next to it, and a water extractor all over out of the way in a crater that requires driving all around it to reach it, with a small discard pile next to it (also empty); yet the droids keep getting the refuse from the cement factory and driving all the way to the water extractor's refuse pile. Why? Did I just get Dwarf Fortress into my Surviving Mars?

Expansion's worth it for the level terrain tool alone.

Being able to build a big rear end ramp instead of the tunnels owns really hard.

Remember, R and T can change the brush size of the terrain editing. Also the UI has been updated to have a waste-rock counter up top next to the seeds.

Clarence posted:I really want to like this but I keep bouncing off because I just cannot manage to repair breaks in cables. I think its a bug. I keep my oxygen and water storage behind a switch so if there's a leak in the network I can isolate my storage so its only connected to the dome. But if I do that now then the dome stops getting oxygen or water because it's not connected to a water/O2 producer. So they must have changed something about the code on that because it's definitely not supposed to work like that, I imagine the reason you can't repair the leak is because that cable isn't carrying any power. If you open the switch again it should let you repair.

I've been bouncing about, trying to decide what to play/get a good start/avoid loving up said good start and I like some of the events they added. Found a failed colony someone tried to set up in 1974 that gave me a choice from a bunch of goodies. Found another ruined drone on the start of another colony that gave me the choice of an early Tribolectric Scrubber or shuttle bay blueprint.

Probably a dumb question, but if I already own the game and Space race, can I buy the First Colony edition and have it fill in all the DLC blanks?

Well RIP my first green game, was unprepared and ignorant to how badly Wildfire can wreck you with its insanely high research cost and killing your colonists. Next time I'll make a quarantine dome I guess.

Wow, terraforming Mars is so slow and gradual but so awesome. Nice to see lichen slowly greenify around me, and the fact that more atmosphere and water means more performance from wind farms and vaporators is nice.

This expansion is definitely gonna whet my appetite for More Game, but I want this game to have a connected-colony Simcity 4 style map SO. BADLY.

I gotta say my colony is doing really well on a single ranch popping out ostrich meat. 150 food every 8 sols. Also it seems the indoor and outdoor ranches actually have different options. Indoor ranches tend to involve smaller, cuter, safer animals.

Alkydere posted:I gotta say my colony is doing really well on a single ranch popping out ostrich meat. 150 food every 8 sols. I tooled around in Cheat Mode (unlimited resources, other stuff like that) just to see the long-range benefits of terraforming and it's fairly significant. You need to put a lot of resource investment into it, but the end result is huge automated outdoor farms that drones harvest, vastly-improved output of moisture vaporators, more powerful wind generator output as you have more atmosphere, getting rid of pesky Mars Disasters like dust storms, meteor showers and cold waves (though if you *want* meteor showers you can send up a rocket to grab some for that random science/materials stuff raining down on you)... all pretty great. Moreso than the base game wonders it looks like terraforming is the "huge investment, huge payoff" for people who just want to max out the good stuff. The fact that the planet slowly but surely transforms visualy as you do it is a nice visual benefit as well.

I keep losing to Earthsick-spirals before I can even fill the first dome while trying to play through a Last Ark game and every time the spiral starts I rage quit. Then about 10 minutes later I try again. Besides making sure to start as the Church for the double birthrate instead of trying to force it while keeping Brazil's waste rock gold panning, is there anything I ought to be focusing on while starting that way? Should I make my 2nd dome a school dome so I'm not immediately hosed when my original specialists become old?

This is sort of a function of your birth rate as well, I think (more births = less relative dead senior weight) so I'm getting a bit of progress using Japan's -15 comfort needed for births and increased lifespan.

My church run with last ark was slow going at first, but I’m 50 sols in with a university up now and I’m already at a point where I want to turn off births until I can build more factories. The barrel dome is really good but man I wish it had a spire slot.

How interesting/viable/maddening is it to strip mine geologic formations to feed into Brazil's waste rock processing building with the new terrain mod system?
|
# ? May 18, 2019 15:52 |

The only downside to coming back to this game after Space Race / Green Planet / patches is that I have no idea what mod features got baked into the game or really how to play it now that there's all this extra stuff. I just unsubbed from all the mods I had previously so I guess I'll figure it out the old fashioned way.

zedprime posted:How interesting/viable/maddening is it to strip mine geologic formations to feed into Brazil's waste rock processing building with the new terrain mod system? Quite viable though one of the new terraforming buildings burns up waste rock to make atmosphere (somehow). You can also build ramps with a bulldozer that go right through those cliffs (that usually results in a lot of waste rock) so you don't even need to build Tunnels anymore if you don't want to (though you probably should still use them to get to distant valuable areas). The Dozer can work on its own and unlike all other rovers can be built anywhere by drones once you've got the tech. It can only move waste rock around and help in landscaping, but it's good. Landscaping ruins the "soil quality" of an area but don't worry about that because unless there's green stuff already growing there the soil quality is effectively zero. The "Terraforming Initiative" sponsor is pretty good if you want to jump right into the terraforming stuff, but it's also bereft of the nicer short-term benefits like Brazil's waste rock recycling and so on.

I might have to try Japan then. I'm still having trouble just getting the colonists to stay alive since I pull too far ahead from what my resources can support, but I think I at least get the service triangle you want to start with.

Wait, where does Japan get that!? Their sponsor card says: -Flying drones -Unmanned metal mine -Science bonus every time you scan a sector -Rovers cost only half the $$ and the weight to shove onto a rocket -All trained specialists get a flat +10 to their productivity at any job they do -Downside of less applicants. Are you sure you're not mistaking the infirmary's -15 comfort needed for birth for something Japan gets?
