Jacopo is not a good person but they did a phenomenal job of showing that he was just that, a person. He was certainly not cartoonish and the narrative (especially in Requiem) plots his story in such a way that's possible to see how he would develop that way and how tragic it was that he was not able to see the signs of his failings or escape routes to get out of his situations.

The previous lord, however...

I mean I never played Requiem so maybe he was more interesting there but man was he a boring cartoon in the game proper.

The second villian was already a tad cartoonish but I at least understood what they were going for with him.

The only one I felt was grounded and realistic was Mell and man the game was harsh towards him.

Now up to the start of chapter 3 in Steins;Gate. It's been an absolute joy to read thus far. I teally like the way the characters interact with each other, it feels very natural and fun. Good humor too. Rintaro might be the best protagonist out of all the VNs I read, at least from a reader engagement perspective.

There aren't any particularly thought provoking moments or strong themes yet, but what is there is consistently good fun writing.

I would definitely recommend it.

I on the other hand have started chapter 7 of Chaos;Child and (edit: hah I wrote Chaos;Head originally) I'm finding the VN a chore. I don't like how the characters interact with each other and Takumi might be one of the most boilerplate VN protagonists I've had the displeasure of knowing in a while. I didn't expect S;G level quality but ugh.

Umineko had a slow start (I mean we can't be comparing the two works since Umineko is undeniably a masterpiece) but it got waaaay more interesting waaay faster.

Honestly I kinda preferred Chaos;Head compared to Chaos;Child up to this point in hours because I loved how batshit insane C;H was.

Yeah, I thought the first half was hard to get through, but once things finally kick off it might win you over. Pretty sure I went from Chapter 8 to the ending in one long day, after spending ages getting through the earlier chapters.

Now in mid-chapter 4 of Steins;Gate and wondering when Rintaro is finally going to catch on to the fact that he and/or his mind are the only ones traveling between wordlines. It's getting a little frustrating to see stuff like the IBN 5100 turn up missing in a particular wordline and have him reacting with "someone must have stolen it...no...it teleported!:eng101:"

I think Steins;Gate is usually pretty decent about addressing the most obvious things I'd be curious about/what to try regarding their time travel abilities in the story but I definitely got frustrated at a few points where I felt like I could puzzle out ways to test/confirm/convince cast members some aspects of it that they don't do for narrative convenience.

I think it might have been, start-to-finish, the best When They Cry chapter I've played. I loved Umineko, but I love that as a whole- Chapter 5 of Umineko is probably the best one, with Chapter 4 a close second, but this chapter was both a great addition to the story and a great self-contained plot in a way that most Umineko chapters weren't.

I really wish I had played these as they came out, because I can't imagine a bigger jaw-dropping moment than Keiichi remembering murdering Mion and Rena, breaking down, and having an astounded Rika realize that someone else remembers the time loops/alternate universes. I'm glad I waited up to now to play it, since MangaGamer has said that Higurashi Ch7 is out of beta, because I can't imagine waiting years for the next chapter.

also once again I got spoiled by a few things but some things I more or less know for sure now:

Teppi's body definitely got moved by Mion or her family after Keiichi killed him- Mion absolutely knew what the gently caress was up after his phone call and probably had him followed.

Miyo's death is definitely faked. I need to go back to confirm it, but since she's a nurse, it's possible the Irie Clinic's medical records were used to confirm the corpse, and she would have been in a position to fake those. She murdered Tomitake for whatever reason and used the body to disappear afterwards.

Also this is earlier, but I really wish my favorite bit in Chapter 3 had lasted longer - Sakoto and Keiichi, both clearly delusional/paranoid, on the run as the weirdest Bonnie and Clyde couple of all time

Yeah I think (checks notes) Tsumihoroboshi is the strongest chapter on a sentimental level. Of course Umineko has a lot of emotional content but it's kind of wrapped around a whole riddle wrapped in an enigma. But here it's just some people realizing how badly they hosed up and there's nothing else to think about.

I love Tsumi/Ch.6 a lot too because for all the apparent supernatural elements and gruesome murders throughout the story, much of the drama is just the very real breakdown and subsequent repair of the relationships that happen with a messy divorce. Like some of the child abuse elements, it feels real in a way that you wonder if Ryukishi07 either experienced something that himself or knew someone who did. I think Shion's story is compelling and certainly quite heavy/heartfelt, but it feels more "in universe" compared to something like Rena's past, if that makes sense.

He used to work in local government and said that his writing is informed by what he learned during that time in response to a question about the familial relationships depicted in his work, so it sounds like he's at least got second-hand experience on those topics.

It was affecting to the point where I honestly didn't care too much about the "real" ending where everyone dies the day afterwards. I mean, A) Keiichi's last line was more or less screaming at the universe that he was going to break out of the cycle, and B) Rena's whole bit in the chapter about enjoying the time you have in case the world ended tomorrow, which happened to be true in her case. Everything might get solved in another loop but for now everyone finishing the cycle leading to the disaster as friends was "enough", if that makes any sort of emotional sense.

Rika realizing that she shouldn't give up on her friends as she did with Rena earlier was an amazing moment too, that might be my favorite moment in the series so far, along with the detective and Ooishi having a heart-to-heart a few decades after the incident. Oh, and Rena's angry speech to a self-rightous Keiichi in Chapter 3 asking "Oh, ok, let's just solve everything by having Sakoto live in your house, why don't we?" was so well-written too.

Some more theories (Higurashi, I've been spoiled that the reason for the killings is fundamentally some kind of biological/neurological disorder )

I'm wondering who knows about the paranoia symptoms. I had assumed that Rena/Mion knew about it and that the syringe Keiichi saw in Ch1 was real (but was some kind of sedative/medication for the disease that they knew about), but apparently that's not the case. Rika clearly seems to know about it given that she had an "actual" syringe for curing it and I don't really think she's lying (it showed up in Ch2 and Ch4, IIRC). So who else knows about it? Irie?

Other than Shion who goes nuts at Mion's confession in Ch5 and presumably Ch2, Miyo is clearly the one "confirmed" murderer out there. Ch3 shows that her death was very likely faked and that she is almost certainly responsible for Tomitake's death. She's therefore the most likely suspect for Rika's death in Ch3 (not in Ch2/5 since Shion kills her), but I have no idea why. It almost has to be something to do with her obsession with the festival death incidents/the village history, though.

Also regarding the Sozonaki family: would I be wrong in saying it's basically a "Who will rid me of this meddlesome priest" thing where the family head more or less says something like "Boy wouldn't it be nice if x happened" and it sort of happens without them ever directly giving an order for it to happen?

For what it's worth IMO getting Chapter 7 released is a bigger deal than Chapter 8; Matsuribayashi/8 provides the actual resolution of course but it's Minagoroshi/7 that basically lays all the cards out on the table and hits the hardest.

You probably may not remember since it was all the way back in Chapter 1, but there's a scene where the kids jokingly draw on Tomitake's shirt with a marker. When Rena/Mion say something to the effect of "We'll do to you what we did for Tomitake", well, you can imagine what it was Keiichi was mistaking for a needle. :smith:

The entire game is sleazy. It's extremely early-to-mid-90s eroge. It's one of the oddest combinations of an interesting story written by a guy who is WAY too horny for his own good you'll ever see. The protagonist especially is written to be creepy, leering, and incredibly dumb. The game handles its "adult themes" with slight amounts of tact before abruptly turning toward the eroge creep zone. The non-pornographic console version that's coming out only makes this slightly less off-putting since they changed very little beyond removing the sex scenes.

If you have a tolerance for excessive anime creepiness, then there are some things about YU-NO that are interesting, but if you don't, you're going to want to stay away.

tbh I've read enough VNs at this point that I can see the devices they're using to sell Giselle (make her attractive, embarrassed about something she did that's not her fault, have some cosmetic problem that doesnt make her less attractive, feel a stranger to everyone but the main character, etc) and she's super likable obviously but its not something that sticks with me especially. maybe i should take a break for a while idk. I thought Morgana was a more memorable character, and I liked her disappointment at how she thought the guy she liked kept coming back as a submissive girl. And how she only ever offers michael her bony skeleton hand to hold.

also - was there really not a word for "albino" in any of those time periods???? Somehow a VN with five albino characters in it never used the word.

Eh, I actually kinda agree about Giselle being "overrated"; I liked her as a character, but not to the "gushing" extent that a lot of other people did. Michael is more responsible for the "unusually good" elements of their relationship, in my opinion.
