To me the only thing really identifiable about Lois is what she's wearing when she's at work, otherwise without those clothes or missing other context she's just some brunette. Her and Betty Brant could switch places and I'd never know. it's pretty funny reading the page after and watching people get confused about pretty much everyone involved in that comic aside from clark, who is such a stereotypical attractive white dude that he names the trope. perhaps superman designs are just dumb???

I seriously want to listen to a recording of someone pronouncing "Squirrel" in a way that doesn't rhyme with "girl." I know how you could say "squirrel" in a way that doesn't rhyme with "girl" and people would still know you're saying "squirrel" but I think it's an affectation very few people actually use.

In Britain, that's just how you say it. "Squir-el". If you have a heavy Glaswegian accent it might still rhyme with "girrul", though!

I donno, after listening to multiple videos of Brits saying squirrel casually (as opposed to enunciated dialect demonstrations) I would say they sound similar enough to be considered a rhyme for all but the most formalized poetry. Definitely fine for noting the assonance in a comic book name. https://youtu.be/bDQ96osJqbo for a humor inclusion.

Squirrel has an "ehl" sound at the end and girl has an "url" sound at the end, I hope this clears up the confusion about why they don't rhyme.

mercenarynuker posted:Wrap it up, Britishailures, we're even better than you at your own dialect I don't think you read the article! It actually says that the "Americans speak like 18th century English people" factoid that's been going around lately is a myth. The key point of similarity is that most American accents are rhotic, while a lot of English accents that aren't rhotic now were rhotic in the 18th century. Rhotic pronunciation is one small aspect of accent formation, and many British accents are still rhotic. The actual bit of linguistics the clickbaity "Americans sound like 18th century English people" stuff is using as a (thin) source is some fascinating mid-2010s work by David Crystal, who used hidden rhymes in Shakespeare to make a very convincing case for the Elizabethan London accent having been rhotic. In his reconstructions, it sounds quite similar to the modern West Country accent, certainly much more so than it does to most American accents.
