i think it depends on how it's done. if you were associated with the chinese natsec apparatus in anyway a visit from the national police for an interview (read: not being thrown in an unmarked van) to discuss stuff is reasonable and i wouldn't begrudge the Chinese government at all for keeping tabs on americans with relations to the american security apparatus while they are in china

China would shoot itself in the foot, once other countries pick up the slack on rare earth mining and processing there'd be no reason to go back to China once they reopen the doors. The only reason no one else is doing it is no one else has invested into the infrastructure it would literally just be shuttering a currently extremely strong industry, a total, irreversible, self own

Or is it just that, as you say, they invested in extracting them while others didn't?

it seems like it would be extremely difficult for anyone to invest the capital and build up sufficient capacity to compete with china, and its not like they'd stop mining/refining in the meantime aussieland has mining companies but who else is competing on the necessary scale? not to mention that components made in the US with rare earths are going to be likely shipped back to china for manufacturing into a final product

Or is it just that, as you say, they invested in extracting them while others didn't? It's mostly the latter, yeah. They invested heavily into extraction and processing starting in the 1980s, so they flooded the market with cheap rare earths and ended up dominating it (keep in mind that this was around the time electronic devices started becoming commonplace). After that the situation for manufacturers who needed rare earths was that they could either wait a few years for someone else to spend a shitload of money opening new mines and building up processing capacity or they could just buy some from China right away. They did the latter, of course.

the only reason american telcos are eager for 5g is so they can further neglect all physical connectivity to the end user and end up having home internet access regulated under the even more lax wireless laws

# ? May 30, 2019 07:41 |

I think I saw an article that there are concerns over 5g having problematic interactions with weather forecasting because the 24 Ghz frequency is close enough to the 23.8 Ghz range where water vapor is detected

genericnick posted:What even is the point of 5G? Am I the only one who can live without streaming 4k porn on my 6'' devices? in sane countries it means getting broadband-speed internet out to places without running fiber optic cable, which means universal internet access at very cheap rates.

R. Guyovich posted:in sane countries it means getting broadband-speed internet out to places without running fiber optic cable, which means universal internet access at very cheap rates. There are tons of unrealistic expectations when it comes to 5G. To get 5G to provide speeds that are significantly higher than what LTE can provide you need high frequencies, which only carry a signal over extremely short distances. So carriers will still need to build out fiber-optic networks. Which they aren't going to do in rural areas. In a sane country, connecting all those households directly would still be the sane thing to do instead of doing another half-measure, if that at all. Also, what American carriers like to do is to simply rebrand LTE to "5G", just like AT&T does now (and just like they did back when they rebranded HSPA+ as 4G). Consumer protection/truth in advertising doesn't exist in the US.
