YK is a big step down combat-wise from Yakuza 0 because it's a remake of an older game IIRC.
Most of the problems with the Kiwami combat system (or Kiwami in general) are completely separate from the jank in the original PS2 game and were introduced in the remake. They replaced the original combat with the fighting engine from Yakuza 0 and added some stuff like the Kiwami moves while giving all bosses a million HP and the ability to regenerate their health. In the original game, your attacks do a lot more damage and only the super special bonus boss has more than two health bars. Aside from that and the two Majima fights (where you're mostly fighting the targeting system), the combat isn't nearly as much of a slog as it is in Kiwami.

The developer of Brigador is a secret chud, don't give him money
So - I recently found out that Resonance of Fate was on steam and everyone told me it was really good! Now - on its original release I hated it and it seemed like I was the only person who hated it. Except replaying it now I'm starting to hate it for the exact same reasons I hated it originally, in the same spot, too. In the very first chapter you enter a little mini-dungeon thing that introduces a new armored type of gun-wielding enemy. So not only do your attacks just do no damage if they hit the armored bits - but these guys don't play by the rules. They charge up faster than you, every other hit will stun your guys or knock them out of their charge up, while shrugging off every attack you make. Meanwhile you have no real control over which part of them you hit. So if you've got a guy lined up to shoot him in the back? Well gently caress you because on a whim, the instant before you hit that attack button, he's going to just turn and shoot another party member and absorb all of your damage in his tiny shoulderpad.

Oh, and you fight like three to four of them at a time, with other enemies spiced in. So they're constantly shooting your team, constantly stunlocking them and the effort it takes to down a single one is far, far greater than the effort it takes for them to just turn and burn down all of your guys thanks to the fact that the enemies just don't playby the systems own rules and your party members have no AI, so while you go to attack someone they'll just sit there and take hits. Except enemies never stop, ever. They'll shoot clear through cover that stops your bullets dead, and they'll fire fast enough that if you get hit once, they'll be ready to fire again before you finish your hit animation.

EDIT: some hilarity I've noticed watching the enemies. Any time they're not actively shooting you, if it's your turn and you're trying to shoot them, they'll rotate to point their armor at you with dark souls two levels of facing the player. You can run out and watch an entire army of guys just rotate on the spot until they decide they want to shoot you to interrupt your attack.

These games, especially Nuclear Throne, remind me a lot more of classic arcade games than anything. You're supposed to play them in short bursts and they're meant to kill you quickly and be hard to finish. Whether this is good design seems to come down to personal preference, although sometimes you have some that stand out positively (Necrodancer, Spelunky) or negatively (Rogue Legacy, that Mega Man X roguelite nobody played that I think is called 20XX).

20XX got a lot more bearable later on but I think the damage was done, the sky levels were really hosed in particular because you basically had to do them first always or they would turn into nearly impassable laser hells guaranteed to end your run, they fixed that at now at least.

This is gonna be a kinda weird complaint, but somehow I can't really get into Outer Wilds just because its environments are weirdly unchill. When you start the game, everything's pretty lighthearted and relaxed, the NPCs are joking around, people are living in the middle of a pretty forest, there are cool precursor aliens with funky beards and pretty writings, and so on. The entire introduction, the aesthetic and atmosphere, just primes you for having a fun chill time among the stars just tooling about exploring poo poo.

But then you actually lift off, go to the other planets and... they're almost all horribly violent unpleasant places. One of them is constantly being bombarded by a moon spitting lava at it while huge chunks of its crust fall down into its hollow core. Another is a water planet caught in a neverending giant storm with constant tornadoes and supposedly terrible murderbeasts living down below the surface. The nice precursor aliens all seem to have met horrible ends. And that just kinda takes me right out of the atmosphere. This isn't a nice fascinating place to explore at all. It's a horrid place full of decay and entropy and I just want to get the hell out of there.

It's a pretty dumb complaint and more my own fault than the game's, but the whole thing just completely harshes my mellow in a way that makes me not really want to play. :v:

I've been replaying Heroes of Might and Magic 3 and the large map missions of the campaign really drag. The game makes it vague where you're actually supposed to be heading and just for comfort you have just quite not enough resources to pump out troops consistently. Except surprise! By the midgame the AI has thrown its largest force down your throat and barring scripted surprises you're now doing the world most depressing victory lap for anywhere in-between 5-20 minutes.

I love this game but my god :shepicide:

I never finished this game mostly because mass upgrading my guns whenever a new shop unlocked was too time consuming for me, although I did enjoy what I played of it. But the armored enemies I straight up don't remember. They sound like something you're supposed to deal with using molotovs, though. Or the sync attack or whatever it was called.

Yeah it's overall a pretty terrifying game, and the backstory you uncover is heavy and melancholy. I'm pretty sure the cozy aesthetic of the starting area is just there to make everything else feel more hostile by contrast.

Outer Wilds is bizarre in that its marketed as a comfy exploration game but for the most part it's either horror-adjacent or just straight up horror. I dont know how much they added since I played many years ago but the brambles still give me chills, especially what's at the center :ohdear:

Molotovs have become an important part of my arsenal and the game has dramatically gotten better. There was one boss that was like. An onion of armored plate and electricity and I'd just shoot it, then firebomb it and it didn't even hit my dudes.

The contrast of laid-back, folksy atmosphere and bizarre, hostile cosmic phenomena is a big part of what makes Outer Wilds so effective. And it's not just some bait-and-switch thing right at the beginning; it keeps that contrast up throughout the entire game up to the very end.

I don't hate Borderlands 2 but it's kind of dumb that when you get to the end of the base game on the second (more fun) difficulty you keep levelling up, so you pretty much have to move on the the highest difficulty (which is was an extra hard challenge that got patched in, I believe?) It should really be possible to mess with the post game stuff and the level scaling without having to go all the way.

On the other hand, I tried a little Destiny 2 and the 30fps cap and terrible fov is a huge pain to adjust to.

And starting with Halo 2, there's apparently no in-game subtitles, the subtitle menu option only controls cutscenes? :wtf:, that just seems astonishing for a modern collection in a high-profile franchise, not even considering that Halo 2 specifically got a remake for the collection :psyduck:

I somehow managed to completely miss getting a chainsaw in the new(ish) Doom game. I haven't hit a hard wall or anything about it (I've been using the pistol just enough that I knew something was wrong), but man, you'd think the game would have some sort of "this door won't open until you have a chainsaw, just in case" door.

The first Spyro the Dragon has really tight level design with a lot of stuff usually packed into a small level. I really like this style of design but I’ve played through it so often I can now 100% the game in about 3 or so hours.

The other games pad this time out with larger levels and mini games but I really just want more tight platforming like the first game.

One thing that grinds my gears about Street Fighter II - The World Warrior that isn't in any of the subsequent iterations is that Zangief's crouch is just high enough that it will get hit by (of if you're holding back block) a high Tiger Shot rather than being able to duck under it like every other character. What this means is that if you ever block a single high Tiger Shot, Sagat can keep throwing them at you almost faster than you can get out of blockstun, you have no way of ducking under or jumping over it, and he can just chip you to death with block damage (or you can just take them on the chin and die faster). I can routinely Double Perfect Bison with Zangief, but I can't even beat Sagat.

Quite far into God of War PS4 now, and this layered blade trap under Tyr's Temple (where you have to flip the temple to get to Jotunheim) sucks. I'll probably take a break from the main story to go back to other areas and grab what I've missed, or at least most of it. At least the only missable stuff is equipment, and some of it ban be bought later apparently. I think I only need one more cypher to Nifelheim though, so I can always find that and check that out, as I'm sure that that's where the ingredients for the level 7 armour will be located.
