https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imnpwCRn36k

Inja works wayyyyyyyyyy better as a DNB MC here than MC GQ did in that S.P.Y set posted above IMO

e: I think I'm enjoying this so much because parts of it remind me heavily of MSX FM in Grand Theft Auto III, which was some of my first ever exposure to DNB

This Urbandawn bootleg of The Beatles' Come Together has a filthy drop and I feel like it would be a pretty decent introduction to DNB for someone who's new to the genre considering it's a rework of a song everyone's heard.

I'm amazed the Drum and Bass show on BBC Radio 1 is hosted by a guy from Toronto.

I hate the vocal diva tracks he seems to love playing.

He's back in town for a bit and played an impromptu set at our local Sunday night weekly, Church. I'm glad I went out to that one. Rene is a really nice guy too, we chatted for a while. I love how small this global scene really is.

Absolutely! I've tried to get multiple people into it (my ex, former bandmates, several friends, Uber riders, etc.) and I don't think it ever took, but that's fine because it feels more like I'm part of this exclusive club. It's obviously not because Hospitality events in Europe sell out, but where I am, there's not much of a scene at all and it feels like I'm one of the few in the area who's in the know.

It's crazy because there's a fairly sizable electronic music scene here, but next to none of it is DNB. There's even a fairly large electronic music and hip-hop festival here every year, but they book zero DNB artists. When they've asked for suggestions of artists to book on Facebook before, I've mentioned several DNB artists that play festivals including festivals in the US, but I guess that's always fallen on deaf ears.

Oh well. I got to see Dieselboy at a small, intimate venue here a couple years ago and that owned. Also got to see Pendulum here 10 years ago. And I would've gotten to see The Prodigy here this month, but alas :smith:

I've been well spoiled here in Perth, West Aus as we've had a burgeoning D&B scene for over a decade now (Although tbh I've drifted away from it in recent years).

Is Central/Eastern Europe the D&B mecca I've imagined it to be? There's some extraordinary pockets of talent out there, especially in the Netherlands. I wanna retire and move to Utrecht so I can see wicked shows hosted by Blackout every weekend.

Edit: btw if you're a fan of jump-up Heist has finally dropped an album: Iacon (LDDR115). I quite like it, text-book dirty jump-up:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mscVPz09Yk0

Also a fun teaser he did for the same track:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQQJOxcW30Y

Honestly it's kind of crazy as Heist has been a producer since the very early 00s and dropped heaps of EPs and singles but only now has he released an album. I also very much respect the work he did running an academy to teach production and mastering, all the while still dropping the odd EP or two.

Dieselboy's a good dude. We put on an Ohm Resistance Showcase in Brooklyn a few years back, and he showed up, DJed for funsies between our band sets, and hung out at our Airbnb afterward to talk about Twin Peaks and music production.

Also, KJ Sawka is the nicest person I've met in the scene, and I rarely meet anyone who isn't nice, so that's saying a lot.

Holy crap, I just pulled the trigger on a ticket to Outlook Festival.

This is literally the first vacation I've ever taken in my adult life (I'm 31) and I'm nervous as hell, but I'm glad I did it - such a stacked lineup and apparently it's the last year they're holding it at Fort Punta Christo in Croatia. I hope I don't gently caress this up and get stranded or anything.

Outlook Festival is fantastic so far.

The Pula Coloseum - apparently the most-left-intact ancient Roman Colliseum - was a beautiful venue for the opening concert. Hazardous, though - lots of steep steps and damaged rocks probably twisted a few peoples' ankles. Also the intake line was a shitshow, given that there is only one 2m-wide entrance to the colliseum at the top, it was quite a bottleneck.

Also while d&b fans worldwide are here and largely great people, I witnessed some brutally degenerate behaviour from some Birmingham chavs late last night (while I was partaking in the less-degenerate behaviour of drinking beers in a playground). These two guys must have had a disagreement with their can driver because they started brawling with him in the park. He was bloodied but he took both of them on quite well, but it ended with him procuring something from his car's boot (buddy said it was a gun but I didn't see it well enough) and the chavs bolting down the street.

Don't gently caress with Croatian cab drivers.

I'm about to get on a boat to catch Randall, Killa P, Sam Binga, Lush and Calculon.

Further observations from Outlook Festival:
- The Moat is the coolest stage I've ever been in
- It may have been the space, but the Sinai Sound System was hands-down the most bassweight I've ever felt.
- The Void Sound System, while not quite as bassy as Sinai, is the clearest crispiest system I've ever heard. PK Sound back home are good but they cannot hold a candle to Void.
- There are a lot of stray cats in Pula, and one of them is in love with me because I fed her some mortadella, not unlike a festival girl to drugs. I don't know anything about that though.

Outlook is officially over and I'm back in Toronto - jetlagged and sick. It was a wild ride. TBH I kind of went in blind, without really planning my way around the festival or particularly set on seeing any one performer. But here are some of the highlights, from what I remember:
- Opening concert in the Coloseum. What a venue! Shy FX murdered it, brought out lots of guest vocalists (including a somewhat-self-indulgent UK Apache). Loyle Carner was good, very hype UK Hip-Hop (surprisingly not really on the Grime side either). Andy C was a bit disappointing though, I've seen him tons of times and he didn't do anything particularly interesting, just the same old commercial tunes that bring back some bad memories.
- Last Planet Transatlantic Boat Party. There's a reason this company is killing it in the Toronto scene at the moment. Randall, Lush, Calculon, and more, all great - on a boat! I got some cool footage with the 360-degree camera that I'm gonna give to our pro photog to include in his video montage (he was flyibg a drone, too).
- Dispatch takeover (Black Barrel, Nymfo, etc). Honestly I can't remember if this was at the Garden stage or the Clearing but it was mental. Black Barrel can do a backflip.
- 1985 takeover (Lenzman, Skeptical, DBridge I think). Same as above, can't remember where but it was tiiiiite.
- Goldie at the Clearing. This is funny because he's not a very technical DJ, every time I've seen him he messes up but it doesn't matter because his selection is fire.
- Critical takeover (Kasra, Enei etc.) On the last night This one I knew was at the Garden. It rained but the crowd was massive.
- Some Grime & Garage acts I don't know the names of, mostly in the Moat.

I have some pictures and video from my phone up on my Instagram, @zed_operations. Will post the Last Planet official photo/video recap when it's out, too.
