King of Bees posted:Like I'm really proud and happy when a sailor makes chief but if that's the pinnacle of your life, whoah boy. Can you imagine a Capt putting on a sticker and wearing a shirt and getting a tattoo? Or a Lcdr? Or whatever? I work with a lot of people who probably unironically believe the best thing they ever did was put on some anchors. About two years into my DoD gig I got 100% through nepotism we moved from trailers into an actual building. All the retired chiefs petitioned hard to get assigned parking, so the parking right outside was GS-12 and above and GS 11 and below got a lot down a hill. Well it turns out most of the retired Chiefs are 11s or lower, so they all went into the Commander's office to persuade him that the parking should be ordered by PRIOR NAVY RANK. Parking is now on a first come basis. Lots of retired Chief's like to put Retired Chief/Senior Chief/Master Chief on their signature lines, as if a single one of us cares. If one of them comes into my office to talk about an issue they almost always segue into some loving dumbass sea story that I don't care about. If you're still in (lol) and you think Chiefs are bad now, I daresay they're worse after retirement.

My school has engineers doing a lot of applied but the EE class I'm taking has been all theory I will never even think about cause technology is so far ahead. The cruise ship I was on would weigh anchor and sail from this southern France port right around the time the show started. Since the thruster compartment was right under the orchestra pit, and the chain locker went right through the backstage changing rooms, we’d disrupt the poo poo out of the show whenever we were running late. I tried to convince the orchestra to start playing anchors aweigh when they saw me and my gang run through the balcony on our way to the mooring deck, but alas, they had sticks up their asses.

We had a CMC, former COB type, try to convince them that the CMC spot should be Bumblefuck 3. Um no, you're not 3rd in the CoC you moron (although he acted like he was in fact the third in the CoC). Incidentally, in my 20 years, I only ever yelled at 3 enlisted Sailors. He was one of them.

Honestly and unfortunately with too many of them it isn't a "Wow, I'm proud and humble to have achieved this level of responsibility and I'll do the best I can to make sure the sailors under me are given the best support I can possibly give them." It's more like "gently caress how do I keep the CO happy and keep my perks." My biggest problem with the Chiefs Mess is we are too scared to say no when we need to.

I will say to anyone who becomes a chief remember this for initiation: "Wow, I'm proud and humble to have achieved this level of responsibility and I'll do the best I can to make sure the sailors under me are given the best support I can possibly give them." And never loving forget it. Because it's really easy to forget and start slapping pirate stickers on your truck. Be one of the good ones.

What’s super-funny is witnessing any part of their “initiation” (hazing) where they; Bury their old uniforms in a mock graveyard - Fill sandbags and stack them then un-stack them - Do PT a bunch - the chiefs “running” the “initiation” park RV’s near the site of this as its all so exhausting for them so they need a break area apparently - oh, and making the initiates do thing like pick them up breakfast to go from diners (that are like 30 miles away). And at the end, they all cry and hug each other and congratulate each other in a way not all that unlike the weirdness of the old Navy Battle Stations evolution at RTC. “yay, we did a bunch of easy, mediocre things but sleep dep makes it all seem so emotional and important!” And to top it all off its strictly voluntary, but to my understanding if you skip the initiation you aren’t considered a real chief and you’ll never go past E-7... Like some secret blacklist IDK.
