As a huge fan of heavy mid tempo/space rock music I just recently discovered Failure and Year of the Rabbit. Can’t believe I never heard of these guys before. Any recommendations for other bands similar to Failure/Hum/Shiner?

Looking for old school lounge music, think first track of the La Dolce Vita soundtrack (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zme3ZWvRjdQ) the first minute. Preferably instrumental, this is pretty vague I know and I apologize. I guess instrumental Bossa Nova would fit in here as well!

Yes, Todd Terje is the big name when it comes to the Norwegian space disco thing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebjXsc0UjdQ He's got a ridiculously strong catalogue of italo/disco/lounge bangers as well as heaps of good remixes. There are loads of associated acts that tend to remix each other, appear on the same compilations etc. Some personal favourites: Magnus International https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GX89eUsmZEc Skatebård https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfyXarwgTSw Diskjokke https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DCGnjYY5ng Cavego https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-gVpV8R0CI Pitchfork did an "introduction to" thing about Norwegian disco a while back which is more about tracing the lineage and influences: https://pitchfork.com/thepitch/an-introduction-to-norwegian-disco/ Also, less about space but excellent Norwegian disco sounds nonetheless Hubbabubbaklubb https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSFhDlNSQVk Kommode https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_vGGuhA0kg Sorry about the amount of youtube links. Trying to find something to match an animation I'm making and keep finding almost the right song. Anyone know something which is similar in style to these and carries a consistent mood throughout? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVAvc_DkPeU (Would be perfect without the quieter singing parts) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_2SQHJoLB4 (Everything before ~2:40 is just about perfect for what I'm trying to make, everything after doesn't fit at all) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQdH1IGhW6c (Also just about perfect. Again, the part starting ~2:40 doesn't really fit) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8phKeq_BFCc (Most consistent for the full duration but not quite right. Looking for something more in the style of the other three but without the significant changes)

So I have a band I absolutely love. Good news is that they're still together and making music and the frontman literally released his first solo album like a month ago (different but still very much my jam). I need more music like Starset in my life. They're often described as "cinematic rock" and "electronic rook" and well, I can't think of a much more effective descriptor tbh. If I had to point to one song in particular that nails what I love about this band and want more of, it's this one, "Satellite": https://youtu.be/LyJAoB_OmdE So here's what I really dig about the band: the power rock elements that are very "epic" sounding (hence why I think "cinematic rock" describes it pretty well) mixed with the very obvious synth/electronic and frankly sci-fi vibes (the band literally has constructed lore about the band that makes this point of inspiration that much more obvious). This penchant for multilayered work extends to MNQN, the aforementioned solo project. I go back and forth between thinking that element is really cool and kinda obnoxious, but it definitely provides a point of inspiration for Dustin Bates so from that perspective it's cool with me. In googling I found a handful of not entirely off recommendations, but a lot of them were either other projects by Dustin himself or, funnily enough, Christian rock. I suppose it tracks that the sort of dramatic vibes would lend themselves to religious messaging, but I generally really have a hard time enjoying music that identifies itself as very overtly about religion. It's a hangup I have, what can I say. Those that didn't fall under those descriptors I either already know and/or didn't carry the level of polish I quite want for this particular mood. Any recs immediately spring to mind? Really I absolutely love any music that combines rock and electronic vibes (and is proving inspirational for a writing project I'm working on, truthfully), but Starset hits an exact ratio that's been hitting me just right lately. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. SamuraiFoochs fucked around with this message at 10:17 on May 12, 2019 |

regulargonzalez posted:Digging Yawning Man but can someone clarify what makes this desert rock vs post-rock ala G!YBE and Mogwai, cause that's what I would have classified it as. Technically, it's desert rock because the members are the original founders of the desert rock genre, which evolved in the Palm Desert/Palm Springs/Coachella/Indio area in California. All the guys in Yawning Man, especially Mario Lalli, were/are also involved in all the other original desert rock bands. Wasn't much to do out there but skate where you could and play music at generator parties out in the desert, and the fuzzy psychedelic stoner sound evolved. Current desert rock as a genre actually has picked up a bunch of European bands and gets pretty interchangeable with stoner rock. But you're right, it's a short hop from there to the more stony post rock bands like Russian Circles or Red Sparowes to my ear. I think Yawning Man is definitely the most atmospheric of the genre. They're not quite as dissonant and chaotic as GSY!BE. There's not such a sharp divide between stoner rock, desert rock, post rock, psychedelic, sludge, doom, etc anymore. The documentary Lo Sound Desert is a fantastic introduction to the pioneers of the sound if you're interested. HenryJLittlefinger fucked around with this message at 19:45 on May 24, 2019 |
