Steorra's the only one of the four job bosses that has no real easy cheese strat for her, sealtigce + reflective veil works, but she often just slaps you with her 'no buffs!' debuff just before you start to spam reflects. What a pain.

I like Ophilia's starseer outfit the best, but Primrose is good too. Only Cyrus and Olberic get fancy hats which is a shame, everyone should have one.

Interesting enough, the way I had Cyrus set up, the runes actually made his follow-up to his physical attack do so much more damage than most of his spells. Like putting them into the 10,000 range.

When fighting single foes, Cyrus bopping enemies with a rune-powered staff is a good way to save on his SP. He is my Sorcerer and Tressa is my Runelord. Elemental Bane every turn with a Rune follow-up activated once set-up is :discourse:. And against multiple enemies, he shreds them with his magic anyways.

Generally, while I agree that Tressa is by far the best Runelord in terms of what the class gives her, I am unsure which character would be the worst Runelord since they all reap some benefits.

Sounds like runes are at their best with multi-target physical skills and/or high Elem Attack, and off the top of my head I think Therion is the only one with neither.

He has his divine skill but if you're using that in regular battles you don't need to care about rune damage. Runelord always needs setup so it's really made for boss fights, and in those Therion's fine as runelord since he gets the buffs up really fast, and there are high elem atk weapons he can use.

When I consider who the worst runelord is it's really based off what I need them to be doing in fights. Like Alfyn, he CAN be a runelord but I need him to concoct, not spend turns setting up runes. Olberic and H'aanit can do it fine but their physical prowess is kind of wasted trying to be a runelord instead of a warmaster.

I took the octopath less travelered,

And it made one-eighth the difference.

Music: My Quiet Forest Home

This is Duskbarrow, the final town of the Woodlands. It's on the small side of things as far as towns go, as some of the Chapter 4 towns we'll visit will be surprisingly big and dense. I tell ya, I'm in no hurry to write up stuff for Grandport...

Each region has two music themes for their three towns, and the Woodlands is the only one with a unique Chapter 2/3 theme for Victors Hollow, so S'warkii's theme is used here. The Chapter 4 towns for the Coastlands and Cliftlands have unique themes, everything else uses the Chapter 2/3 theme.

But we'll look into the town more at another day. For now, we need to finish Cyrus's Chapter 4!

This one in particular is very back-heavy. Not too much happens before the final boss, and all seven party banters get stuffed in here. Expect a big update next time.

It's time we discover what secrets Yvon has been hiding, so we can protect them from evil-doers like Yvon and use them for good.

(Somewhere in this town lies the headmaster's ultimate destination. Given the nature of his research, it is reasonable to assume that there is a secret laboratory of some sort.)

(Now that I recall, she disappeared after the incident at the headmaster's house. What's her role in all of this?)

We need to keep an eye on her and see where she's going.

...After some banter, of course!

Ah, yes. You are from this region, are you not?
Aye. Though I have never visited the town, I've heard tell of it. It is famous for the many ruins that surround it. Many of them daten from the age of legends.

For their age, the structures are remarkably well preserved.
Master once tolde me a story of the ruins.

Whatever era they weren built, they weren built strong, using techniques no longer known.
Lost architectural techniques, you say. My interest is piqued. I'm inclined to investigate--after, of course, we have settled this affair of Headmaster Yvon.
Thou art confident of our success...

I love Cyrus's complete confidence here. He knows he will get the job done.

...Though spending time talking to his traveling colleagues rather than using his unparalled focus on the task at hand may not have been the wisest course of action.

A button of sorts?

Now we've got one of the trickiest puzzles in Octopath Traveler, in that we have to exhaust options until we pick the correct one utilize our astounding intellect to decipher the way into these ruins.

First, let's try pressing the button.

Hey, if pushing didn't work, let's try pulling!

Cyrus is truly a master of observation. I don't know, maybe smash it?

Ignore it would kick us out. Oh yeah, every time we pick the wrong answer, we have to go through this little game all over again.

Let's take the final answer available and bop it twist it.

(I should proceed with caution...)

Now that we solved that challenging ordeal of a puzzle, let's celebrate with banter.

To what are you referring?
Finding the hidden door back there.
It was no great thing. I enjoy coming up with little theories and then testing them...

Me, a bandit? Now that would be amusing. But if I do fall onto hard times in the scholarly world, I shall apply to become your prentice.
Hate to disappoint you, but I'm not the teaching type. I learned by watching and doing.
Observation and practice, in other words. That is the essence of all learning.

...I appreciate the offer, but I think I'm allergic to academia.

Man, do I love this one. Cyrus and Therion may not exactly get along, but they eventually do share a mutual respect for the other's work and even see some similarities in each other's careers. They're actually kinda-bonding.

Specifically, I am wondering why you make medicines.
Huh?
I mean, I have never met an apothecary quite so dedicated to his trade. You could use your talents to win riches, or honor, or renown... Yet, you forget to ask for fees, make no claim on those you help... Frankly, I find it unfathomable.

Right. Question answered--let's go, Professor!
...
Professor?
(I asked what I thought was a difficult question...)

I like how in awe Cyrus is over the intellect of this simple country boy. And he's not really wrong either, Alfyn focuses almost all his brainpower on medicine (and drinking) and tries to keep everything else simple, at least as far as events will allow. Of course, he still has some things to think through, but all in good time.

I can afford Olberic's Divine, so I grab it over Warmaster stuff. Brand's Thunder is the strongest Divine in the game besides the new jobs we have.

This party will change, as I've still got banters to collect. For now, though, this will do for the dungeon.

Music: Beneath the Surface

The ruins are, well, ruins. There's actually a couple side-paths to small rooms on a different screen, but I'll visit those a bit later.

It's mostly bats and automatons, nothing new really.

Here's the magic of combining target-all attacks with runes.

After we explore a bit, we eventually reach...

(Yet they still stand strong. And what are these curious patterns? Look how perfectly they're aligned. Whatever could they be for...?)

(Together, the markings illustrate something! Here, they billow and swell... An ocean? A flood? It seems to be depicting something overflowing... And yet, the depiction is abstract and surreal.)

...!

(Might there not be a hidden message contained within?)

...

There's definitely something going on with these runes and this mural, but sadly now is not the time. Perhaps after we find Lucia and learn what Yvon was plotting, we could revisit this.

What it is the time for, of course, is banters.

I don't think I've seen anything quite so...spooky.

Oh? What kind of pictures?
There was one I remember vividly. It showed a girl standing in a sea of grass. I'd stare at it so long I thought I could see the grass moving in the wind. I'll never forget it.
Hm. Most interesting. Yearning, passion, sorrow, hate, one's very essence...

...So what kind of soul is in those paintings?
Hm. Nothing too awful, I hope... But I confess that I am looking forward to cracking the puzzle.

A little bit of Primrose backstory and an earnest discussion on art. Not too shabby.

A little, yes. For example, they clearly date from ancient times. I believe that they have religious significance of some kind.
But I saw nothing in them of the teachings of the Sacred Flame.

You mean, even before the Sacred Flame teachings began?
Precisely so. An age almost entirely unknown to us...

I am blessed indeed, to have been given the chance to visit these ruins. They are a scholar's paradise...
I'm glad, too. It almost feels like I can hear the thoughts of the people who lived long ago.
The very breath of the ancients, borne on the wind over these many long centuries...

I like how Primrose is creeped out by these murals while Ophilia is in just as awe of them as Cyrus. It also shows how strong she is of her faith, showing great interest in the times before the Sacred Flame even existed as an object of worship.

At any rate, I head back and create my final party for this dungeon run. Tressa and Olberic are my last two banters, while Therion needs to open chests and is pretty underleveled beyond that. I go Cleric over Starseer because I need the healing.

The shop here mostly sells elemental-themed gear. This includes Adamantite Shields, which have the second-highest ElemDef of any shield in the game (and number one only beats it by a mere two points). This is a really nice boost for a Cleric. Otherwise, the rods are alright, better than most of my stuff but not my Wizard Rod, and the Enchanted Circlet gives some bonus Max SP but is otherwise in the middle of a very tight hat race of mid-tier hats, which means it's nice but not amazing enough to spend 14.4k when I have so many other fashionable hats to wear.

I also briefly swap to Starseer to pick up Hard Worker for Cyrus. He's pretty much done for a long time after this chapter, might as well have him net my party some extra JP. I'll certainly need it!

The Rune Bow is immediately my second-best bow, and it's still stronger than my "best" weapons in all categories besides staves. Has two great attack stats, and accuracy is actually relevant now. A nice grab.

There's a couple side paths down here. There's another purple chest with cold, hard cash.

And this amulet significantly reduces dark damage. One whole element, oh wow. I'll still never use it.

Going through the bright passage next to the mural takes us here, between those two chests we just collected.

And eventually, we reach a library of sorts.

(Look at all these tomes. Did Headmaster Yvon procure them all?)

Forbidden Gold? Covenant of the Sage!? These books were all said to have been lost ages ago!

(Did the headmaster collect all this by himself? No, that would be impossible for even the most esteemed of scholars.)

...

It seems like we're getting close to finding the mastermind here...

But before we do, let's finish off our banters for the chapter.

I can assure you that if they become known, they will turn the world of scholarship on its head. It is not surprising to learn that knowledge can be lost with the passing of time.

Yet books thought to be gone forever have returned as if from the dead. Which implied they were stolen. Deliberately kept from the world.
Indeed. A most deplorable crime.
And the culprit is this man, Yvon. He would make all knowledge his, and his alone. That is why he hid it away here...

Forsaken. That is exactly the word. To monopolize knowledge in this way is a desecration of scholarship itself.
Spoken like a man truly devoted to his trade. It is only proper that an honorable scholar such as you cast his eyes over these pages once more.

This banter sums up Cyrus's entire character. He is passionate about knowledge and learning, but more than that he wants everyone to have the same access to all knowledge. He wants to educate the world and spread knowledge as far as he can. That is what drives him, and that is why he was so deeply opposed to Yvon.

What is it, Tressa?
I was just thinking about the books here. They all seem very...special. How much are they worth, do you think?

Those books record the history of all that has happened. Every event, from beginning to end.
Gosh...
In other words, they contain the knowledge of the world. Knowledge won at the cost of uncounted lives.
Whoa! I don't think even I could put a price on that!
Quite. They are without question priceless--for they belong to all men.

A splendid idea.

In a world of powerful magic, ancient mysteries, and fearsome beasts, they still have a long way to go as far as technology goes. Though I wouldn't put it past Cyrus to create the Orsterra equivalent of the printing press, he would still need some funding...

We're near the end of this dungeon, and our last chest holds a pretty nice shield. Hefty Evasion penalty, but nicely balanced in both defenses.

Next time, we discover the truth and vow to spread knowledge for all.

I got the impression as early as ch1 that Yvon didn't like Cyrus very much, and he didn't believe a word of the accusations against him (as we all know, Cyrus only lusts for knowledge), he was just looking for an excuse to get rid of him. Unfortunately for him that just freed up Cyrus to go off and meddle in his plans in a more active way.

The ruins are a pretty dungeon, though I'm sure Cyrus is appalled that the library is just open to the elements. The books will get ruined if it ever rains!

Yeah, so far we haven't really seen a direct answer to how Cyrus reconciles his "knowledge must be available to all" philosophy with the fact that he's tracking down a book about gaining power through human sacrifice, but he did seem pretty concerned about the idea of it falling into the wrong hands. On the other hand, he was okay with the book existing in the library, so maybe his position boils down to "make knowledge available even if it's dangerous, but keep tabs on who seems interested in it".

Video: Lucia's Dark Schemes

Music: Pure Evil

I did not come here for false flattery.
Oh, but I was being quite sincere. A shame the purport eludes your grasp.
To think you were the one pulling the strings...

...Very astute. Yes, it was I who maneuvered to install him in that position in the first place. To my dismay, he had a willful streak that got in the way.

One might say that, yes. Now, let us proceed to the matter at hand.

In finding me, you have displayed some measure of knowledge and acumen. More than anything, you have shown a pure and unrelenting passion for seeking out the truth. I hold that particular quality in the highest regard.
...

If that is a jape, it is a poor one.
A jape? What a curious reaction from a scholar like yourself.

Did your heart not race when you saw the countless lost tomes in my study?
......

Yes, any true scholar would feel the same!

Your mind--no, your very soul burns with an all-consuming desire to know. This is what separates you from the rest, Cyrus! We are true seekers of knowledge--you and I!

...

SILENCE

You covet the mysteries of the universe. You yearn to know the truth!

Heh...that's it exactly.

Music: Cyrus, the Scholar

You don't care who you use in your schemes. What of Headmaster Yvon?
Don't be ridiculous. He was devoid of the passion you have. He was nothing but a pawn to the end, incapable of envisioning an ultimate goal.
On what grounds do you base that assumption? Can a man not grow his mind?

Teach him...?

Ha! Preposterous. You speak the impossible.

Knowledgeable as he was, his own actions prevented him from ever approaching genius.

That's where you and I differ. I haven't given up on mediocrity.

What do you mean to do with the knowledge you amass? The secrets you unravel? Carry them to your grave, content that they are inscrutable to all who do not possess your genius? You would call them simpletons...fools...feeble minds...

A true scholar does not look down on others for what they do or do not know. Those who know impart knowledge to those who do not. If something is wrong, those who know the answer correct it. The process repeats, bringing us closer and closer to enlightenment.

I long for the day when I will have the chance to learn from them.

This scene is so amazing. It's Cyrus laying out what truly drives his passion for knowledge while simultaneously rejecting Lucia's offer and finding all sorts of ways to call her out as a bad scholar. And all to his amazing theme. It truly is the most Cyrus scene imaginable.

And it's capped off with one of the best line deliveries in the entire game.

SILENCE

I bet she's not the first woman to say that to Cyrus.

I have already synthesized a perfect blood-crystal, precisely as detailed in the original tome. With it, I will cast off the shackles of humanity. A human can only learn so much in its short lifetime. I will gain the time, the power to understand everything.

Music: For Truth

But know this: when I emerge victorious...

Video: Boss - Lucia

Music: Battle at Journey’s End

Enjoy the music! This is the final boss music for all eight chapters, and it's pretty drat good!

Lucia is one of my favorite bosses due to how unique a fight she is. She starts off with no weaknesses, but shifts to a form with thirty shields!

To make things more difficult, all of these weaknesses are physical. She's weak to all weapons but the staff, which means Scholar Cyrus has no way to break her. Hopefully you've learned a thing or two from all the jobs you've picked up along the way!

And of course, she gets two turns a round, and she hits like a drat truck.

For some reason I forgot I have Thousand Spears, opting for Guardian Liondog as my shield-breaker. Probably because I stuck with the weakness I saw rather than gamble (I don't have weapon order completely memorized like I do the elements). Either way, both those abilities as well as Rain of Arrows are invaluable here, as that's a lot of shields to break through.

Therion's an alright healer, but he lacks a bit of that extra oomph Ophilia has. Good thing I have a ton of these!

So you may wonder why I don't just trivialize this with Transfer Rune and Sidestep. Simple, that'd be too easy and I want to make these actually interesting.

Wallop does big damage and inflicts Unconscious. Not a fun attack to deal with.

Lucia also has some high ElemDef right now, so it's hard to really damage her beyond breaking her. Multi-hit moves and BP management is invaluable more than ever for this fight.

While I won't abuse Sidestep, I will make judicious use of buffs and debuffs.

Besides, it doesn't mean Transfer Rune is useless here! Party-wide Rest is very useful for this first, both to help SP management for Olberic and to help out a small bit with healing.

Lucia's final attack in this form is Pulverize, which deals damage and removes all BP. Nasty, though luckily Tressa only had the one.

This first part is really killing time while I slowly whittle her shields down, throwing what buffs and debuffs I can between heals and attacks.

Eventually, those thirty shields are finally broken, and work can begin.

Brand's Thunder is ridiculous, and honestly I'm kinda glad I didn't have Surpassing Power because otherwise this fight would be a joke.

Though otherwise I still throw all I have at her.

Lucia swaps to a more magical form.

Which means all her weaknesses are elemental. Naturally, the one weakness she doesn't have is Dark.

This also means Runelord can shine a bit more.

Shadow Slash is a nasty rune-like Dark attack that inflicts Silence.

And Shatter Soul obliterates the target's SP.

I didn't really think this one through, as I never did have anyone give him an extra BP.

With only fifteen shields (still a lot!), it doesn't take as long to break her again.

How to fight abominations for fun and profit.

Lucia now has a reasonable number of shields and a healthy mix of weaknesses, but she also has three turns and much more punishing moves.

She can also recover a bit of HP, and she ends up with a boost move that lowers all characters to 1HP.

Naturally, she never gets a chance to show those off.

As Olberic softens her up...

...and Cyrus deals the finishing blow.

SILENCE

If nothing else, your devotion to the pursuit of knowledge is admirable.

And that is the end of Lucia.

How many lives have been lost to the dark knowledge in these pages...

I will use all the resources at my disposal to decipher this work for myself.

Normally, finishing the boss kicks us back to town. But this time, we're not quite done yet.

Music: Beneath the Surface

...Yes, I should return.

After all, Cyrus still has a mystery to solve!

Luckily, it's a short walk back to said library.

At this point, we have to Scrutinize several books.

A forbidden, yet tempting, power of the gods...

...sealed away at the world's edge...

...holding the power of life and death, waiting to be unsealed.

Also, yes, we had to walk back to this book to Scrutinize it.

And there's still encounters.

Otherwise, an uneventful trek back to the mural, where our final required Scrutinize check awaits.

...Well, then.

SILENCE

Indeed, the power of life and death. That is the forbidden secret held within these pages. Trial of the Twelve tells the tale of how the twelve gods sealed this power away. The author of Forbidden Gold compares this power to a golden fruit. Like a golden fruit, it calls out to and tempts the human heart. Into the pages of From the Far Reaches of Hell was this power sealed...

(A warning of the calamity that awaits us if the gate is opened, and the forbidden unleashed.)

Yes...the mural was left behind as warning. I am sure of it.

(It can, however, serve either purpose. All depends on the heart of he who would use it.)

Music: Determination

"For the sake of our future, be not tempted by the darkness..."

......

(And as long as that darkness exists, people will find a way to work evil. I must preserve this knowledge, that we might put it to use for good, not evil.)

There was a nice bit of conversation after the last update about how Cyrus would deal with information that could cause terrible things to humanity, and this is your answer. To Cyrus, evil will always find a way, and all knowledge that may be used for evil is just as valuable in being used to stop that evil.

...And pass them on to those who would follow us.

(First, I must return to Atlasdam and file a report on what I have seen here. Then I must begin my analysis of the material I have collected.)

And at this point, since we have essentially completed Cyrus's story (one cutscene remains), we get the credits.

Video: Credits

Music: Ending Theme

Usually, I'll give my final thoughts and all that during the credits, but we're maybe 2/3's through the LP proper at this point. We still have everyone else's Chapter 4's to go through, plus a ton of side stories, and the post-game is extensive. So I'll save that for after the final boss.

The credits aren't anything special, though they're clever enough. You get one screen from each chapter...

...and get to watch the final blow delivered during each story boss battle you participated in. This was the main reason I wanted to do our main character's story last, to get every death blow in there.

That said, it doesn't really make up for having our already-overleveled main character stay in the party soaking up more EXP and trivializing combat further, so I'm fine getting it done early. Besides, several other characters have significantly more fitting finales for the end.

Though it's fun to watch some of these death scenes again, like Gideon dying of poison.

And Olberic defeating Gustav with a mere Fireball spell.

Also my Switch went dark from inactivity, sorry.

The music is a nice medley of the eight area themes played while exploring the world, followed by the main theme of Octopath Traveler. Sets the tone of a general sense of going on a journey and exploring the world around you.

And after that final blow, we hit the title screen.

But we're not done yet! We've still got the epilogue for Cyrus's story!

Video: Knowledge Illuminates All

Music: Enveloped in Kindness

We're back in Atlasdam, where a familiar face greets us...

Over here, Therese!

And I'll need twice again as many to have any hope of translating this ancient tome!

Fascinating, is it not!?

...and I could not help but notice a parallel to the mural I found.
I see... Hence these books on local folklore?
Just so. Considering your subject from all possible angles is a fundamental principle of scholarly research. Ah, but I forget myself!

Er, yes...

-----

Music: Cyrus, the Scholar

"As long as people live, there is always something to learn... And so we learn, we record, we speak... Points connect, thus forming our history, our agency, our identity... This world we live in is not for, or of, any one individual--and neither is knowledge."

"To plant seeds of knowledge that will be harvested by those who follow me... To you who have found my writings, real well these words..."

And so Cyrus has begun work solving a new mystery, with a newfound purpose to spread knowledge to all.

And I get the feeling "Susanna Grotoff" is implied to be the same Susanna in H'aanit's Chapter 3. Small world, and all.

Music: Cyrus Motif

The motif doesn't actually play here, hell I'm not sure where it actually plays if anywhere, but seems fitting to put it with the ending screen, huh?

Anyway, we have finished our first of the eight main stories within Octopath Traveler.

Cyrus has earned a break. He can take some time off to learn all that he desires.

In the meantime, we still have seven other tales to complete. So who next?

Next time, we'll check out Duskbarrow and then knock off some Side Stories.

Although the scholar being the most forward-thinking and eager to help people, collectively, is really an interesting choice. I can't even remember the last story I saw that didn't either make the scholar a stuffy, behind the times obstacle (so basically Yvon) or a self-interested rear end in a top hat genius. The Mummy maybe? Jeez.

That whole conversation is just Cyrus repeatedly dunking on Lucia.

I mostly associate that feeling with Harrison Ford shouting "it belongs in a museum!"

Battle At Journey's End is my favourite of the boss themes in this game. It's just so good!

Lucia's design as a boss is amazing, she looks like she could smash your entire team into pulp and that 30 shield is really intimidating at first. Too bad she didn't really think things through, turning yourself into a demon NEVER. WORKS. She might very well have been immortal (as in, long lived not invincible), but I don't think being a giant abomination with hands too large to turn pages would work out very well for a lifetime of reading.

Also this is the chapter where everyone else's absence makes the most sense in cutscenes, especially the ending, they know Cyrus is going to lecture them/look at books for hours so the rest of the party probably just sneaked off and went to the pub.

Fitting as Cyrus really is just like

How dare you take these books! They belong in a library!

I stabbed you dude!
I REALLY love that fight because it's incredibly fitting. It requires a lot more thinking than most which works perfectly for Cyrus.

So Cyrus' story is just that episode of Seinfeld where the library cop comes after Jerry for a long overdue book?

That disgust and impatience in Lucia's "Enough" is why the voice acting for fully voiced scenes is so amazing, and the music makes it so much better.

Lucia trying to seduce cyrus is the funniest thing about the scene as well, and is so utterly fitting that he doesn't realize it.

Everyone wants a piece of the HOT C.

On another note, the credits show the English and Japanese VAs for the eight Travelers; funnily/appropriately enough, Cyrus' seiyuu appears to have an unparalleled focus in killing goblins.

Knowledge is pain plus observation.

One down, seven to go.

The credits remembering all your finishing blows is a really nice touch.

Anyways, time for Alfyn to finish his tale so we can continue...

The end of this arc is very reminescent of Dragon Quest IV to me. There's a person using the secret of evolution to become a perfect life form, the original monster with the power of life and death being sealed away (probably sleeping)... I'm not saying they're the same, but there are definitely some parallels.

I think its harder to find a moment in games where turning MONSTROUS does work out for the bad guy.

Even in Resident Evil its never worth it.

I think it tends to work better in anime than video games, like Vegeta turning into a Great Ape.

Sounded more like she was joining in the cat theme and about to bring up a hairball to me :v:

In any case, that was a really satisfying way to end the arc and he's still the best character. I hope the rest aren't going to be disappointing after this in comparison.
