So, uh, it looks like there are a few Mazdaspeed3s from 2007-2008 on my local Craigslists, with reasonable mileage on them and they look to be well maintained. Any thoughts on whether one of them might be a worthwhile purchase?

For instance there's a 2007 Sport with 76k miles for $9k, a 2008 GT with 39k miles and a few upgrades that someone's looking to sell for $11k, and a 2013 Touring with 99k advertised at $11.5k

Then again, maybe it's a dumb impractical vehicle that my wife would be wise never to let me buy.

Where do you live? The 07 seems high priced. I've seen them for under $5K pretty often with similar miles.

I live in North Carolina.

Someone else near me is looking to sell (again on Craigslist) a 2008 Mazdaspeed3 GT with 150k miles for $6500, also. That seems like a lot of miles, though I guess it's about normal considering the age of the car.

I'm a lovable meme.

I drove the 2019 Mazda 3 today.

The riding is really, really smooth and nice. I had the 2.0 engine (there is no 2.5l engine here), and acceleration isn't stellar by any means (~10s 0-100). It's fine.

The seating, armrests and so forth are very nice. I did get a cramp in my back. But I suppose that was more to me sitting awkwardly because I was having fun. The last Mazda I drove felt very close and didn't give me any pains. Odd: I did not find any AC vents for the back passengers. gently caress them I guess, this is a driver-centric car.

The interior materials and design has been talked about until death. It's really nice. I felt like the car was spoiling me. Compared to the hard plastic I have, I suppose you'll now need wet wipes to clean it instead of just a brush. The demo car had leather. Didn't like that.

Infotainment is very good. Part of that is due to the Bose sound system of course, but the controls and the screen are pretty nice. I didn't get Android Auto to work, but that was my own fault. Should have asked how to turn it on and couldn't figure it out on the way (read it later: hold the home button for a second ). But the system itself is all very logical. Part of the problem might have been that I connected my phone to the port on the dash. A Mazda video that I just watched suggests that you should use the port in the center console. I think the other way around would have been more useful, but hey you do you.

Bose sound seems to be lovely. I cannot really describe it well. But by comparison, my car, and the other cars I know, sound like the speakers are pointed into random directions. The Mazda/Bose system sounds almost like you're wearing head phones. It's great, really. You do have to give up the spare tire though, as I found the sub woofer in the trunk under the carpet.

Driver assistance systems were a bit confusing to me. I managed to turn some of them on and off, I think, but I don't really know why. That was easier in the Toyota. Parking sensors and cameras are very nice and usable, however.

The HUD is really loving nice. Looks crisp to me, isn't distracting, and it displays navigation information. Didn't look at the screen once and could still find my way easily.

The blind spot is not as bad as I figured it would be, given the enormous C pillar. It is still considerable though, and there was one moment where I might have cut someone off because I did not see them in the mirror and through the window. Curiously, at no point did I notice the blind spot monitor doing anything. This is a little worrisome. I did not do actual tests to see how large the blind spot is in reality, but I think the blind spot monitor should really be part of the base package here.

What left me with mixed feelings is the caged feeling inside the car. All the pillars are huge, all the roof is black. A corolla, and certainly the CUVs and SUVs that everyone rolls around in, probably feel like green houses by comparison. I suppose I can get used to that.

Here's the interesting bit: I could theoretically order the Skyactiv X engine right now. It hasn't shown up on the web site yet, but the dealer says he's taking orders, and they'll be delivered october-november. The regular engines take just as long. The price premium didn't look bad, either - less than EUR1000. This might vary a lot between regions though; part of the (variance in) prices are caused by emissions and related taxes. At my fuel prices and mileage, I'd save 310 a year, thus the upgrade would pay for itself. Only downside is that I'd be an early adopter.

Should I do it or not?

So what determines oil interval, oil weight/type, or filter? Last order I was sent a 20k filter, running pretty standard 0w oil though (maybe 7500, don’t have it in front me just now). I’m going to change now anyway due to how dirty the oil looks off the dipstick, bit I’m hoping I’m not waiting too long.

In this style, 10/6
In my experience, quality of oil and oil filter makes a big difference in oil life. I’ve seen cheap dino oil through a Fram filter look bad after 3k miles, and I’ve seen full synthetic through a good oil filter look fine at 5k miles.

Personally, I always change oil between 5k and 7.5k miles depending on the vehicle. Based on the ‘oil life’ meter in modern cars, this is probably excessive, but I’m stuck in my old ways I guess. I’ve gotten blank stares at the Honda dealer as to why I want the oil changed at 6k miles when the oil life meter says it’s at like 60%. :corsair:

Are newer cars “smart” enough to really do any checking on oil life? I always figured it was just a countdown timer on miles. Mine was never set up and I never thought to mess with it, even though a countdown could be useful for my bad memory.

If you can afford it and like to tinker, what's the harm? If you really want to get into figuring out the answer to that question just take a sample and send it to Blackstone for analysis when you do your interval.

When I changed mine in Ruby at 119k, I went with Redline synthetic and a top notch filter. Probably overkill but I will have you know sometimes pride of ownership supercedes good sense. The previous owner did Mobile 1 synthetic and then Redline so I know the engine is used to that oil. Call it a needless anthropomorphism of an inanimate hunk of metal but the butt dyno knows the difference.

I think newer cars have some sort of countdown using a calculation based on mileage, length of drives, etc. That could just be wishful thinking, though.

They use math based on driving conditions / your driving style. I don't know if any of them have any kind of sensor, yet.

It looks like the 2007 Mazdaspeed3 I mentioned earlier is still available, and it's in phenomenally good shape--looks brand new, and just over 76k miles. So I think I want to buy it to replace my '98 Ford Escort, maybe.

One big question, though, which might be a dealbreaker: does it have an aux audio input? I can't tell from the listing or photos.

There should be an aux input in the center console/armrest thing, or whatever you call it. I doubt it changed between 2007 and the 2008.5 refresh.

There was some noise on the Aux input that hooked into the CD changer port on my 05 regular rear end 3 but I put that down to the very cheap adapter.

they're cheap, you just need to plug it in, inline. It keeps the audio from buzzing with the engine speed (alternator whine).

I get the buzz if I'm simultaneously charging my phone from the cig lighter. Will the ground loop isolator fix that?

Ah so the official abbreviations are MS3 and RA3.

Also, got new noises while driving today, right around 3000 RPM the engine sounds/feels like an old civic with a coffee can muffler. Don’t seem to lose power but kind of alarming to have show up suddenly. Thinking it might be related to the catalytic converter going sideways on me, not sure though. Mechanic advised to let that repair wait for now due to cost (over 1k easily), check engine light is not on currently and hasn’t come back recently. Figured maybe run code reader again anyway just to see?

I got some new tires for a 2014 Mazda3 recently and here's what I remember when originally researching what to go with:

Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 - Apparently the "softest" of the three in handling but probably the best overall value at non-sale prices.
Bridgestone Potenza RE980 A/S - Was the newest of the three at the time replacing the RE970 before it. I ultimately went this route because of a great sale price during a Firestone promo.
Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ - I don't think anyone had anything bad to say about this one but they're spendy.

There was a fourth one from Pirelli I but I can't remember the specific model. The RE980s I ended up with handle great but they're noisy and actually made a noticeable dent in fuel efficiency compared to the OEM tires. I got to take them out in winter conditions a handful of times and they suck on wet snow/slush. If that's something you have to deal with every winter you'll be better off with dedicated snow tires anyways.

I have a 2017 mazda in soul crystal red or w/e they call it. It has 16k miles.

There is already significant paint chipping on the front bumper, hood, and front wheel fenders. There is also paint flaking on the top of the hood where it meets the windshield, where there is no possible way to explain it through rough driving or whatever.

Is there a way to get Mazda to take care of this? The car is under warranty and I've read many people with this problem, but I also suspect they are going to tell me to eat poo poo.
