5. Deep Blue Sea (every bit of 1999) It's not the best made shark movie, but it might be my favorite. Super intelligent sharks vs a good cast. It's a blast. Deepest, bluest, my hat is like a shark's fin. 3.5/5

10. Kuso (Shudder) Have you ever wondered what a film made by a horny David Lynch while he was smoking PCP with all 9 members of the Wu-Tang Clan including ODB’s ghost would look like? This is it! There is absolutely no point in doing a synopsis for Kuso. It is 90 minutes of stream of consciousness craziness with the finest of threads holding it together. This is the perfect movie to put on in the background of a Halloween party or to watch with a group of friends so you can create a chorus of WTFs and wise cracks. I feel like it’s the biggest compliment I can give to Flying Lotus to give this a rating of ???? out of 5.

13. The Happiness of the Katakuris The Katakuri family have moved in together to set up a roadside inn. But when their customers start dying, they are forced to hide bodies or deal with the consequences. Family comes first! All while singing songs and occasionally being Claymation-ed. A weird delightful joy from start to finish. I guess my only complaint is not enough bodies, and maybe not enough singing. The musical sections are really delightful, and it's a lot of fun to have them shift from horror to song. Honestly, any movie that syncs shoveling a grave with the music has pretty much already won me over. 5/5 Not really sure that I'm going to end May here but it's a great film to go out on.

11. The Red Queen Kills 7 Times A centuries old curse makes a woman murder her sister, who comes back from the dead to kill, seven times! Half of the movie is set in a gorgeous castle that the crew is clearly having fun filming in. The mystery is pretty good too but the ending is very Scooby Doo in a bad way and sort of ruins it. Still I'd say the cinematography alone makes this an above average giallo, for what it's worth. 12. Your Vice Is A Locked Room And Only I Have The Key A woman suspects her abusive husband of being a giallo murderer, but things develop in unexpected directions! I am happy to say that I ended up liking it a lot! I was not very into it for the first half of the movie and found it unusually bleak with all the spousal abuse and rape. On top of that a very generic giallo murderer, but then the murders are resolved 50 minutes in, police give the obigatory explanation for the murderer's motives, husband is exonerated, yet the movie goes on!. That's where I realized this was going to be something else, finally! But then a vey gorgeous and good black cat is viciously attacked by the previously sympathetic abused housewife (no spoiler tags for that), which made me really mad and almost give up on the movie. Eventually everyone in the movie has been shown to be completely despicable, at which point I got on board again. Then the ending, everyone gets what they deserve  Quite the emotional rollercoaster for me, going from boredom to anger to grim enjoyment to cheering for the one true hero of the movie, Satan the cat! 13. Death Smiles on a Murderer A mysterious amnesiac woman arrives at a nobleman's estate, and soon people start to die. Top notch movie title, movie itself is not all that bad either. Not quite a giallo due to the supernatural angle, very heavily influenced by E.A. Poe, even more so than Your Vice. Seems to forget what kind of movie it is occasionally and just turns into a dreamy historical romance, very meandering, and does not make much sense overall. Last act is quite strong. A very good and gorgeous Siamese cat really fucks up a dude, which is much appreciated. Nice theme music that I could swear I've heard somewhere else before. That concludes my challenge, but there are still a lot of giallos on Prime that I haven't seen so I'll go on.

6. The Blair Witch Project (1999): found footage as a genre is a mixed bag at best in my experience but this is good as hell. V spooky. The characters feel realistic and the decision to never show the witch is a good one. The early scenes of the film crew interviewing the locals do a good job of setting up the events in the woods and getting you into the headspace to be scared. Just a very effective movie.

8. Monster Party 2018, streaming on Shudder The premise is solid: Teen thieves accidentally try to rob what turns out to be a serial killer 12 step program meeting. This, and an ok cast, are wasted on a terrible script and amateurish filmmaking. The lighting is TERRIBLE and the set looks like it’s from Real Housewives. Friday the 13th, Part V: A New Beginning I actually genuinely enjoyed this. It's very oddly edited--the Roy reveal is done in like a second--and Manfredini's score is very big-band style, in a departure from the series' norms, but I liked the brutality. Tommy Jarvis is still such a nothingburger of a character, but I liked him getting his revenge on "Jason." Overall, this was one of my favorites of the series. Up next is Part VI, which is another one I've never seen. Watched: Friday the 13th, Friday the 13th Part II, Friday the 13th Part IV

9. Dead Birds dir. Alex Turner (2004) Watched this because i saw twitter user bakoon talk about it and I don't regret it! I dug the mix of period piece and horror, did not dig so much some very bad cg and how many shots have a weird amount of headroom (maybe that second part is Shudder/s fault?). I kept expecting to eventually something crawling on the ceiling in the background unoticed by the characters but it never made sense. Also left pretty underwhelmed by the ending. Felt weirdly rushed compared the meticulous slow buildup of the rest of the film. and finally... Blade: House of Chthon It's a two-part TV pilot for the ill-fated Blade TV series. Ironically, the show was cancelled while it was the #1 show on Spike TV... for having ratings that were too high among women. Apparently casting a woman as a badass femme fatale army sniper-turned-vampire double-agent was getting women to tune in to SpikeTV, so they cancelled the show. If I had to guess, I'd say what happened was they signed Stickyfingaz, who wanted to play Blade as a passion project, then got the greenlight from that, and on set discovered he couldn't act. So they focus the show around the big bad Marcus Van Sciver and Krista Starr since their interplay is far more interesting, and Blade can be in as little of the show as possible, and most of that is his stunt double. It's a drat good show, though - picks up right where the movie left off, Blade is already a badass and killing vampires, there's all the palace intrigue befitting a cool Vampire: The Masquerade campaign going on on the vampire side, while Blade runs from fight scene to fight scene. Stickyfingaz acquits himself well as the titular vampire assassin (although really it's his stunt double doing most of the heavy lifting) and a script/bible from David S. Goyer pretty much "gets" what Blade is - an utterly humorless murderbot surrounded by people who have goals and dreams, and find his nihilism either charming or shocking. Detroit looks good (although suspiciously like Vancouver) and the seeds are laid for a fairly entertaining action romp. It really is a shame this didn't get renewed, because Jill Wagner is basically Elektra if Elektra was interesting. And that's 15, folks!

14. The Blood Spattered Bride A gay vampire makes a newlywed bride hate her husband, refuse to have sex with him (gasp) and also murder men. Also a real fox is caught in a beartrap and subsequently shot to death in this movie. Not cool. Another adaptation of Carmilla (I watched The Vampire Lovers last Halloween), and this one not aged too well. I'm not sure vampirism is supposed to be a metaphor for homosexuality here because the vampire is explicitly lesbian anyways. I suppose this is how lesbians were thought to threaten masculinity and the authority of the husband? I'm also not quite sure if I'm not supposed to sympathize with the husband, who's really quite gross, or the bride, who's also very unlikeable. I wouldn't really recommend this movie since it does drag on quite a bit for most of its runtime. Once the jig about vampirism is up it finally gets going, and the movie ends with the husband shooting the everloving crap out of a coffin with the vampires in it, which totally works and kills them. I respect that.

7. Saw (2004): I liked this movie more than I expected to. The reputation of the Saw franchise is one of torture porn for its own sake, which is a turn off for me, but this is a fairly tight, well executed thriller. The acting is so-so (Elwes’s accent slips a few times) but I like the premise. The Danny Glover scenes were kind of whatever. Was cool to see Ben and Miles from Lost in this.

3) Contamination [rewatch] An absurd budget Italian horror/sci-fi. The exploding organs effect is fun every time. The sprawling story from New York to Colombia to Mars sort of makes sense once you buy in. The shower assassination is one of the most ridiculous things. OSHA warnings for the absolute trash hazmat suits without full face masks. C 4) The Fly (1958) I'm shocked how much I liked this. It's an extended flashback to solve a murder mystery everyone knows from cultural osmosis and Vincent Price isn't even the star. Almost none of it is surprising yet it all works. B 5) Shin Godzilla Godzilla has googly eyes and is made of jelly. The majority of the movie is meetings and press conferences. Somehow it's great and full of excitement. The final shot of Godzilla is incredible. A 6) Misery Cultural osmosis did not make the hobbling scene any less brutal. Kathy Bates is great and Caan is very good. One of the Letterboxd reviews mentioned how this isn't a claustrophobic movie despite the setting and rather than feeling confined you want to explore Annie's house. This is an interesting little world. B 7) Dead Mate aka Grave Robbers Murderous necrophiliacs! This one isn't great until the bonkers third act featuring a motorcycle and hearse chase. The credits song is a banger. C https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAwH6vKXXq8 8) The Mask (1961) A super thin story about a spooky tribal mask that functions as a 3D glasses gimmick. When a character puts on the mask you put on your glasses and get 5-10 minutes of trippy montage with skulls and demons. A deep roster of character actors for a goofy blob-like. The effects and kills are very good. There's one fireball next to a McDonald's and I have no idea how the permits or avoidance of police worked unless it was a miniature/forced perspective shot. The fake ads are a delight. 8. Ghost Stories (2017) Watched On: Hulu  My only real gripe is the movie seemed kinda dark at times but that could have been the settings on my screen. But otherwise Ghost Stories is a lot of fun. I was hooked as soon as the framing device had been established, a skeptic with not much time left recruits another to investigate three cases of the unexplained he could never solve himself to try and prove his life's work wasn't pointless. Despite my issues with the lighting this is a really pretty film with some gorgeous shots and very creepy/bleak atmosphere. A great film for a rainy or overcast day. I won't spoil anything outside of this since it's more fun going in blind for sure and it's probably worthy of repeat viewing to pick out details you might have missed.  15. Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh (1995) (digital) This isn't half as good as the original, but it's not completely worthless either. It takes the basic idea of the first film and turns it into a more standard gothic horror story, unfortunately losing much of what made the original unique and interesting. I enjoyed the first two acts of this film well enough - not great, but decent - but it stumbles hard towards the end. The additions to Candyman's origin story are dumb as hell, and making the whitest ladies ever be his descendants is even dumber. On the plus side, Tony Todd is excellent again and Philip Glass returns to do the music (although I think a lot of it is just recycled pieces from the first film. at least they're good ones!). There are some decent and gruesome effects as well. So, not a total waste of time, but not especially good either. If you're a fan of the original and especially of Tony Todd, you might get something out of this, but don't expect too much. Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives Okay, this loving rocked. It's incredibly tightly paced, being only an hour and a half long, it has some amazing kills, and it doesn't waste time pussyfooting around with a side story. I'm not going to go back and check, but I think this is the most screen time Jason has had in the series. Tommy Jarvis also finally feels like an actual character, instead of a cipher ... although his actor delivers some pretty bizarre line readings. The resurrected Jason is like a zombie pro wrestler. I kind of feel like this iteration of Jason is what the WWF used when developing the Kane character. All in all, I genuinely enjoyed this and it will be part of my October horror marathon. Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood I don't really know what to think about this. Tina being telekinetic is a very odd twist, and there's almost no Jason in the movie. There's also way too much mansplaining happening throughout the movie, but that's to be expected for the era, I suppose. The kills aren't really creative, either. I don't really know how to feel about this movie. I don't hate it, but I don't particularly like it, either. It's ... aggressively mediocre. 15. The Suspicious Death of A Minor https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwmR0EDQlk8 A minor is stabbed to death, which is suspicious to say the least. Police investigate. I'd describe this as an Argento giallo with a more straightforward police procedural plot, drugs, sex, shootouts, car chases, explosions. There's nothing outstanding about the movie, but it's great, lighthearted fun with an absolutely sick, Goblin-esque main theme. The best scenes of this movie could be straight out of Deep Red, when the music is blaring and the camera is following the killer you'd think it's Argento doing an action movie for a change. Definitely recommended.

Kane Hodder complained about how he was constantly covered in slime and freezing his rear end off during part 8. The director wanted Jason to look wet the whole movie cuz of drowning, so they kept rubbing him down with gelatin and soaking him, even though it was so cold you can see a bunch of characters' breaths.Ramadu posted:good news! now you can watch jason x, the best friday the 13th! 8. Chopping Mall (1986): this is the kind of movie I’d probably enjoy a lot more if I watched it with a group. It’s okay. The head explosion is good and I like the insanely 80s robot design. It feels very by the numbers though. Good to see Dick Miller show up.

I generally don't have much of a budget for films and poo poo (yay $10 sales) but I sure as gently caress paid full price for the Chopping Mall blu when I saw it on a random Best But excursion. Partially because I remember seeing it as a teen, and partially because the mall they did the exteriors on was one of my haunts and those goofy 80s escalators got removes in the 90s. Sucks that the ending is almost an afterthought, though.
