Matt didn't bring up the weirdest part of the Heimlich story, which is that he did a bunch of no oversight trials in Ethiopia where he injected malaria into HIV patients to see if it helped

Spoeank posted:I had to stop. It's so good but the pictures he paints are chilling As the show goes on he talks about the feedback he's getting from people about how depressed/scared the podcast is making them, and there's a notable adjustment in the show. It gets, I dunno how to describe it, more clinical, a little less darkly speculative. Broad strokes of what would happen as opposed to "here is what's going to happen to you". It's most noticeable during the genocide episode, where it feels like he's going out of his way to avoid really getting into what that would be like in America. Plus there's more focus on positive stuff people are doing now. Ireland could instead, for example, draw from our own unique radical traditions to fight for the rights of those who do not own property. Instead of lazily adopting the liberal cosmopolitanism of Silicon Valley, we could look out to the great cultures of the world for inspiration, to those elements that have withstood the marketisation and Americanisation of everything. We could use the best of what technological advancement could offer – greater leisure time and less work would be a good start. But the first step to understanding, before we can have any hope of changing, our current predicament will be acknowledging that the long 19th century is indeed over but that what is replacing it is not an egalitarian vision but the failing, globalised American vision of progressive individualism in culture and economics – the illusion of choice and freedom in a time of greater alienation, atomisation and diminishing expectations for the many and unlimited enrichment for the few.

Apropos of nothing, I noticed that Matt's "Monster Fash" episode got a lot of comments on Patreon, and the ones that weren't just saying "cool" were quibbling over how to define fascism. I still don't understand why this has consumed so much energy among centrists and leftists, nor why so many of them, even the leftists, want to define fascism as an aesthetic instead of a political-economic structure.

There is literally no reason to bring it up, nor imply its been imported to the country by decadent foreign elites unless she's finds it objectionable. Its an absolutely bizarre position to defend.

Fascist / totalitarian aesthetic has been a thing for decades, and fascists do like to blur the line between aesthetic and ideology / reality, so I don't blame people for being confused.

It's depressing to realize, but when it comes to mainstreaming ideology and getting into power the fash are a lot better at it. Now, of course, they get a lot of help from the state, but they're the ones with the police and courts right now.

On the one hand, I agree with Matt that even if there's a valid argument that the Keynesian military-industrial complex is fascist, that broadens the term to the point of being useless as a heuristic. On the other hand, it is a valid argument, and I think there's been a deliberate push to downplay and occlude any similarity between our late capitalist regime and those of the fascists. With all due respect to Arendt and Eco, this leads to a lot of people going on, and on, and on about the aesthetics. Thanks to the Trump campaign, there's a bit of a market for glib charlatans to make evocative statements about fascism that don't actually identify or diagnose anything, but just mystify everyone further. (I guess it started after people got bored with the "Does Trump have narcissistic personality disorder?" articles.) It's ironic how their audience can understand that fascism isn't just a moment in history that could never recur, but remain obsessed with the particular trappings--the uniforms, slogans, posters, etc. Everyone has an "I know it when I see it" concept of fascism per Star Wars, but they don't ever think about imperialism. Why do we focus on just Angela Nagle when there’s a whole bunch of “pro-life Democrats” and similarly bullshit positions? VICE News Tonight interviewed a Democratic state Senator from Louisiana, and how she talked about her anti-abortion/anti-choice beliefs came off as both opportunistic in respect to votes and overtly religious. But she also helped to pass the abolishment of the death penalty. I certainly would like to see her replaced but could a pro-choice Democrat or a socialist who made abortion a part of their national health plan win in that district? What about the alternative? An insane conservative who would vote against any of the good bills that the Democrat would have voted for? It really is damned if you and damned if you don’t. EDIT: what I’m trying to say is why focus on this pundit when there are folks doing real damage within?

It's weird that Chapo goes on and on and on about understanding dog whistles and knowing who your enemy is but if you call out someone for say....repeatedly writing articles and giving talks tying sexual liberation and self expression to 'corruptive identity politics and Social Justice idiocy that poisons the left' which is a decades old bullshit argument made by the kind idiots that want a more 'socially conservative leftist movement' for being probably kind of a lovely person you get scolded big time. Lady's a British pundit and writer who's big into Germaine Greer and has for years written pieces lamenting all this self expression and identity poliics that draw leftist focus away from where it should be. She's your average Mumsnet poster. It's some really obviously reactionary bullshit barely masked as fighting for 'the real left'. Chapo is more focused and runs a smaller group, but yeah for the most part. The biggest diff is that TF is made up of people that are almost all younger than Felix. While I get a fair bit of their references, I have no clue if people over 35 can listen to it without turning to dust.

Why do you care so deeply about reading a reactionary agenda into some woman on twitter if you cannot articulate it without an essay on the subtext of her writing, instead of just reading the text? She wants an alternative to neoliberal faux-social justice as the country moves from traditional catholic values, you have to be extremely uncharitable to think she is asking for a return to those values and not socialism. Nagles most culturally relevant contribution is a critical exposé on anime-Nazis. She's a poster, and terminally online, you should not have to work so hard to prove that she is a chud. Even if she were one, why should people care? She's a medium.com level celebrity at best; the obsession with lefty female podcasts personalities, and the general trend of proscribing them regressive or "strasserite" agendas is weird as gently caress.

hey people, the technique for choking victims taught by the red cross now is a combination of 5 back blows and 5 abdominal thrusts. I don't remember how you do the heimlich, but for the abdominal thrusts you place one hand write about the choking victim's belly button and thrust upward to hopefully get a kind of vomit reaction out of them. don't do this to someone unless they're choking or they want to vomit. You probably don't want to try this unless you have someone show you the correct hand placement, but if someone's choking and you're desperate it might help. that's my PSA for Chapo listeners hope you enjoyed it.
