I only know about vortex ring states because of the instruction manual for the KA-50 Black Shark flight simulator. Which as an aside was rad as hell flight sim. It was totally spooky to learn that a helicopter could accidentally start recycling it’s own downdraft and just like fall out of the sky.

That's a 412 which is underpowered to begin with, and they were probably at a high density altitude. With a lot of gas and at least 6 pax they were likely at or near max gross. Hooned in for that tac decel, pulled the collective to his armpit and that's that. Not much you can do to recover at 50 feet and 50* nose up, though the nose did drop just before they hit.
