Captain Foo posted:Programming in proportional sounds awful it's actually incredibly good. proportional fonts are much easier to read than monospaced ones in general, and that applies to things in code too. the only potential downside is if your coding style uses some godawful tabular layout. which it shouldn't, because they suck. but even in the sad case that you are stuck with one of those, you just have to run the autoformatter on every commit to fix it up for your backwards colleagues.

consolas is a really good font. all the microsoft c fonts are good. wish they’d apply the same attention to aesthetics and detail to windows 10 but I guess we aren’t allowed pretty things any more

i have ligatures turned on in vschode with fira code i used to like inconsolata but the rendering is terrible. it’s like macos style antialiased which is terrible on my res vs others which obey the pixel grid i guess the fonts decisions to do one or the other are inside the font file right? a font deciding how to render at small sizes is more complex that initially imagined, compared to large sizes where it kinda doesn’t matter 🤔

the rainbow brackets plugin i found for visual studio has an extra feature where if you hold ctrl for a second it will highlight the block that the cursor is currently in and holy god drat that is fantastic
