What type of track are you using the delay on (guitar, vocal, etc.)? I would maybe try setting up a Send and then fine-tuning the wet/dry blend that way. You have more control that way.

Yeah this is probably the answer, Valhalla presets always have the mix default at 100%, whereas a lot of other delay plugins I use usually start at 50% (I think? I can't remember now), so you usually have to carve down the mix at least a little if it's on an fx send, moreso if it's an insert plugin.

Wait it defaults at 100% for you? They've always defaulted at 50% for me.

Maybe that's it. I'm going off of very hazy memories here. In any case, I always find myself setting the mix at least 5-15% lower on Valhalla plugs than other verbs and delays, in part because the effects are so lush.

Let's talk about where you're going.
Just a reminder, you can click on the Mix label and lock the mix amount at whatever you set it to while you switch presets.

Thats a handy tip.

I realized that partly I was just too accustomed to my old delay, which was thinner and would eq each feedback loop (so delays would get change in timbre each repeat making space in the mix), and also because of the richness of the delay setting the return channels volume a fair bit lower allowed me much finer control over the mix w/send levels. Valhalla also sits much better in busier contexts. So easy to forget simple things. Especially moving to new tools. E: Thanks for the suggestions too btw.

I'm kicking myself for not going in on it when it was $50 in November, and while I'm not quite in the position to pay full price, $50 would be an immediate buy.

IT'S $50 AGAIN! :woop: And with Trash 2 bundled to boot: https://www.pluginboutique.com/product/1-Instruments/58-Inst-Bundle/4901-iZotope-Trash2-Iris-2-Bundle-Exclusive-
Sale started Friday and lasts till Tuesday. Don't underestimate Trash 2, too, it's got several modules from Alloy as bonus processors, so you're getting a pretty good multiband compressor as part of the package!

I bought this primarily for Iris2, but I've been using Trash2 so so so SO much more. The amount of crazy freaky distortions it has is unreal. I find a lot of synth presets I really like when making a tune but always want to modify them into something more special, and Trash2 does this in spades. It can totally annihilate a kickass sound/arp/seq into something entirely different and still keep it sounding kickass.

Wait, so I can get the Komplete Select for €99 with NI's code till 6th of June, then go from that to K12U for €495 and then K12U CE for €295... or go from Select to K12 and then CE, that's €100 cheaper. Could go lower with K11U from a third-party store, I need to figure this out.

That is exactly what I need right freaking now. I've been layering squelches, blips and bloops to finish off a song and it's painful digging through piles of samples and then modifying them enough to be unrecognizable but still usable. Chain this to Trash2 and it'll hopefully be a godsend.

Believe this will give you a cheaper upgrade/crossgrade path not just to RX Standard/Advanced, but some other iZotope products/bundles as well (e.g. JRR shop has some deals on crossgrades from "any Elements" going right now: https://www.jrrshop.com/izotope), so might be worth picking up if you have plans to pickup other iZotope plugins in the future.

So Plugin Boutique has all the elements level software from Isotope for $50 till July 8.

https://www.pluginboutique.com/product/2-Effects/39-FX-Bundle/5469-iZotope-Music-Essentials-Bundle

My question is: is Izotope even any good? I feel like it is, but that might be because SonicState plugs for them a LOT. I have ozone elements and vocal doubler and I find the first thing I do when I make changes to a track is to go through and disable all the iZotope stuff I have in the project because I can't deal with the input delay they introduce.

am I crazy?

If your PC is up to it, I think they're worth it. I'm currently working on the finishing touches of an EP I'm about to release and I have Vintage EQ, Vintage Tape and Maximizer in my master channel for every track. I don't use them on individual instruments, but I can definitely hear a noticeable improvement using them in my master channels.

You gotta use them sparingly though, of course. It's not hard to push them too far and then they start loving up your sound.

There's nothing good in that price range and you're better off staying with free stuff. Assuming you don't have a full version of Kontakt, VSCO Community Edition would be your best bet: https://vis.versilstudios.com/vsco-community.html Community stuff is in general much better than cheap commercial libs like Synful or Sonivox's Orchestral Companion, which isn't worth the £1 it's sometimes sold at. Too bad the best free patches are made for Kontakt.

Now if your budget was higher (I know), Amadeus on sale (it's normally $149 but has been $99 twice) is the best entry point right now and works with the free Kontakt Player https://sonicscores.com/amadeus

An alternative solution would be checking auctions/garage sales for old sampler CDs and use something like Shortcircuit 2 to convert them into a usable format.

e: lmao Synful is five hundred now. free soundfonts can sound better

Yeah, $30 is crazy low, but if you save up some more, apparently (I don't own it, but a producer friend does and he LOVES it) the Miroslav Philharmonik 2 CE is very much worth it, and would likely cover 90% of what you'd want from an orch set.

$149 at least from Sweetwater -> https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Miroslav2CE--ik-multimedia-miroslav-philharmonik-2-ce-orchestral-software-instrument-download

Pluginboutique might have a deal sometime on it. I should also say that it's my next planned purchase, as I'm in the market for a new symphonic/orch sample set. I'm no longer using Logic, and my Kirk Hunter plugin is in EXS24 format (which is Logic's proprietary sampler) :negative:

This is a good overview video (especially with the FF12 comparison :3:) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXNiE7DKzIg

Note that it's a collaboration between different sample developers (I def noticed some Strezov stuff) so sections might be hard to mix together, it's not a broad strokes library as it's meant to be used with notation software. Still, there's everything in there.

Oh right, $30 can also buy you a month of Composer Cloud, with Hollywood Orchestra Gold included. It's pretty good but EW's proprietary Play engine is a massive resource hog, you'll be bouncing tracks left and right.

Here's an Ozone question:

Is it better to mix 'quieter' into it and use it to bring up overall volume, or to mix 'louder' and lower the input gain?

I get this is probably subjective but was curious how people do it.

I tend to have my instrument busses tickling the yellow but as soon as I put Ozone on it all sounds smushy even on it's default settings.

I would also like to know the answer to this question. When I first tried using Ozone, I would go into it quieter and try to let Ozone bring the levels up but I felt like this never got me to the loudness I was looking for. But then on the opposite end, I had the same problem as you where going into it too hot made it sound smushy. I have tried to find a balance between the two but still feel like it is mostly trial and error.

It's weird because Izotope are so good with their documentation and mixing guide pdfs etc but nowhere does it simply say something along the lines of 'this will probably work well if your input RMS is X'.

Again, I know it'll vary depending on a billion factors such a genre, tempo, even DAW but a ballpark would be nice as I normally intend to strap Ozone on the masterbuss for my silly demos.
