Jobbo_Fett posted:To ally with people online you had to hit the "F" key... or maybe the "A" key? Either way, it was a simple button press. Legitimately could never get it to work for me though. The AI always preferred to fight it out at all times. Notably, if you allied with an AI it wouldn't fire on you, but it would still try to run over your infantry if they were nearby. And it had no qualms with parking a mass of its troops in your base and killing your dudes under their treads.

They would totally *act* like they wanted to attack you, they just couldn't do it (directly). This included sending masses of tanks and troops to your base that just sat there and did nothing once they arrived.

Oh, if you think INI editing can do some ridiculous poo poo in this game, just wait until we get to the next in the series.

I haven't made it to the end of the video yet, but it's awesome to see under the hood of this game. The map editor I had back in the day didn't do triggers, so while it was fun making cool looking maps, all the scripting of the campaign was black magic to me.

Is really interesting how advanced some of the triggers were for the time, especially the expansions, I was pretty amazed at some of the things Westwood pulled off with them. Still, really, really looking forward to TS/Firestorm, as that one and RA2/YR were the two C&C games I played the most out of all of them and TS especially is one of my favorites, and was where I really learned all about rules.ini fun.

That Tanya FMV using in-game sound effects was a nice touch. It suggests that's just what the Red Alert universe sounds like.

Finally reached the end of that map editor video ![]() Regarding the timer triggers, the times are given in one-tenth minutes, so a value of 10 means one minute, a value of 5 means 30 seconds, 300 is 30 minutes. One tenth minute is 6 seconds.

What is this "infantry" that you speak of? I only understand the words "mammoth" and "tank" in that order, and occasionally the word "MiG."

I haven’t played this Red Alert, but I really love 2 and 3 and a defunct mod for 3 that had some great lore as an expansion of the world. So it’s interesting to see how the series started.

My experience with the skirmish AI in RA was always that if you build air, it builds air. If you never build air, the AI never builds air either. And yes, if you have lost all your conyards, then crates have a very high chance of giving you an MCV. nielsm fucked around with this message at 07:40 on May 30, 2019 |

France gets a ROF buff because they have a hardon for autoloaders maybe? I dunno USSR was basically cheating in skirmish/MP. 10% discount on everything can be huge

Skirmish really felt like it just wasn't fully implemented - not sure if there were time constraints but I'd put my money on that. Crates were super fun and mysterious, though! Cash wise I have a feeling that map might have been a bit better with far fewer players on it? Good job though, I would have got rolled hard by an infantry rush or something. Anyway, it really feels like Red Alert plus its expansions had decent pacing: at this point I feel satisfied, probably wanting a little more but also that it didn't overstay its welcome. Now that we're going forawd into the second generation of C&C games, I'll really miss the near-future/alt-history aesthetic that TD and RA have. Namely that there's a decent mix of "real world" and sci-fi tech: I'm sure it's a personal taste thing but I feel like a lot comes out of picking and choosing where to add the crazy tech stuff so that it still feels special rather than becoming mundane. TD had a great cocktail of military cool (cf. modern warfare games etc.) with tiberium, the rapid-construction tech and EVA underlying it, and a few special things like the obelisk and stealth tank to spice it up. Red Alert had the same sort of thing going on where your bread and butter is the slick TD experience of "what if you could roll into an area and set up a functioning tank-producing base within minutes". Klepacki's soundtrack feels like it mirrors this, something about it just feels grounded rather than trying to sound too sci-fi all the time. Without going into spoiler territory, Tiberian Sun has one glaring thing missing from it. I'll point it out in due time...

If I'm remembering correctly the Skirmish AI's always build two power plants before building the Refinery. I remember setting the starting cash to about 2k and having free reign over the map while a bunch of impotent AIs ran out of cash before the refinery completed....
