En route to evacuate the Andaman Islands, the Japanese heavy cruiser Haguro is ambushed in a close-range night torpedo action by RN destroyers Saumarez, Venus, Vigilant, Virago, and Verulam while transiting the Malacca Straits. USS Hawkbill torpedoes the minelayer Hatsutaka off Borneo.

I'm almost sure they were close to 100% accurate. Kinda hard for reports to be inaccurate when there are no reports anymore. :v:

Beyond building ships, I sort of hope it has a somewaht better political model and ability to handle multiple conflicts?

It always felt weird that basically only *one* country could actually be at war and it was always with you.

Guam takes more planes from the Allies.

We take more losses to a bombing raid. Curses, a few more days and we would have been fully operational!

Those stupid airfield bombing runs.

My carriers are not finding much. Which is a disappointment.

Where are the escorts?

Grumble.

I protect the raiders.

Efficiently.

I can always depend on the lads at Guam.

My god, they lost a lot of planes today.

Again, I would have noticed a 2000lb bomb report.

So either the AI is using most of its strategic bombers to hunt down ships or there are BTDs already active. Not a whole lot of planes can cart around 2000lb bombs.

8 aircraft is a rather symbolic amount though. Did they just stick a flight deck on a freighter, and still used it as a freighter as well?

They were tankers with flight decks slapped on the top, I have to imagine the 8 planes were entirely just whatever would fit on the end of the deck.

Rather amusingly, the two surviving ships of the 'class' had their decks peeled off-post war and just kept on being tankers, none of them having seen any combat. Surely if they'd been sent to the front it would have changed the tide of war. Grey get on it, maybe they'll reach Pearl by 1946!

So seriously, what does our pilot list look like? Are a reasonable number alive and not MIA/KIA? What kind of average XP do these guys have? Grey has an ahistorically successful piloting squadron, somehow, so how is that playing out with the various stats for new pilots and such?

Does the IJN/IJA have any capability to rotate good pilots back to training squadrons? Or is that not possible wihtin the game engine? Or is it not really worth it in the end to figure out how to transit them back to somewhere behind the lines, etc?

It is in the game, but a mod corrected a stat that was 1 point off. Like, the firing angles of one of the machine guns.

It absolutely is possible, and assigning good, high xp pilots to the training command IIRC gives any newly recruited pilots better starting stats. This can be further enhanced by having the on-map squadrons do training flights.

So rather than having all your pilots get killed, dump 'em into training command then and let them sit given you're going to take a couple hundred air losses the next time the carriers go out anyways?

Yeah, they caught them before the main fighters had finished repairing after being unloaded, and since then, the runway has been to cratered by daily bombing for anyone to take off.

With enough administrative effort, it's entirely possible to juggle Japan's training program in order to produce competitively skilled pilots.

It ... just happens to take a lot of administrative effort, in a game with an abysmal UI for doing so.

It's like trying to shift hundreds and hundreds of lines from one spreadsheet to another, without windows, and while only being able to select one line at a time.
