I wish I could find a shiny burmy. Mothim looks GORGEOUS. So far, I'm torn between mothim and vespiquen. I might swap water monkey for a relicanth or that pink clamperl evolution. There's so many neat pokemon I have yet to use! I just wish I could get a numel or camerupt outside of friend safari.

Everyone bitches about the level curve in gen 2. And it's true, the level curve sucks, especially through Kanto. I'm here to bitch about pokemon distribution. See, gen 2 introduces two new types, dark and steel, one of the three or four efforts to curb rampant psychic abuse, especially since a new great psychic in Espeon was released. The only dark type available before Kanto is Umbreon. Worse, two of the dark types, Murkrow and Houndour, are available at night on Route 7, the small route with one patch of grass between Saffron and Celadon. Murkrow has a 30% encounter rate in this one patch of grass at night, and 10% on the other routes he's found on west of Celadon. Houndour has a 5% encounter rate in this same patch of grass and only that patch of grass. The only others are Sneasel, just outside Mt Silver, and Tyranitar, with Larvitar in Mt Silver. Crystal at least fixes this some by putting Sneasel in Ice Path just before the 8th gym, but Yeesh. Steel is at least slightly better off with early access to Magnemite, but Scizor and Steelix are more unfeasible due to difficult to access metal coat, Pineco out of rare trees, and Skarmory is later as well. Moreover, there are plenty of instances like Remoraid available in one route just before Blackthorne city as a 5% encounter with the Super Rod, obtained way later in Kanto. I kind of expect that to happen with pokemon like Bagon, only available in one postgame room in 3rd gen, or in 6th gen when the selection was massive. The only thing 2nd gen really has going for it is the story of Team Rocket trying to force evolution, which Lance must have done since all three of his Dragonites are below the level that Dragonair evolves.

Pokémon distribution as a whole is skewed towards Gen I for a good portion of the game. The first couple routes are littered with Pidgey, Ratatta, and Geodude, they give you early access to Ghost types but it’s Gastly with Misdreavus not appearing until way later, you have a Bellsprout tower and a Slowpoke dungeon, the gym leaders are very heavily weighed towards using Gen I stuff... Most of Johto didn’t give me the ‘this is a whole region with whole new Pokemon’ vibe, it gave me a ‘hey here’s all the old stuff all over again with a couple bonus monsters’ vibe. Bleeeh.

Yup. The link cable is actually a wormhole that connects two versions of any given region and allows trainers from each version to trade pokemon with each other.

I've just gotten to the Battle Pyramid. Remember when I said that I wasn't aware of a villain in any continuity whose plans involved Ho-Oh? Turns out I was wrong: the villain is Ash himself, while possessed by the ghost of the King of Pokelantis. I guess you could consider it a Yu-Gi-Oh parody, but so far the concept is being played straight. I can't help but note that even before he's possessed, Ash's behavior in this episode is unusually foolish, if not outright amoral. He acted like Lawrence III. Edit: Another one for the stock plots list: "A Pokemon steals Ash's hat or badges." Edit 2: 270 Coordinators at the Kanto Grand Festival. And Lillian doesn't correct Jessie when she claims that all the competitors have 5 Ribbons each. That's 1350 Contests. Though Max's line about "the best Coordinators in the world" could imply that they're not all from Kanto Contests. Silver2195 fucked around with this message at 00:52 on May 23, 2019 |

I doubt they would ever do such a mechanic, but I imagined a system where leaving a Pokemon in the box for too long caused them to become out of shape and lazy. They would lose a maximum of 20 levels and attacks work 50% of the time and you either have to whip them back to shape yourself with much anguish and yelling at them or put them in daycare/a specialist to fix them.

That only encourages you to ignore your boxed teammates more since they’re not only weak, but lazy slobs. It is hilarious to imagine that almost every early game Bug and mammal are sitting around, eating frosting from a ttub and sobbing when the cursor of the PC yet again passes them by. My headcanon is that evolution levels aren't the same for everyone. Some trainers have a stronger affinity towards certain Pokemon and have an easier time raising them than other people.
