I'll be 100% honest, I've been debating rereading Transmet but it's top three on the "things I read growing up I worry I'll absolutely find horrid in the light of day" scale, especially since it's been a while now since I found Ellis clicked for me.

There's a lot about how Darick Robertson designed the fashion and art of the city around Spider that I find myself thinking of a lot now. He had a lot of people running around with these big garish shirt slogans that looked like graffiti art and I've seen the same look on actual people on the street lately. A lot of the political humor and commentary has either aged incredibly poorly--the Beast is so blatantly Richard Nixon, the Smiler is so blatantly Tony Blair--or doesn't feel like it goes far enough in order to be a parody anymore. The relatively early issue where Spider covers an actively fascist candidate, for example, feels like a slightly dirtier version of some actual alt-right party's press conference.

I flat out don't understand where people think Warren Ellis is hateful of the common man. He does have stories about "hard men making hard choices" but he's never dismissive of the public and a lot of his villains are those people who think they know better and do horrible things "on their behalf."

I think it's because relatively few of his stories are from the common man's perspective. His protagonists may like them, but it's in a somewhat distant, patronising way with a fair dose of anger and mockery thrown in.

He also does generally believe that things are getting better...we just have to work towards them and put in the effort to make sure things keep getting better. Shortcuts and solutions tend to backfire badly. Spider's childhood is a good example of that and more recently all the problems of Injection stem from a small handful of people making the Hard Choice to make the world fantastical and mythical again and how badly that goes.

Now that you mention it, the actual mission statement in Global Frequency is that the 20th century was all about governments, rulers, and spies making bad decisions and leaving all these potential disasters lying around, so now a skilled independent group that counts many civilians in its ranks is taking it upon itself to deal with those problems. Yeah, a lot of the individual GF agents in the series are experts in their fields or military specialists of some kind, but the series repeatedly makes a point that it's still technically a civilian organization. A guy even says in the last issue, "We'll save our own lives and grow our own wings."

Very few comics in general are from the common man's perspective, especially sci-fi and superhero comics which is 90+ percent of what Warren Ellis writes. And I'm even going to call bullshit on that, because Ellis wrote Crecy, which is the story of some important British victory in one of their bazillion wars with France, and it's written entirely from the perspective of a common enlisted soldier.

It's also important to remember that Ellis is from a culture which has historically been much more comfortable with nasty protagonists -- just because somebody wrote some Judge Dredd stories doesn't mean they're a fascist, after all.

After Heath Ledger died Ellis put out what was basically a post-mortem character assassination of Ledger, in which he got every salient fact about Ledger's death wrong. His fans called him out on the inaccuracies and rather than apologise he started calling his fans too stupid to understand him. Someone just said that just because John Wagner writes Dredd it doesn't mean that he is a fascist; well, the same applies to Ellis and Spider Jerusalem.

Authority ramming their supership through the not-Fu Manchu city or straight up sinking an island ruled by alien baddies (presumably killing millions) is very much in line with Judge Dredd launching the nukes at East Meg One. Neither is followed by a giant neon "WE ARE THE BADDIES" sign but the reader is expected to think about the implications themselves.

btw just for context about the person who is totally not mad at dril and combined Succubus + Cirno for their twitter username and has "#LewdRP" in their bio. Cirno is from the Touhou game series and she is a child. So anyone who's being mean to that pedo is super cool and good.
