I wouldn’t put it past HBO to commission some more hyper-realistic dramas based on real-life disasters given how well this series has gone down. Coming in 2020: Challenger, perhaps? Bhopal?

I dunno if there are any that can match Chernobyl in terms of the human drama surrounding the relief efforts and coverup or how scary fallout as a concept can be. Chernobyl was this ongoing thing that lasted for a long time and is still ongoing today. Something like Challenger is almost over in an instant.

Forgot who it was though. the guy in the first episode who held the door open for the other two guys, started bleeding spontaneously, and was last seen having a last cigarette in a hallway on the verge of death apparently survived for a while after the accident, like several years (the other two guys were mega hosed though)

They should follow up with Fukishima because the company running that plant pretty much stonewalled the world on just how much radiation is leaking into the Pacific. Also I vote for Centralia because of the stupidity of a coal mining town stuffing garbage in abandoned but not striped bare coal mines.

That was amazing!  The chorus/montage at the end got me...amazing work.  Echoing the sentiment that this was the kind of horror I wanted from The Terror: real life can be scary enough... Saving the shot of the actual explosion until the final episode and after all the courtroom drama was a masterful move. I don't think it would have been as impactful if they did it first episode.

This show gave Dyatlov such a villain edit that you'd think he personally shot the writer's dog. They could have done a lot more to show the pressures on him. Also, unrelated, but in the epilogue I was completely unprepared for actual Dyatlov to be hot. What the gently caress.

Not the first to say this, but goddamn. Regardless of everything or even if some of it was true, that portrayal of Dyatlov was loving vicious and dickish. But, more importantly for a TV show, very well acted. e: though I do think maybe there's a chance it's being portrayed this way because it maybe represents how he's being portrayed in court? has there ever been a good television series done on the BP deepwater horizon oil spill and the fallout of that massive debacle? I feel like that was basically the culmination of the rot at the heart of capitalism, a completely preventable disaster that utterly destroyed the lives of thousands of people, a cover up of the facts to try and reduce their liability by the company responsible, and a predictable miscarriage of justice to top it all off where nobody went to jail or saw any meaningful consequences for their actions. I think we can do better than the Mark Wahlberg movie HBO

They were standing on the bridge immediately after the explosion and downwind of the fire. The reactor divers had the significant advantages of going in some time after the initial blast and suits specifically designed to protect against radiation. The water helped, too; Chernobyl's reactor used light (nonradioactive) water, and so it acted as a radiation insulator rather than a source.

Show was powerful. I was choking a bit at the end there. I find the theme especially poignant when regarding the oncoming climate catastrophy on our doorstep: I feel it gives a glimpse into how institutions will react. We're all hosed.

Good god, the 'chat' between Scherbina and Legasov...then that *amazing* scene between Charkov and Legasov in the 'drain room.' Charkov played a calmly furious apparatchik perfectly. He wasn't angry that Legasov told the truth - he was angriest that he'd gotten such a bad *read* on him (hence that attempt at 'deconstructing' Legasov's past), told *his* superiors as much, and knew that was going to reflect poorly on him. He was very clearly a man who had not been forced to smell his own bullshit in quite a long time, and Legasov forced him to take a good deep whiff of it. "I'm not going to kill you - I'm going to make an *example* of you." Since we all knew he committed suicide, I couldn't help but think of the "you've no more fear; you're completely free" scene/part of V for Vendetta. And you're all wrong - the next step in the cycle of  is making a series on horrible radiation experiments that were performed on people in the "free" world, with the cold, calculating information at the end almost always saying:"No one was ever held to account for doing this - so-and-so maybe got some pittance of compensation/reparations or their extended family/descendants got a half-hearted apology decades later from people who weren't even alive when this took place.
