Not purely SA-related, but this dead website is where the the Barkley 2 saga is finally being put to rest. For those not in the know: back in the late aughts, a funny RPG Maker game called Barkley, Shut Up and Jam! Gaiden captured the internet's imagination with its purposely bad/stolen assets, hilarious and weird joke's and surprisingly fun combat. Then, during the height of the video game Kickstarter craze, the team raised a bunch of money for a real, commercial sequel. For the curious, details are in the OP of this thread. Long story short, the dev team only offered very intermittent updates, missed the release date by years, then went completely silent in 2016 or so. You know, standard failed Kickstarter stuff. Because SA is now a graveyard stalked by the ghosts of aughties humor and humorists, our thread eventually became the only place in the internet still talking about Barkley 2. And even that was in the form of a few shitposts a week. Then, a few days ago, one of the devs showed up and dropped some details on what's been happening behind the scenes. Now the rest of the team has showed up to share war stories (except one guy who refuses to admit the project is dead) about the hilariously over-engineered systems that killed the project and various ideas, lovely and brilliant, the team had. It's worth a look if you want to see how badly game dev can go wrong with stuff like copy-pasted armies of an NPC called Dark Draker and using a baby crying as a placeholder sound. Big Mad Drongo has a new favorite as of 18:06 on Jun 5, 2019 |
