The epilogues deliberately shading into fanfiction and including non-Hussie authors is bringing us closer to the point where Homestuck is some kind of public domain creative commons thing where anything anyone makes is about as canon as anything else. Homestuck spirals off into a loose collection of folklore, like the tales of Robin Hood or King Arthur, and when Disney adapts it into an animated movie in a century or so the "canon" they draw from will only be a tenth original Hussie material.

also the concept of canon is, of course, explicitly discussed in the text of the epilogues 'owning the rights to the property' is deliberately not discussed as a pillar of canonicity

Clawtopsy posted:While the albums are good, I find I give less of a poo poo about the tracks not attached to a particular [S] Really? Some of my absolute favorite tracks never made it into the actual comic. Lotus Bloom, Alternia, Pumpkin Party in Sea Hitler's Water Apocalypse, Sburban Reversal, Dawn of Man, Dance of Thorns, Lies with the Sea, Green Ghost, Your Universe, and probably a BUNCH of tracks from volume 10, especially Renewed Return, and EXTRA especially Conclude. Hell, there's even some tracks from the first unofficial fan album that make my top homestuck songs list. Heir-Seer-Knight-Witch is in my top 20 most-played tracks of my entire iTunes library. Honestly the music is one of the biggest factors in my enjoyment of homestuck overall and I scooped up nearly every album they put out and made a point of listening to all the stuff that HADN'T made it into the comic, and I'm glad I did, there's tons of gems like these.

I like vol. 5 because it had a lot of remixes, barely any curation, and still had that wholesome chiptune feel

Spellman posted:I like vol. 5 because it had a lot of remixes, barely any curation, and still had that wholesome chiptune feel Yeah, Vol 5 was the first one to feature non-comic music so it swept up all the stuff that had been made or not used for pages over the first year. Including when Hussie came to the team and said "yo can someone make me a remix of Doctor for a thing" and got like fifteen tracks.

I didn't like the music after act 6 came out as much, independent of my distaste for the comic post-then, but the music up until then was and is outstanding

Ive never listened much to anything that wasnt used in the comic, but im glad the kickstarted video had a full comic recap set to dance of thorns. Its so unabashedly anime and guitar heavy it got me good.

I came to Homestuck pretty late, and even without any nostalgia for it I still love the music. It's my go-to to put on when I need some background noise for working to. It helps that there's like 20+ hours of it, so it doesn't repeat too often.
