No arguments there, it's ugly as hell but I am glad that Mazda is willing to take a gamble and serve a niche market.

I've got a huge bottle of Ultima Paint Guard Plus that I've been slowly using. I might put a second coat on today since it goes on in about 10 minutes. It makes stuff rinse off faster, but it's still a pain in the rear end to wash a black car. I might go back to doing a no rinse wash in my garage periodically since I have no shade in my driveway and get instant water spots

I finally got my car up on my friend's quickjack lift and tried to figure out where all my clunks are coming from. I couldn't find anything obviously loose or worn out in the rear end so my only guess now is I should pump in some fresh grease into the Moog endlinks and assume that they are just noisy by design since I also added the JBR rear sway bar at the same time?

I did notice that my rear bumper stops are damaged and falling apart. So rear struts and new bump stops will happen shortly.

I took off the plastic covers over the rear trailing arms and inspected the bushings. They look pretty solid. No visible cracks or signs of damage. I couldn't physically shake or move them by yanking in them. So I think they're still good.

I then looked under the front end. The front end links did not wiggle or seem damaged but I don't think oem end links are that pricey so I may replace them preventatively. Again, none of the bushings seemed like they had any tears. The only clunking or loose feeling stuff I could find or isolate were the strut hats/bearings which appears to be a common failure and as I posted earlier, there are some updated or revised replacement parts from Ford.

So on the short list, I think I will be buying the Koni SAS (updated version of the FSDs) front and rear, new bump stops all around, front strut bearing and top hat, and maybe front end links.

Is there anything else that I should do at the same time?

If the front sway bar links (presuming it has them) have the ability to be greased shoot a few liberal squirts up in there. Couldn't hurt!

Quiet you! I've had a new filter in a box in my garage for probably a year that I've been meaning to replace in my gen 1.

Prepare for contortions. As far as I remember, it was;

Remove glove box
Remove electrical relay assembly
Remove center console cover panel
Remove bracket

Then you get to wedge your arm up behind the HVAC controls to make sure the filters are stacked properly.

On the Gen3 it's

Open glovebox
Squeeze sides of glovebox to drop it down
Remove cabin air filter
Install new.

Took me literally a minute.

Yeah I've replaced mine a few times. I just assumed replacing filters was bad, but then I replaced the filter in my girlfriend's gen couple in 2 minutes. One minute of that was cleaning a bunch of junk out of the glovebox.

And the dealer still wanted to charge me like $150 to do it.

How about the headlight bulbs on later gens?? I hate trying to get those little metal brackets right on my first gen! My 06 Impreza had something similar although a lot more room to work with. I did actually pay last time just to not deal with it.

Yeah, FL22 is Mazda’s long life coolant; pretty sure the general consensus is to stick with it. As mentioned, you have to go to a dealer to buy it.

Hey I’m done with grad school and since I didn’t get the job that would let me commute by bike from where I already live I may be getting a new car.

My first choice is a Mazda 3 hatch and I’ve got a budget around $15-16,000. My question is: would I be happier with a 2014 Grand Touring or a 2018 Sport?

There’s something about having the revised interior (for a body type I’d prefer to the new one anyway, even if I were in the market for a new car) as well as the lower mileage (10k vs 30k) but OTOH the leather seats and sunroof would be pretty neat.

Sunroofs are overrated. I’ve got a ‘14 iGT. I rarely open the shade because I get a glare from behind my sunglasses and I never ever open the glass because it’s too loud at anything over 30mph.

The imitation leather is holding up really well after 100k miles. Cleaning is easy, and it’s not as sticky as I thought it would be on hot days. That said, I’m not sure it would be enough to push me into a 4 year older car.

Does the base model 18 still have a cheesy radio? Infotainment and now CarPlay was a huge reason to go up a few trim level for me, but I bet they’ve had to include the big screen for a reverse camera in the base by now.

Hm, if the 3 has a notably louder sunroof than other cars it may not be worth it. I plan to put a roof rack on it anyway.

Also good info. I misremembered, though, the 2014 iGT actually has just under 21k miles on it, so only a bit more than 2x the '18 S.

Negative, it has the infotainment screen w/backup camera:

Both have the 2.0L engine, incidentally. Here's a quick comparison:

'14 iGT: $15k, 21k miles, heated leather seats, power seat adjustment, sunroof
'18 S: $16k, 9k miles, cloth seats, improved interior + infotainment controls

I'm not in a tremendous rush, since I'll be away for a lot of the summer and maybe others will come on the market before then. But I do look forward to the prospect of replacing my '98 Ford Escort Wagon and its <100 remaining hp on a 4-speed slushbox.

I live in west/central NC, where it does get pretty cold (below freezing) in the winter -- it doesn't bother me, but it sure bothers my wife who is from Florida. One of the conditions of this car is that it be something she can ride in, because the Escort I currently drive makes her physically ill whenever she gets in it. Also she is embarrassed to be married to someone who drives a 20yr old econobox.

The 2014 GT has Bose speakers, the 2018 S seems not to. The '14 also has automatic seats, while the '18 does not.

Either of them would obviously be a massive improvement over what I currently drive, which was a replacement for my 2000 Protege that I ruined by not taking proper care of it. RIP first car.

It most likely doesn't but you can get it upgraded for 4-500 at a dealer or do it yourself for like 100 and a couple hours of your time.

The 2018 may have fallen under the free CarPlay upgrade program depending on how long it sat on the lot. The 2014 would almost definitely cost a bit to get it added.

Oh this is interesting—do you know of a guide/tutorial somewhere, maybe earlier on this thread? While driving experience and fuel economy are my priorities, having a good audio system would sure be nice.

Is this more or less complex a task than building a desktop computer?

The retrofit isn’t particularly difficult, but it takes a solid afternoon to do. A lot of the time is waiting. The kit is less than $200 on eBay and this guide along with some YouTube videos on popping the trim got me through it.

Much simpler than building a PC, you just need to pop a few trim panels and run a couple wires through the center console. Took me maybe an hour and a half including the software update one day after work.

As an aside, I can't believe how easy it is to take an interior apart nowadays. Used to be I'd be breaking clips and poo poo, but the entire dash and center console came off in like 6 pieces.

Went and had a look at the new models today (didn't drive because I'm not going to buy anyway so didn't think there was any point).

First impression was the car looks gorgeous inside and out but feels a lot snugger/more closed in inside than the previous shape (especially with the sunroof). The headliner is black in all hatch models which also contributes to the closed in feel.

There are now only three trims in my market (NZ), GSX (base 2l), GTX (mid spec 2.5) and Limited (high spec 2.5) with the X to come later in another trim that sits above Limited. The Limited lists for close to $50k NZD already so good luck selling anything above that. All models are auto/FWD only, no more manuals.
