probably because they wanted the game to have quest and dialog systems and that doesnt really jive with tactical gameplay.

Just finished Avernum 2 and that's tactical enough while having quests and dialogue.

Hey nice to see Pasty in the loop on this, thanks!

TTX is good and solid. I agree with Pasty that it could easily have been the game's combat and the game would have been orders of magnitude better for it. And maybe even done by now.

I'm as surprised as you are that you were not asked to help out on B2 itself. When I asked about it, I was told very specifically that you had said you had no interest in working on B2 itself, due to reasons regarding the hiring process and salary situation that was going on at the time. So this was pitched to me, and I think to everyone else, as a way to get some ToG and/or B2 support from someone who would love to help out but didn't want to work on the main game. Much of this was of course communicated in private messages and other 'back channels' while team-wide discussions about it were quickly and fiercely brushed away or moved to a corner so that no one could connect the dots.

Asking someone to spend 1,100 hours on what turned out to be a side minigame is frankly just a disaster. Good on you Pasty for actually tracking your hours! Deciding to dedicate resources to a side game when your main game is struggling was also a ridiculously questionable move, which we did question. Aside from what Pasty mentions of this actually being a huge time sink away from B2, it also involved other squad members, notably Frankie for art but also playtesting, trying to figure out how to get it into the game, quest stuff, etc.

Claiming this would be its own app game with its own revenue stream, which Pasty has surely been promised revenue percentages of but which there is no way for me to know because those deals were the exact opposite of transparent, is also another now-known-to-be-classic Liam deception tactic to get people to put in unpaid hours to accomplish his fever dream. Knowing Liam and what has come up so far from other corners, it sounds like the 2015 'shocker' of it not being released before B2 was actually always the plan, and also handled such a way as to pressure yet another person into spending more hours on B2 unpaid.

That’s complete and utter bullshit. 4chan wasn’t even around when this stuff was in full swing and I’ve met other kin IRL. I don’t doubt there were channers using it that way but people believing they’re animals and anime characters and “classical” furries were a thing before SA.

That's fair, "started" was the wrong way to put it, but I know they were responsible for it entering the internet's consciousness by making large numbers of fake accounts on tumblr, etc. and conflating it as much as possible with trans people in an attempt to mock them since I was a self-hating kid and saw them talking about how they did it.

They were in the internets consciousness way and eventually out of it again wayyyy before Tumblr was a thing. Plenty of weekend web stuff and awful links of the day before social media was even around. I’m not familiar with Tumblr as a community so I’ll take your word for it that there was a resurgence there.

I'm gonna be honest, I don't really get why the Gearbox DNF route is off the table.

Like, it sounds like enough of Barkley 2 is done that ToG could totally just polish up what's done, make some quick and dirty placeholder content to fill in the gaps, and just release it that way while being very upfront that the game is incomplete and unfinished (but that the alternative is no B2, period). I think people would prefer that to a cancellation, you know?

There’s no reason to do that when you can release the already feature-complete demo that reasonably represents the designers’ vision and what was accomplished to a polished state. Why lazarus it with unfunny jokes and poochie returning to his home planet?

Okay, one last cool thing, from the bball tactics guy (click here for his thoughts on all this).

Here's his development journal for bball tactics. Just to set expectations, this isn't a super professional design document done in powerpoint. It's just his scratch paper while he was working out problems, basically. Like anyone's personal notes, some of it is a bit impenetrable, but some of you might find it pretty cool like I did.
