That's an interesting point.

I'll be honest that I read the character as a queer woman rather than specifically non-binary, but that doesn't change my interpretation: the High Table is so powerful that masculine ego or masculine intimidation are irrelevant. They're not the mob, so they don't need some hulking dude to be their enforcer...their reputation is so formidable, that this person who might be marginalized or disrespected in another context 100% won't be in this one. The Adjudicator is not intimidated or vulnerable, because nobody would dare gently caress with them because of who they represent.

I think this is more shown by the fact that everyone is scared of the Adjudicator and they don’t even fire a bullet. Their power is entirely bureaucratic and therefore the opposite of everything John stands for.

It sort of felt like they realized they wouldn’t be able to wrap it up in one movie while working on 3, so I wouldn’t be overly surprised if they hadn’t already filmed some of it.

Ultimately my assessment is that while I agree that the story they’re trying to tell here is too much for one movie, it’s also not enough for two. It’d be nice if franchises other than massive superhero tentpoles could survive releasing three-hour flicks.

I don't know, it seems like the plot of the next one will be John and the Bowery King joining forces with other underclass malcontents angry with the High Table, and then murdering all of them. I could see that being a complete film in its own right. The entire plot of Chapter 2 was concerned with killing 2 members of the HT. You've even got themes...the Italian crime groups, the Bratva, the Yakuza. Sounds cool to me.

My mistake. Yeah, I liked Chapter 3, but by the end, it definitely seemed to be treading water a little. It's also the longest one, at 2h10m...I think I'd have been happier with a leaner edit.

I get this funky high on the yellow sun.

Did they ever say "I have served. I will be of service" in the first two? They probably did and I forgot, it was just so extra repetitive here (though still relevant).

Also, my low-key favorite part was when the Continental fight music started and I realized it was the opening theme from Chef's Table on Netflix (which yes I know is an actual classical piece). But all I could think about was food porn montages.

I feel like the choreography in this one became too loose and wasn't as tightly controlled as the previous films. Too many instances where there is a pause that's just too long as one character is waiting for their opponent to attack again. The most glaring example for me was when John gets kicked through the crystal skull cases and each time he gets up he stands for a second waiting to be kicked again instead of attempting to counterattack. I guess that if it's a nod to old action movies then it serves its purpose, but everything else about the series has been so polished that I can't overlook it.

That one particular example is because of the length of the shot. Choreography always suffers during long takes like that. I think it's meant to be appreciated more for the stunt work.

Huh, I thought the Adjudicator was coded androgynous/non-binary to show that they had moved beyond such things, as an actual kind of dehumanization to show that they were nothing more than the will of the High Table. I read it as a sort of sublimation of identity instead of an assertion of one. I can see how it can be read as the opposite tho; that's very interesting.

Hi, being genderqueer or non-binary is still being human. Reading someone's androgyny as "inhuman" in 2019 is... not great

I really appreciated the greater variety in action set pieces for this one. Loved the first two movies but it was refreshing to see them mix it up a bit more.

Reeves really sells being exhausted in that last sequence in the big glass room. The first half of his fight with Dacascos he looks pretty tired and unable to keep up until he gets a second wind and starts turning the tables. I also enjoyed Dascoscos as Wick's own Revolver Ocelot in this.

Also John Wick uses a horse like a gun. Twice.

Oh I know they wouldn't do it, there's no benefit and would probably just make things worse. But when you're standing there with a pissed off John Wick and the only person there to witness what happens is the guy you're taking everything away from, I'd be a little bit nervous. But hey, that's why I'm not Adjudicator material.

They'd just send another Adjudicator who would probably look very similar to the last one.

It feeds into the idea that she has no identity beyond that of the will of the council. Anything that she might have been before that is either shorn away or no longer relevant.

Just saw this. Extremely entertaining. That knife fight had the whole theater cracking up. Is it just me or did they take some inspiration from Assassin's Creed? JW is already pretty videogamey in a lot of aspects, might as well borrow elements from specific ones.

Also Lawrence Fishbourne continues to be a gem.

:dukedog:
I liked this movie more than 2 overall but holy poo poo the journey to the elder and that character was like, so bad after they already revealed a bit of the hierarchy in 2. It felt like the script needed another pass to make this fit, like they wanted to sort of have this unseen but omnipotent "heavenly" equivalent to Laurence Fishburne's underworld king. Looking at the thread everyone's already pointed out how that whole sequence was just felt like a weird wheel spinning. I would have just confined it to the foundry making the coins and just the regions high table or whatever person be there. The rest of his quest to find himself or whatever felt tacked on, plus in an already weak score we got the super generic annoying Middle Eastern Mysticism music.

Speaking of mysticism, again, like they want to again have this near mystical depiction of the guy running the show but the way things are shown in 2, like that just isn't how stuff works. Like in the second movie we learn that Santino and his sister are members of the Camorra which is an irl old crime syndicate with various feuding families. Like having another "no no these are the REAL ancient crime people running the show" on top of that felt really weird. And again with a tighter script yeah they could have played with how each major group has sort of an underground side to it like they do with Fishburne or with Anjelica Houston's character and how they all periodically feud with each other. And again, like, I don't know I hear that generic Mysterious Middle Eastern Stuff music and it just immediately makes me lose interest.

Still loved the movie though and am already hype for John Wick 4. I am sad that Mark Dacascos died though. :(

People brought up how you could see things slowing down at times, when I was watching the movie, remember how it opens up with the doctor and how he has John shoot him twice to make sure he can convincingly seem like he didn't help John out willingly. Because of that I was actually expecting some kind of convoluted face turn where the ninjas were going "easy" on John because they were working with Winston or with Laurence Fishburne the entire time like they faked his execution or something. Partially because it was spoiled for me ahead of time that that character lives.

If they go the TV series route it'd be a great way to have like Ruby Rose's character from 2/etc. pop up again. IIRC from when they were talking about that they would have Reeves pop up occasionally in it as a cameo or show up as a force of nature towards the end of a story arc that throws stuff into disarray. Could be cool.

Saw it a third time tonight, this time in IMAX, and huh, seeing it in IMAX was better than seeing it in Dolby.

The sounds of punches & kicks landing, gunfire, glass shattering, attack dogs chewing through human flesh, etc. all have more impact in IMAX.

Also this is the first movie I've seen this many times in a week since The Force Awakens back in 2015. I just can't get enough!

Hello fellow Force Awakens lover buddy.

Also maybe I'm easier to entertain than most but I didn't find any particular section of the movie lacking. Every new sequence stayed relatively interesting, and I didn't really feel the length of the movie either, with the exception of the big finale, which I felt went on just a few minutes too long.
