the interesting thing about pool, Rubin and Tracey is how much of an audience there is for far right views who insist they're left wingers. there's the same thing all over Reddit - gamergaters, incels etc who insist they are left wing while having a thoroughly far right worldview and media consumption. anecdotally I do have a couple friends who are the opposite, guys who fully subscribe to liberal or left wing views but consider themselves conservative, but that's not a thing on the web by and large.

It's overrepresented in the media because they are thirsty as gently caress for people who identify as left or socialist but are actually reactionary conservatives because it let's them appear unbiased while maintaining their bias. Fox values this so much that they have a stable of their own "Democrat unhappy with way party is going and how unfair they are to strong daddy" people like Harlan Hill to trot out It seems common online because people are cowards or not honest with themselves and would rather hastily patch together a political identity that falls apart with the slightest scrutiny

Is anyone trynig quick-and-dirty videos which exploit these patterns to create some kind of counter message? E.g. gaming -> SJWs are ruining gaming -> the right wing is gaming gamers, with 30 seconds of "Real talk folks - the videos about censorship and the death of gaming are made by a bunch of grifters who just want your money and to persuade you to keep voting for the people whose policies are keeping you poor and unhappy by dangling a single-issue carrot in front of you." I'd do it but  and I'm not cool enough.

Also, conversion stories are a big part of right wing culture, so they love "yoostabees" - people who claim they used to be leftists but then thing X happened and now they're 100% on board with Donald Trump's plan to Make America Great Again. People also really love to present (or imagine) themselves as broad-minded heterodox thinkers who can't be pinned down with a simple label, so they come up with these convoluted stories about their beliefs, because it's more interesting and self-flattering than saying "I'm just a bog-standard conservative."

The dude profiled in NYT said he got sucked in by Steve's self-help videos, which... is really really close to how cults work if not exactly how. He starts with real basic rear end advice, and then you think "oh, this guy must know what he's talking about" and then he complains about a popular thing and then he talks to some people who are a little out there and then he's talking about how women are destroying the west by copulating with brutes. You get funneled down from a guy telling you stuff like "set basic, concrete goals" to listening to hours of him talk about how angry birds is destroying civilization, you don't start there.

Any Unitarian Universalist churches near you should have a big emphasis on social justice as well. UU is churchy but not Christian, atheists are completely welcome in every aspect.
