My grandma is super Lutheran, and used to drag me to church on Sundays with her after I got my learners permit. The reverend was actually a legit guy, he would tell funny stories and would talk about how credit cards and bankers were going to destroy the country. I really liked going to church, it gave me a fuzzy warm feeling to be a part of this community. Then the church hosted a guest preacher who said that George Tiller getting shot was 'gods vengeance'. I stopped going after that.

What i was taught (by my Jesuit-trained mom) is that in Catholicism a marriage is something ordained by God and just blessed by the church. If you are in a relationship that isn't the real permanent one ordained by God, a church wedding doesn't make it real or valid, it's just a mis-aimed blessing. So an annulment isn't a retcon that says that the marriage (in the civil sense) didn't happen - it's a formal recognition that the marriage was a mistake in which the partners thought they were in their one true relationship but actually weren't. I don't think that makes kids invalid or illegitimate in the eyes of the church, since everybody involved was actively following their conscience.
