I haven't read Punpun since I was literally also seventeen and also dealing with depression and also dealing with a girl I liked and also dealing with the death of a parent so uhhhh I definitely liked and related to it then! I'm not sure if I'd actually like it now, but I'm kind of okay never finding out. Still a Nijigahara stan I ought to read Reiraku one day, an apparently ludicrously uncut version of Asano’s bleak worldview that teeters on disaster at all times but ultimately wraps around to becoming a good manga in the end

Man, I remember when I was coming off reading Solanin to when someone commented "Hey, there's this one manga from the same fella called Oyasumi Punpun!".Endorph posted:the first half of punpun is pretty good. the second half is not. It was at around the same time I discovered the works of Kengo Hanazawa.

And the artwork is amazing, of course.   And of course there's that very Asano-ish feeling of "this is going to end very poorly for everyone involved, isn't it?" throughout. There's not enough gritty sci-fi in modern manga, and even DDDDDDDD is more frequently about the daily lives of its characters than anything else, but I like the sci-fi/alien elements and the way Asano takes the opportunity to make a whole bunch of social commentary through the way he shows humans reacting to the situation.

There are parts in the second half I don’t like mostly on a visceral level. It’s still my favourite manga though. I feel coming back to it with the official translation and having lived and met people who fit some of the archetypes, I understood Sachi and Aiko a lot more than when I read the scans. The series doesn’t allow you to sympathize with Aiko all that much because of the framing device being from Punpun’s perspective. Sachi still being hurt and struggling but fighting her damndest is so much more relatable now for me too. And I enjoyed Seki and Shimizu’s parts more too. The worst I can say is that it has always been misery porn from the very beginning. It just was more willing in the beginning to let there be some hope like with Yuichi facing his past with Midori. As well the main thing is it tries to make you see inside Punpun’s mind which is why when he truly is being an rear end in a top hat you see yourself having done lesser/similar/worse versions of his fuckups and feel a bit sick for having been there.

I finished Symphogear AXZ (as well as its shorts) and thus am caught up. After the relative disappointment of GX, AXZ was more or less a return to form. A lot of this came down to the villains being orders of magnitude better this time around and the stakes being a bit more clear. The characterization for the returning characters remained strong (it does feel like they are struggling to think of things to do with Tsubasa still, but I suspect that won't be a problem for the next season) and the fights were among the best directed/choreographed. My main problem with the season is that the back 1/3 is a little weak; I was initially smitten with Shinichiro Miki voicing the big bad but it quickly became apparent that having the actually interesting villains in Cagliostro and Prelati seemingly killed off early left too big of a void and made a lot of the endgame not land quite as strongly. And while it is a single line that doesn't matter that much, having a reference to "Nazi Germany Eugenics Research" without any sort of self-awareness of what that is implying was awkward. Thankfully, the actual final episode after all of that was both cool and set up some stuff for the final(?) season that I am very excited for. My season rankings would probably go G > Season 1 > AXZ > GX. G remains my favorite because FIS were the best villains the show has had and there's a strong emotional core start-to-finish for the cast. Season 1 is just a solid overall show, I guess I don't really like the "Hibiki has to hide her job from Miku" but it pays off in the end; this was also the season that probably had the best bits of characterization for Tsubasa. GX's villains kind of suck and the entire season feels like one of those non-canon One Piece movies that you'd see where the heroes have to work with some random kid that's caught up in some nonsense (sorry Elfnein, at least you got do more stuff in AXZ). IMO watch Symphogear.
